If this refers to independence from the United States, I do not think that is a good idea. The U.S. is the greatest country in human history, and Hawaii has outsized influence over U.S. policy. We have two senators in Congress for our small population, giving each Hawaiian voter a larger impact. Currently we get billions of dollars from the federal government, and I’ve yet to see an independence plan that would be more beneficial to the Hawaiian people.

Additionally, what would we do with independence? Who would lead us? Would we restrict our leadership pool based on race? Would those race-based leaders subject themselves to the kinds of audits that exposed the waste and abuse at OHA this year? There are too many unknowns to make this a viable plan.


I have no info on the At-Large candidates and will abstain from voting for them, unless someone else has info and can post guidance here.

IMHO I think that native Hawaiians must be legally recognized as the indigenous people of Hawaii as as such, since Hawaii is part of the US, recognized as Native Americans with all the benefits therein. Being 25% Mohawk, I don’t like using the term “reservation” so maybe a nation within a nation would b more appropriate.......

I think OHA is a sham. It is just an extension of cronyism in Hawaii. Exclusive contracts and deals that arent serving their mission but serving board members. Sad. The last bit of news was some grand standing by Lei Ahu Isa of how she left an accident and threw down her "Im an OHA trustee" card. These people think they are above the people when they are servants of the people. Act like it.

OHA is nothing more than a money broker that takes US federal dollars and hands much of it to questionable organizations, whose initiatives do not necessarily serve for the betterment of Native Hawaiians.  The fact that Native Hawaiians are still on the bottom rung of every major socio-economic measure in Hawaii is empirical evidence of OHA's failure since its creation.

Native Hawaiians should not place their faith and well-being in OHA or any US assistance, but work towards restoring their illegally occupied nation and gain self-sufficiency by their own means.
