Firearms and Accessories / Rimfire Bullet Trap
« on: February 04, 2021, 04:39:00 PM »
Does anyone here have any experience with the rimfire bullet traps sold on Amazon?  I was thinking about buying a couple.  I wanted to use them for shooting both my PCP air rifles and my .22LR firearms.

They would not be shot in a public residential area.  It would be shot on private property owned by the company I work for.

Thanks I’m advance for sharing.  :shaka:

Scar 17 is my favorite for hunting

My friend uses his to hunt when he goes home to Molokai, that’s a straight up sexy savage beast.  I wish I bought one too.

My brush gun if I’m expecting to encounter different animals while on hunt, like when I go to Maui, is a 20ga shotgun.  I’ll carry bird shot and slugs.  But typically it’s either my bow or .308 if I know I’m going to have take something at range.  Only during bird season will I more often carry my 20ga because I’ll have the chance for bird, pig, or deer at that time.

I purchased a slightly used MDT LSS chassis for my Ruger Scout rifle from EBay.  I’m currently waiting for my Mil-Spec buffer tube and Bravo Company Mod 0 grip to come in.  I’ll be running a AB Arms Urban Sniper stock I picked from the For Sale section.  Once I get it put together I’ll post a pic.  I did a lot of research - if that’s what you call reading through hundreds of various forum posts on the matter and various reviews and write ups.  In the end it really did seem like a dead even draw between the 2 in terms of improved accuracy.  A McMillan stock or any high end stock properly fitted and bedded by a trained gunsmith seemed to slightly out perform the chassis systems by a hair, but I attributed that to proper bedding and tuning by a professional.  A lot of the chassis were put together at home or in man cave workshop because it’s typically a straight forward drop in.

In the end I went with the MDT chassis because of cost and adjustability to fit it specifically to my body and for hunting.  If my wife wants to shoot it I can adjust the length of pull to fit her too.  If something breaks or doesn’t suit my needs I can fix it or swap it out.  I really liked the option of being able to make my rifle “mission” specific.  Because the MDT chassis uses the M-Lok system I can quickly add a bipod and I can change my sling attachment points easily.  If ever get to go hunting on the mainland I can even attach an IR laser to be used with a NV scope.

I know my lowly scout rifle will never be a truly precision tack driving rifle but if I can irk out a little more accuracy and make it customizable to my needs and ergonomics then for me it’s a win.  I shot old wood stock rifles since small kid times but got frustrated when I started hunting because they never seemed to fit me exactly how I wanted.  It wasn’t until I shot my first AR that I really had something that fit me.  Whatever your choice I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer as long as it fits you and how you plan to shoot.

Hunting / Bird Hunting Without a Dog
« on: May 09, 2020, 04:34:21 PM »
Anyone here hunt without a dog?  In the past I’ve hunted on the Big Island with friends who had dogs, but I live on Oahu and my dog is only good for chasing lizards and cockroaches.

I finally got my rig put together.

Condor padded gun belt with PALs webbing
Rothco inner belt
Alien Gear Shapeshifter holster
Esstac KWYI mag pouches
Blue Force Gear dump pouch
Leatherman MUT
Amazon tear away IFAK pouch

I'm just waiting on my flashlight pouch and I'll probably add 1 more rifle mag pouch

Ok so I finally made a decision and made my purchase.  I ended up going with a Condor LCS Cobra Gun Belt.  I went with the Condor belt for 2 reasons.

The main reason I went with Condor belt was because of price.  The belt was $75 from Amazon and then I spent $10 on eBay for a Rothco inner belt.  The second reason I went with the Condor belt was because of its flexibility.  The Condor belt is a padded PALS/Molle belt which is one of the criteria I had set for myself.  The flexibility comes in the fact that the belt has a removable stiffener so that it can be used as a stand alone belt or with the stiffener removed it can be used as a double belt system, hence the purchase of the Rothco inner belt.

I know cheap doesn’t always mean good.  I really do get that, but this will allow me to experiment and see what I like and what I don’t like.  Then after I have more experience and understanding I can make an educated purchase if and when this one falls apart or I can keep it as a back up and upgrade to a Ronin, ATS Tactics, or Blue Alpha Gear.

Once I get my pouches and holster I’ll post a pic.

Thanks guys.  The 2 belts I’m considering right now are the ATS Tactical Skirmish Belt that Platinum uses and the Assault Belt System by AWS.  Supposedly AWS is the company that manufactures the Ronin Tactical belts.  I also considered the Blue Alpha Gear belt because it got so much positive reviews on YouTube and the internet.  I saw that Changemyoil uses a plate carrier and originally I had thought about just having a gun belt and chest rig, but changed my mind.  Since I work construction I’m used to carrying my tool pouches on my waist and figured a good belt setup would be more comfortable and easier for me to navigate.  Once I get my rig set up I’ll post pics.

Thanks Mac I found it.  Gave up and just typed in belt.  It’s “range belt” started in 2018 if anyone else is interested.  Not a lot of posts, but there are pictures.

Not to get all tactical and out there, but what battle belt/ carry belt do you guys run?  How do you have them set up?  I’ve finally decided to get a little more serious and start taking some classes, but like the HDF days they all require a holster and mag carriers.  Anyone run a chest rig?

Thank you all for your input.  After doing a lot of internet and YouTube research I’m taking Jmoto808’s advice and looking to pick up a Tikka T1x.  It fits what I’m looking for and Is within my budget.  Maybe one day when I have more money and better marksmanship skill I’ll buy a Bergara or maybe even a Vudoo.

Thanks for the recommendation JMoto.  :shaka:  I looked at the Bergara and the Vudoo rifles for that exact reason.  It’s nice that they are based on the tried and true Remington 700 platform and have a lot of aftermarket options.  I just can’t bring myself to spend that kind of coin on a rifle that I won’t be able to make good use of though.  I’ll spend $1500 on a new surfboard because I can surf it whenever I want and wherever I want, but not on a dedicated long range rifle.  The only time I’ll be able to stretch it out that far is when I can make it to Schofield or when I get invited to go to a friend of friends farm.  The Tikka 1x MTR looks like a sweet option.  I also started looking into the Volquartsen Summit receiver only and doing a build from there.  That way I can use all my 10/22 parts, but I don’t know if I would get the kind of accuracy I’m looking for.

Firearms and Accessories / 22ELR Rifle
« on: February 02, 2020, 05:11:30 PM »
I’ve been looking for a long time at all the different bolt action 22LR rifles trying to figure out which one to buy.  I own a couple 10/22’s and a M&P 15-22 which are all accurate enough for me, but recently I’ve been reading a lot about 22 rimfire and their use in ELR (extreme long range) shooting.  That got me thinking even more about which rifle I should get.  In ELR competitions guys are pushing the 22lr out to 300+ yards.

Ideally I’d like to keep the purchase price under $700.  I would also like something that has some aftermarket customization, at least the ability to change the stock.  I would also prefer if it comes with a threaded barrel.

I was thinking about the Ruger RPR rimfire rifle, but started having second thoughts. A lot of people on mainland forums recommend CZ rifles.  There were a couple Savage and Tikka rifles that I like the look of but have no idea if they are up to the task of being a long range precision rifle.

Does anyone here have any rifle recommendations or experience with pushing 22lr rounds out to extreme distances for accuracy?

General Discussion / Police Shooting in Kailua
« on: January 07, 2020, 03:43:10 PM »
I was listening to the live police press release on yesterday’s police involved shooting in Kailua.  In the conference the deputy police chief eluded to the fact that the gun the guy had may have been an airsoft gun.  But the thing that got me was that he went on to say that they, HPD, have encountered “many” airsoft guns that have been converted and are capable of firing real ammunition.  He made it seem like it is easy and relatively common.

I find that laughable and hard to believe.  From what I have seen it’s not that easy to convert.  At least the ones that I had a chance to fuss around with.  More lies and BS being sold as truth by our supposed protectors.

Thanks for your guys advice.  I’ll be on the look out for an Uberti.  I also decided I’m going to look for a Ruger Old Army.  The ROA seems like a good shooter since I’m not looking for an authentic type replica.

General Discussion / Black Powder Revolvers on Oahu
« on: April 07, 2019, 10:30:34 PM »
Do any of the LGS on Oahu regularly stock or carry black powder revolvers?  I’m thinking about buying one, but all my research seems to point to going down and physically handling them.  This is due to the differences between Uberti and Pietta.  Also fit finish even from one gun to the next by the same manufacturer seems to vary.  I went to a SASH shoot a few years ago and got to shoot one there, but at the time I wasn’t really thinking about getting one.

The US is such a disturbing place.  So now can I sue a beer manufacturer for making beer that got someone drunk in a DUI accident?  WTF is wrong with the world?  Why can’t people see that it is the actions of others and not the inanimate object.

Anyone handle or own a PWS T3 Summit or the newer Volquartsen Summit version?

Wouldn't happen to be Winchester 52s? For sale?  :geekdanc: :geekdanc: :geekdanc:

Nah.  One is a Sears model made by JC Higgins and the other one is an unfired JC Penny’s rifle made by Marlin.  Now they’re kind of like safe queens.  Since my dad passed last year I haven’t been to the range at all.
