Title: Anyone here load 9mm with .357 bullets?
Post by: dogman on May 07, 2018, 10:13:59 PM
I know it's done. The reason I am asking is I really like the MGHP .357, 125 grain bullets out of my .357 so I was thinking of ordering the 9mm 124 gr. MGHP bullets for my VP9 and Colt 9mm 1911.  I tried loading a couple .357s in 9mm cases, the cannelure sits above the case. It would be nice if could use the same bullet for two calibers.

Funny you mention this. I actually load both of these bullets. I don't recommend shooting a .357 through a .355 pipe as the pressures are increased. Though I really don't know how much. But I can recommend the 124gr 9mm MGHP bullet. It shoots well in most of my guns.

If you want to try some I am more than happy to donate some for you to try. LMK

FWIW

I ordered and shot 357 dia. 9mm RN bullets through my block17.
The hope was that the larger dia. would help accuracy.
So far the results are unremarkable, but I'm not finished testing yet.
These were 147 gr.

Interesting.

What is the price difference between the .357 and 9 mm MGHP.  I assume they are pretty close, or same.

Do you have a 9 mm revolver BTW?

There's about a $5 difference between the two when you buy a case of 3,750.

Inspector is the 9mm revolver guy, I enjoy shooting 38/357 too much.

Great! Just let me know.

See the thread about what's up with the mailman. Those cases weigh around 60 pounds!

My favorite revolver cartridge of all time is 38/357. But the 45 Colt is a close second. I am old enough to remember when the 9mm semi auto pistols (Known as "Wonder Nines") took the U.S. by storm and replaced the 357 Magnum as the carry weapon for police agencies. I like revolvers that shoot non traditional cartridges hence my fascination with the 9mm revolver and 45 ACP revolver. I have always felt the 9mm in a short barrel revolver would be more effective for self defense than the 38 Special. Mostly this is due to the nature of the 9mm using faster burning powder and maintaining a higher velocity than the 38 Special which is pretty anemic in short barreled revolvers.

One revolver I have wanted for a long time is a Blackhawk in 38/357 with the additional 9mm cylinder. The knock on this revolver has always been accuracy with the 9mm cartridge is not optimal due to the barrel being designed for the 357 diameter bullet and the 9mm being 355 doesn't fit quite tight enough. My thought to improve the accuracy has always been to load a 357 bullet in the 9mm case.

So a 9mm cylinder to a .357 barrel, single action revolver so no moon clips? If you load .357 bullets into 9mm cases and shoot through a .357 barrel, would it be the same as shooting 38 special?

Correct, no moon clips. I don't have time to look up the ballistics so I am doing this by memory. The 38 SPL is slower than the 9mm. But the 38 SPL +P is similar to 9mm ballistics with similar weight bullets. However, 9mm +P would have an advantage. Especially in shorter barrels.

Not 38 spl. Better watch out for over pressure 9mm bullets are 355-356 dia.  375/38 are 357/358 dia. .002 does not sound like much but t might be enough pressure to blow your gun up. These are DIFFERENT for a reason. book does not say ether or.....
