Off Topic / PR firm lays out communications plan for HPD
« on: March 28, 2017, 10:39:31 AM »
A just-ended, one-year contract with a downtown public relations firm netted the Honolulu Police Department about a dozen training classes for top HPD officials, a departmentwide communications plan and a customized, seven-page “crafting your message” strategy guide.

$106,121 spent on how to be nice to the public and how to coverup bad incidents.  Why not just be nice to people on the streets and do the right thing for free?  They paid money to learn how to do this?

This thread will be for firearms training lessons and videos on the internet that you can learn fundamentals and techniques from.  Dry practice at home ensuring an unloaded firearm.  Most of your learning and training is done off the range and  live fire on a range confirms what you have learned and trained for.

Post video channels that you have used and recommend to others.

I'll update and organize it as I find stuff.

Here's another video of a shooting in NJ following a 10 mile chase.  Skip to 11:00 on the video.  Things I got out of this is:
1.  Make use of cover.
2.  Guarantee your shots (no misses)
3.  Don't let adrenaline take control of you.

General Discussion / GET OFF THE BENCH! - AR15.com Rifle Challenge
« on: March 02, 2017, 02:13:06 PM »
I have a fun match from ar15.com for Hawaii to participate in.  Shoot rifles at 100 yards unsupported (sitting, kneeling, standing, etc) with 15 shots in 3 minutes on the attached target.  Post the results here per the format below.  Posting on ar15.com is encouraged but not required.  YOU MUST FOLLOW ALL OF THE RULES AND POSTING REQUIREMENTS!  Each division winner will receive a rifle bottle opener.  One randomly selected participant will receive a 20mm vulcan cannon bottle opener and 3 pack of Mountain House freeze dried food.  Must live in Hawaii to get a prize. https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=26815.msg236943#msg236943   Contest ends on May 31, 2017 for 2ahawaii.

Notes:
Per EVR, no sling support allowed but jacket and gloves are okay.
No sitting on chairs or benches to shoot unless required by the range or due to disability. (I don't think any range in Hawaii requires it).
This is based on precision, not accuracy.  So we are only measuring group size
The target backer must be free of other holes (other than the 15 shots  :D )
No limit on number of attempts.

Current thread:

2} Standard “ARFCOM” target should be used so we are all equals in that regard. I know it sucks as a target, but the reason we all need to use it is that it will form a standardized target so all are handicapped by the same restrictions. Look at the one posted here. 6-inch diameter. They are easy to make or click below;

Rule Modification: Target; You should use the Arfcom Target but may use a more-or-less 6-inch round bull if you cannot get the Arfcom Target to print. Use 8 1/2x11 sheet of paper and a clean backer for scoring. Note scoring rules.

"Alternate Approved Target":
http://ar15hunter.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/AFRCOM-AR-NON-MOA-CHALLENGE-BULL-TARGET-1.pdf

3} It is recognized that not all ranges allow unsupported shooting. There is really no way around this so fellows will just have to find a legal, safe spot to get their 15 Shots in. Look, make sure it is 100 yards. It does seem to matter. NO SHOOTING AT LESS THAN 100 YARDS! Use a range finder or otherwise do your level best to keep the 100 an actual 100. This is the Honor System remember, so make sure there is some Honor in it!

4} SHOOTING RULES; 100 YARDS, 15 SHOTS WITHIN 3 MINUTES.

Standing/Sitting/Kneeling/Squatting all OK. NO USE OF ANY SUPPORT!

ALL SHOOTING MUST BE UN-supported AND NO prone.

NO bags. NO sling. NO sticks. NO bipods. NO benches. NO supports of any kind. UPDATE; If the range won't let you sit on the ground or stand, go ahead and shoot sitting in the chair, just no resting the rifle or your arms on anything except your own body. Now...since some might throw shots off a 8.5x11 sheet, the 8.5x11 ARFCOM Target may be taped/stapled on top of a target backer. BUT the target backer MUST be clear of other shots {except the 15 fired for score}. Cardboard, construction paper, reversed tan-backed targets, white paper, etc may be used as target backers EXCEPT, again, the backer must be clean of all shots before shooting the 15 for score. TARGETS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED IF HOLES OTHER THAN THE FIFTEEN ARE VISIBLE. USE A CLEAN TARGET, ETC AS A BACKER.

Regarding Shooting Positions;

Kneeling can be done with one elbow on knee, squatting elbows on knees are OK. The old cross-legged position, elbows on knees, OK, too. No non-body part under the elbows, AKA NO PRONE, tho, and no resting on bench, or wall, etc.

5} 15-shot group score to be measured as follows. It must be fired within 3 minutes total. Extreme spread to be calculated measuring outside edge of the farthest shots, outside edge of greasehole to outside edge of greasehole. Then subtract diameter of the bullet. Total in inches calculated. You may use a slide rule, ruler, dial caliper or…..yardstick or 20-foot tape measure capable of decimal or fractions to the 16th of an inch but DO NOT POST FRACTIONS!! Convert all ruler measurements to decimal or they will not be posted. Then convert to MOA. MOA = {100 yard Group size divided by 1.047}.

6} PICTURES: You must post:
1 picture of the fired target uncluttered by anything else,
1 picture of the target with ruler, etc measuring the extreme spread of the group itself,
1 picture of the rifle.
3 pictures in all MUST be posted.
You MAY also include a pic of the shooting position taken either while shooting or posed so we can see what position is being used. That would be helpful and guys will want to see this. Do it if you can.

7} Results must be entered in the following format for posting {so I can copy/paste}. If not in that format your results will not be posted.

USER NAME – Make Model Caliber Rifle – Barrel Length INCLUDING Muzzle Devices - Sights Make and Type -List of Important Mods – Ammunition {factory load/handloads} - Shooting Position Used – Group Size Decimal Inches = MOA {100 yard Group size divided by 1.047}

8} Now, here are the Rifle Divisions;

BARREL LENGTHS INCLUDE BRAKES,SUPPRESSORS, FLASH HIDERS as they all add forward weight.

A} Iron-sighted Carbine Division {bbls under 18" INCLUDING BRAKES, SUPPRESSORS, FLASH HIDERS}
B} Iron-Sighted Rifle Division {bbls 18” and over}
C} Optical-Sighted Carbine Division {bbls under 18 inches}
D} Optical-Sighted Rifle Division {bbls 18 inches and over}

EDIT; BARREL LENGTH; MEASURE YOUR BARREL USING THE FOLLOWING METHOD; POST THAT WITH THE DATA ABOVE; Use the “BATFE Method”; Unload rifle, insert cleaning rod from muzzle to breech face, mark at the muzzle, w/draw and measure from end to mark. For our purposes, "Barrel Length" INCLUDES, REPEAT, INCLUDES MUZZLE DEVICES!

Remember, BARREL LENGTHS INCLUDE BRAKES,SUPPRESSORS, FLASH HIDERS as they all add forward weight.

GET OUT THERE AND HAVE SOME FUN AND SHOOT!!

General Discussion / Prelude to SSS #2
« on: February 23, 2017, 11:32:49 AM »
I'll be returning to Sig Sauer Academy in May to work on my Sig Master Instructor in Pistol and Rifle (I think shotguns should be relegated to just shooting birds).  This will be my training log for the next 2 months and Q/A discussions for anyone needing help with their training.  As you can tell, I'm big on spending more time and money on training versus equipment.

Background:  I was a military competitive shooter now retired and took firearms training at the police academy, Front Sight, various NRA instructor and training counselor classes, and other clinics.    I completed the Sig Instructor classes last year (https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=22710.0) which I enjoyed very much learning different techniques in operating/shooting firearms and instructing students.  I've found the class improved my speed, accuracy, weapons handling, and confidence a lot.

Current:  I haven't been shooting much in the past year as I've been doing more teaching, coaching, and organizing than shooting.  I've learned a lot in those areas but my shooting skills have degraded...a little slower, less accurate, and I forgot how to do some of the techniques.  I have trouble keeping my pistol groups on a sheet of paper at Koko Head and my one handed shooting is terrible.  My rifle is still pretty good, just a little slower on everything.  As far as teaching, I've just done NRA classes which have a whole different technique than Sig Sauer philosophy...strict by the book versus encouraging flexibility.

Training plan:
Practice live fire at least twice a week.
Dryfire practice at least twice a week.
Watch youtube videos to refresh my techniques.
Teach tactical pistol clinics and coaching.
Attend 3 USPSA events.
Compete in a CMP pistol match.
Attend a pistol/rifle class and mainland match if possible.

Usually when I hear about HPD shooting at drivers trying to flee I think it's excessive.  This case sounds like a good justification and one less criminal out there.  Hope they have a quick recovery.

When officers arrived, they realized the vehicle was stolen.
Two officers approached the two suspects who were sleeping inside the SUV.
They woke up and the driver attempted to flee, reversing the SUV into another vehicle before speeding toward the two officers. The driver then slammed the SUV Into the apartment building.
The two officers, a male and female, were pinned between the SUV and the building and fired their weapons.
The male driver was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead on scene.
The female passenger was taken into custody for investigation.
The two officers suffered serious injuries and were taken to an area hospital for treatment. The officers' injuries are not classified as life threatening. The two are expected to be released today.

Political Discussion / Milo Yiannopoulos
« on: February 05, 2017, 12:48:23 PM »
I had no clue who Milo Yiannopoulos was and the reasoning for the university protest and riots.  My background is half of my friends are far left, half are far right, and my family and relatives are right in the middle which makes for a very informative and balanced life for me.  One of my friends brought up Milo, an editor for Briebart, who is on the alt-right and despised by liberals who call him a Nazi, homophobe, white supremacists, anti-femenist, antiimmigrant...basically a modern day Hitler.  It's interesting that he is an immigrated Catholic Jew that is openly gay and loves black men which dispels a lot of what people hate about him.

Anyways I watched youtube shows and read his editorials expecting to see an angry disgruntled man calling for genocide, supporting the KKK, and wanting an uprising.  I didn't see any of that.  I saw a well spoken knowledgeable man that had many opinions, some I agree with and some I don't, that cut through political correctness and described things how he saw them.  He seemed well educated and able to counter many points made against him.  I don't know what the protestors and rioters are complaining about, he's expressing his opinions that some people disagree with, but it's not shocking to me where people have to prevent him from speaking.

I like to see things from different points of view, even if I don't agree with them.

General Discussion / Looking for an Appleseed Instructor
« on: January 31, 2017, 04:49:52 PM »
Does anyone know an appleseed  rifle instructor on the island?  I was looking into becoming an instructor to run events here, but they have some steep requirements...shoot in 2 appleseed events, attend an instructor course, help teach at 5 to 8 events under an instructor.  I would require me to attend 8-11 events on the mainland which would be very expensive and time consuming.

General Discussion / Gun Trek - NRA Counselor Course & Shot Show
« on: January 11, 2017, 02:28:28 PM »
I'll be off to the mainland soon to attend the NRA Training Counselor course in Fairfax, VA and also Shot Show in Las Vegas, NV.  The NRA Training Counselor is a 3 day class to teach Training Counselor candidates how to teach NRA instructors to teach NRA courses and can only be taken at NRA HQ.  To attend the class you must have been an NRA instructor for at least 2 years, taught 5 classes and 25 students, have other certifications and experience, and made contributions to the firearm community.  I took my Pistol instructor class a few years back from thou who shall not be named and did a lot of volunteer work teaching classes, receiving my Sig Sauer instructor certifications, volunteered as a coach, attending competitions, and helping the firearms community.

You also need 3 references and a qualification target...16 out of 20 hits at 15 yards with a pistol.  I'm a cheap guy so I just did it at Koko Head 25 yards today, not a good shooting day for me but I still made it.

Primary goals for this trip:
1.  Pass the Training Counselor Course PASSED 1-15-2017

Secondary Goals:
1.  Meet with the NRA Youth Hunter Education Coordinator about starting a program in Hawaii. DONE 1-13-2017
2.  Talk to the NRA Institute for Legislative Action or Civil Defense Fund about gun rights in Hawaii.  DONE 1-19-2017

Tertiary Goals
1.  Play in the snow.  Bolo, no snow in DC or Vegas
2.  Pay my respects to the US Constitution. DONE 1-16-2017
3.  Get a special tour of Battlefield Vegas range. Bolo, no call back.
4.  Meetup with the gang from AR15.com at Shot Show.  Bolo, got sick.
