How many new gun owners since 2019?
« on: January 16, 2022, 10:32:08 AM »
Has this been discussed elsewhere? I am curious how many new gun owners have been minted since the events of late 2019? Major milestones include, in rough chronological order:

China virus alert (Dec 2019)
Global pandemic alert
Lockdowns and quarantines
Economic troubles
WW3 rumors
Mandatory shutdowns
Mandatory injections (i.e., false choice situation)
Mass walkouts and layoffs
Logistics issues
Food and other supplies shortages

You forgot the BLM mostly peaceful riots that left ~30 people dead, millions of dollars in property damage, and the take over of public areas such as the CHAZ/CHOP.

I know at least a couple of first time buyers that bought because they saw these events and believed they were on their own should they ever find a mob at their door step or business.

"The data shows that between January 2020 and April 30 of this year, 5.1 million Americans bought their first guns, following 2.4 million who did so in 2019."

Their number comes from.

Paranoia is building not just due to Covid-19, BLM, Oath Keepers, Smash and Grab, and rioting. A wave of vigilante murders of people like Ahmaud Arbery and Clockwork-Orange style attacks attacks against Asians has also spurred gun buying by people who never owned a gun in their life.

A report produced by the Firearm Industry Trade Association noted a nearly 60% increase in firearm sales among Black women and men in 2020. And when you consider all buyers, the organization said more than 8.4 million people purchased a firearm for the first time last year.

Fear is a very strong emotion. Guns are not a panacea, but helplessness is a very strong motivator. Do not expect that the only side buying weapons is your "side". After WW2, a Jewish movement was symbolized by the phrase, "Never Again." I am seeing the same sentiment in the Black middle class.

Nothing says “Never Again” more than an armed Jew.

I am not a new gun owner, but since 2019 I acquired only one gun, a 12 gauge pump hardly used, that was given to me by a good friend.

5.4 million in 2021 according to the NSSF.

5 million in 2020 according to the NSSF.

2.4 million in 2019 according to US News < not sure I trust this one.  Seems a bit low since NSSF estimated about 1.5 million new gun owners between 2019 and 2020 in total.

33% of new gun owners in 2021, according to the NSSF were female.  Almost 50% of new gun owners inquired about training when they purchased their firearms.
