HB1872 Food security/hunting protections help needed
« on: April 21, 2022, 11:23:51 AM »
Need your assistance to pass HB1872 Gaming & Fishing Resources, food security.  We need people to call in to the House committee members to support the Senate Draft #2 version of the bill, instead of the  House version.  The House version has the additional wording (in RED) which limits the hunting protections intended for the bill:

(3)(A)  Game mammals and game birds can provide a sustainable food source that merits high-quality habitats with sufficient food, water, and refuge to support viable populations sufficient for hunting; provided that adverse effects to the environment are sufficiently minimized or offset through native ecosystem protections;

This wording (in RED) may seem reasonable to most people, however it provides the Government a way to bypass the protections in this bill.  Similar to how the two words “may issue” versus “shall issue” prevent the issuance of concealed carry permits in Hawaii.  Environmentalists are pushing for the removal of all non-native game mammals from Hawaii.  This bill is intended to stop the eradication of game animals like the removal of goats from Waianae and removal of sheep from Mauna Kea that hunters depend upon for food and traditions.  It would also protect hunting lands and require the DLNR to better manage game mammal populations.

Please call these House Representatives and tell them to SUPPORT HB1872 SENATE DRAFT #2 version of the bill.

Bill was scheduled for conference committee tomorrow.  I joined the hunters who flew in from Hilo to visit everyone at the Capitol.  Looks like we were successful in changing minds and the bill should be adopted as the SD2 version we wanted that protects hunting.  We also put an end to SB3320 which served no purpose and actually would've made pest control worse with red tape.

It's a good thing we visited the capitol cause I dropped the ball and forgot about SB3298 Big Island Range.  The bill would've died if we didn't go to the capitol and ask for a committee hearing for it.  It is scheduled for tomorrow.
