General Discussion / Suggest a dataset for data.hawaii.gov
« on: April 15, 2019, 06:04:37 PM »
I find it ironic that data.hawaii.gov has a category for "individual rights" but it is empty  ;)

Suggest the state have live data on something like "number of active firearm carry permits" here

General Discussion / Police dont necessarily know the laws
« on: March 20, 2019, 04:05:06 PM »
Just a reminder that police are not the best source for getting information on the firearm laws.  I had a patient today who had something in his history that would have caused him to unknowingly lie on the 4473 background check form.  He had called the firearm division to ask about it they told him to "just get a note from your doctor and it will be fine"

Physicians cant overrule federal laws and even if a police officer says it is fine to technically lie on a 4473 form just because "you have a note from your doctor" it is still illegal.

This is the second time in a row that a patient came to see me as recommended by the firearms division and it was wrong advice.

If I gave bad advice to someone I can get sued for it.  If the police do it and you get arrested, nothing happens to them.

Legal and Activism / submitting a bill for next year
« on: February 27, 2019, 08:34:42 AM »
I spoke with my representative's office about meeting with my rep to get a bill submitted for next year.   Best time to meet with the reps for getting a bill submitted for next year is June.

You dont need to know how to write the bill, our taxes pay for staff who do that.  All you need to do is set up an appointment with your rep wtih your idea of a bill to submit.  It will help if you have the details on what you want the bill to accomplish, examples of laws from other states will help as well.

You dont need to have your own rep submit the bill, so if your rep is massively anti-gun, dont bother and make an appointment with a rep who is at least willing to listen.

Reps can only submit a certain amount of bills so meeting in early June is the best way to make sure it meets the list.

I will me meeting with my rep In June to get some bills submitted.  I encourage everyone to set up a little bit of time to meet with your rep in June.  The more pro-gun bills we can get submitted the more counter offensive we can drive to the onslaught of anti-gun bills.

Dont wait for the NRA or some other group to step up and do this.  At very least you get a sit down appointment with your rep to explain why things like the government steeling legal property is bad.

If you have questions about the process, call your reps office, say you have "an idea about a bill for next session" and ask how the process works.  It sounds quick and simple and you dont need to know how to write a bill.

You know when the bill says "submitted on someone's behalf?"   this is that process

General Discussion / Bulk ammo to the Big Island
« on: January 25, 2019, 07:37:33 AM »
I have a friend who runs a home FFL back in oregon.  He had a deal on 14,500 rounds of 223 for free shipping.

So I asked him for a freight quote to the Big Island.  It came out to about $0.40 a round total cost (500 lbs of ammo for ~$1000 shipping).  It was a little much for me for a total cost but he is going to look into a freight charge if we wanted to put together a group buy occasionally.

Would anyone want to go in together on a group buy for ammo to the big island?

What do you think is a reasonable price per round for the common stuff (9mm, .223, etc)

On a side note, his online store is
https://www.luckysportinggoods.com/

I've bought some sporting good stuff from here and he was very helpful to get the best shipping price

General Discussion / Too good to be true?
« on: December 13, 2018, 08:14:17 PM »
As a joke I looked up shipping charges on the barrel (literally) of 5.56 that Brownels has for sale (12,500 rounds).

I expected something around $10,000 in shipping,  but it still lists free shipping and a $19.95 "special handling fee" for shipping hazmat items to my zip code.

Yeah, I'm sure they got that just a bit wrong.

Off Topic / Yager Air Rifles made on the Big Island
« on: December 11, 2018, 05:47:25 PM »
I found these in a little hunting shop on the Big Island.

Yager (I believe that's the name) 9mm caliber air rifles.  tank rated to 5000 psi.  They do not need a firearm permit to purchase.

These are made by one guy on the Big Island, only on sale at this one shop.

General Discussion / Air rifles?
« on: February 15, 2018, 01:40:14 PM »
Any (over-reaching unconstitutional) restrictions on air rifles in Hawaii?  Specifically the higher caliber ones that you fill with scuba tanks because of the higher pressures?
How about air rifles that are integrally suppressed?

(being vague here on specific air rifles since I dont want to give a legislator and idea of something else to ban)
