There's an alternate theory to having expensive EDC items:
The more it costs, the more likely you'll keep up with it.
i used to use the "free" gov't-supplied pens. Even though I grabbed a dozen whenever I needed another, I never seemed to have a pen on me. I would loan it and/or leave it wherever.
When I became a civilian contractor, I made the decision to buy a nice, expensive Cross pen and pencil set.
I used that set for 7 years until the pen accidentally took a bath in the clothes washer. Even though the pen still wrote, the mechanism to extend and retract it was screwed. So, I bought a replacement -- same set, different color exterior. I still have them 18 years later.
If someone borrowed it, you bet your a$$ I didn't let them walk away with it!
Just a thought.
I used to buy Craftsman screw driver sets from this place called Sears. For whatever reason, I would end up losing the sizes I use the most and buy another set for about ten or twenty bucks. About fifteen years ago I bought a set from the Snap-on truck for around $280. Those screw drivers have had a lot of use on them and I still have the complete set . . . knocking on wood.
