Preparedness and Survival / Re: Flashlights?
« on: September 21, 2016, 08:52:03 PM »
Don't worry about the cost of the 18650 cells, they will last you a long time. And buy good brand name ones that have built in protection, not some cheap no name cell, unless you want to risk a fire in your flashlight.

I am not a fenix fan but there are a lot of good quality chinese lights in the $50 range. Nitecore, Jetsam, Olight are all good names.

Depends on features you want. Some batteries are rechargeable in the body with the use of a USB plug. You looking for a pocket light to carry all the time or what? Give few more parameters. For example if you want a long term storage then go with a mechanical switch not an electrical switch to avoid vampiric drain on the battery.

I often purchase from battery junction.com or brightguy.com. I prefer to purchase american but there aren't as many options. Brightguy lets you search made in america lights. Candlepowerforums.com is a good place to talk and read flashlights. My most recent one was a nitecore MH20 and I am satisfied with that.

I second all of this. I'd add Illumn as another very good place for lights and batteries. Avoid Amazon for batteries. Almost everything there are cheap crap batteries that are literally dangerous to use. Good quality cells with built in protection circuits are worth the money (unless the light has built in protection circuit, then you can use unprotected cells). The forums mentioned have tons of info and battery recommendations. I'd throw in r/flashlight too.

For sure give some more info on what exactly your use and needs for the light are. There are a LOT of good lights out there now. Also aside from the common things you might look at for comparison like size, battery type, lumens and run time...consider also tint (neutral white tints are far more popular now) and CRI rating. High CRI lights, particularly ones with newer Nichia emitters are the new hotness apparently. I haven't tried one yet but my next light will probably be high CRI to see what all the fuss is about.

Another option is to jointly register your guns with your spouse, so both of your names are on the registration.  For handguns, your spouse would need proof of completing a handgun safety course or equivalent.

With as much a pain it is to make trips to PD not sure this would be easier. Question I have now is that if I register all my firearms to the trust including handguns...does handgun safety course for my wife still kick in? She would be a trustee, but I would register the items on behalf of the trust.
Edit: I would be buying all firearms, but registering them to the trust.

The only NFA legal in Hawaii are AOW and DD. I have a trust that holds an AOW.

Yes, I do know this. :)  I'm not particularly interested in AOW or DD here. Interest in NFA items was more long term, IE; if i'm going to the trouble of creating a trust I might as well try to accommodate NFA items (though  a non issue unless we move out of state). That is, unless suppressors magically become legal here, then I'd be very interested. Not holding my breath on that though. What has been your experience as far as purchasing and registering with a trust Suka?

I'm wondering if anyone has a trust for holding firearms in general, and what has the process been like for purchasing and registering? Ideally I would like family to be trustees so that upon my death there is literally nothing they have to do with regard to my firearms. No transfers, no registering. Again, my primary goal is estate planning rather than NFA items.

In my efforts at better preparedness and planning I have been trying to think ahead on how to most easily take care of family should something happen to me (its why I finally got life insurance in order when my son was born). Because I am just getting into guns and planning on acquiring my first very soon I am trying to plan ahead to allow the easiest and most pain free way to transfer ownership of firearms to my wife and son if I die. It seems that for my family's sake, by starting a trust now right from the start and registering all firearms to it, it might make things that much easier in the future if something happens to me. I know that firearms can be inherited here without necessarily requiring permits to acquire, but every extra step that can removed from the burden my family would already have to bear if I die would be beneficial in my thinking.

Has anyone here created a trust for registering firearms primarily for estate planning? If not what has been your experience with inherited firearms upon death of a family member?

Obviously as a bonus it would be nice if the trust could account for potential NFA items in the future (if we moved to another state  ;) ).

...
Now you got me curious about this beer
It is not cheap. Pint bottles but still over $6 a bottle here. Unless you really hate a dark and glorious wheat doppelbock, it will not disappoint. :)

Update, I confirmed that The Liquor Collection at Ala Moana in Honolulu has the above beer. If anyone knows any places closer to north shore that would be awesome.

I'm looking specifically for one of my old favorite beers, called Aventinus (from Schneider Weiss). Anyone know where this might be sold on Oahu?

It takes about 2-3 weeks for you to receive your card.

Ok great! Now...as long as our place in Wahiawa doesn't burn down in the meantime, maybe I'll get it this week.  >:(

I took and completed my hunter ed class the weekend of July 18th. Anyone know how long it takes to get the certificate or whatever it is that you need for applying for handgun permit?

I made it down to the fair as well and it did not disappoint! I didn't spend all day, but I couldn't afford that anyway! Got to shoot a Tavor, Scar 17, and the HK VP9 (I'm starting to really like the VP9). Shout out to the dude from Xring I chatted with a bit (I think he said his name was Dexter? Sorry not sure I got that right).

General Discussion / Just moved to Oahu, HRA shooting sports fair
« on: June 09, 2015, 04:09:21 PM »
Hello all,
Just moved my family to Hawaii (Oahu) ) and getting settled in my new place. I have half the parts I need to build an AR, which I am looking forward to getting built. In addition looking to get ready to buy some other new stuff. I noticed the HRA shooting sports fair and was not totally clear...is this open the public? I wanted to go down with a friend of mine and shoot some stuff. :) Looking to buy a pistol soon and really need some more shooting time with a few models to narrow down what I'd like. Looked like the Shooting sports fair is perfect place to try out some things!

Hunting / Typical distances for deer and hog?
« on: November 07, 2014, 12:31:41 PM »
Hi Guys, I am moving to Hawaii with my family next year I plan to take up hunting for the first time (I am a new shooter as well and just starting to collect parts for my first AR, which is also going to be my first gun). I'd like to be able to provide some food for the family. My question is what kind distance/ranges are you guys typically seeing for deer/hog? I would think that you don't see too much long range shots but maybe that just depends on the island. Reason I ask is I am collecting some gear and I'm on the lookout for some optics if I come across any sales in the near future. Figure I will most likely start with hunting on Molokai because I have family there. But I'd possibly try Lanai or big island too. I would be living on either Oahu or Maui depending on jobs. Should I just lean toward the typical 3-9x range? Do any of you go for a quality 1-4x? As a photography buff who has used good lenses I can well understand why having a sharp bright image with good field of view is often better than lots of magnification....so I don't want to waste money on some cheap over magnified optic for my purposes.

Thanks. The courses are free anyhow so I might as well. :)

So I am planning a move to Hawaii next year from New York where I am now. I am beginner with firearms and don't actually own any yet. I will probably wait until I get there before I make my first purchase because I really need to reduce the amount of things I need to move there. However....if I can get a head start on some of the requirements to get a handgun license over there I'd like to do that. Since a safety course is mandatory...and my understanding is that an IHEA Hunter Education Course can satisfy that requirement, I am wondering if I can do a hunter education course HERE before I move and have it satisfy the requirement.

General Discussion / Re: New Member? Introduce yourself here!
« on: August 25, 2014, 08:19:24 AM »
Hello there. New guy...and a New Yorker! (Long Island, not NYC) Planning a move with my family to Hawaii next year (Maui or Oahu, don't know yet). Figured I'd join here and learn some about the local scene before I move. And also familiarize myself with the laws. Imagine my amazement when I discover that Hawaii is one of the few places with stricter guns laws than NY (with the exception of the SAFE act).  :o

Anyway...my wife was born and raised on Molokai, but has has lived in NY these past 13 years, so we are moving to HI to be closer to her family.

As far as as guns/shooting....I am actually a newbie and don't even own any firearms. I've been to the range here on Long Island with a friend, and with a cousin-in-law last year at the Ukumehame range on Maui. Suffice to say I have the bug and I'm already planning a future AR-15 build!
