Trial costs involved in a self-defense shooting
« on: August 12, 2016, 11:27:10 AM »
This is a good detailed video on what steps occur if you go to a criminal trial for a self-defense shooting and the costs involved, which can be several hundred thousand dollars, not including a civil trial.  This is a worse case scenario (like the Deedy trials).  This is why you should continue training and practice, take self-defense and law courses, and look into insurance and pre-paid legal services.  Law enforcement officers have the department to back them up, legally and financially.  You are on your own.

That is why I have said I will not shoot to save the life of a stranger.  Even if you are later absolved of all charges, it will still cost you thousands, if not tens of thousands to defend youself in the legal system.  Not to mention lost time from work which may lead to a loss of your job.  The problems are not worth trying to be a hero, although some here feel differently.  To each his own.  I am not going to berate what anyone decides to do in a lethal encounter.

In the latest FS REALITY CHECK #30, I would shoot even though the gun wasn't pointed at me.  That is because the bad guy could easily have that shotgun pointed at me in a quarter second and the chance of running out undetected was very slim.

Have you heard of SecondCallDefense?

http://www.secondcalldefense.org

Not sure how good it is but SecondCallDefense is something that you would get in addition to insurance.  It appears to front up the payment for cost of legal defense, before your NRA firearm insurance kicks in (which is usually only after you've been tried).
I think, therefore I am armed.

I don't know if it was this company or another, but I inquired about this type of insurance a while back.  They would touch Hawaii with a 10 foot pole.  Might want to inquire of all the details before signing up for one of these plans.

I went with armed citizens network.com. It is a legal defense fund and their training videos for members are really good. Massad Ayoob is in most of them.  Also, this membership does not pummel you with emails, magazines, and other mailings.  You choose your own lawyer, and the fund pays. Not like "insurance" where THEY choose your lawyer.

In any case you benefit from the 8 training videos and really need to know the law if you hope to have a decent defense.  And you are suppose to seek out your own lawyer in advance of any problems. This may require paying a small retainer fee.

Not yet, but I'm leaning toward joining next time I travel and plan to carry.
