CDC Stats:
In 2023, there were 47,000 gun related deaths in the US.
Of that total, about 58% (27,300) were suicides.
About 38% (17,927) of the total are murders,
while the remainder involved:
law enforcement (604),
accidental (463)
or involved undetermined circumstances (434).
Gun murders rose dramatically during the coronavirus pandemic
but have declined substantially in more recent years. The number
of gun murders fell from a record 20,958 in 2021 to 17,927 in 2023,
a 14% decrease.
Gun suicides, on the other hand, have been on a mostly upward
trajectory for most of the last two decades and peaked in 2023
with 27,300 such fatalities.
It's estimated that between 15-20 million Semi-auto Sporting Rifles are owned privately in the US, which includes AR-15s and AK-47s.
About 1 in every 10 rifles sold each year in the US falls under the Sporting Rifle category.
CNN's researchers have determined that the AR-15 is THE single most popular type of rifle in the US.
Using the FBI's definition for mass shooting, a total of 105 deaths were attributed to mass shootings in 2023. That does not include the shooter who may have committed suicide or been killed by a Cop or other good guy with a gun.
CONCLUSION: Of the total number of murders in 2023, the fraction that are associated with mass shootings is 0.00586 (.586%).
It is completely illogical to dictate government policy and gun laws aimed at banning a type of firearm that's used in less than 0.6% of total gun murders That assumes all mass shootings involved "Assault Weapons," which they did not.
