General Discussion / Lost Firearm registration
« on: August 04, 2023, 09:16:35 AM »
Aloha Folks, Its been a minute,  hope you are all well.

I was helping my friend's father sort out his old firearms.  He is considering giving me 2 pistols since he is getting old and never uses them.  However, he has one pistol that he cannot find the registration for.  Is there a way to obtain a copy of the registration from HPD?   Does he even need a hard copy of the registration to private sale/transfer it to another individual?

I've bought a handgun through a private sale before (about 8 years ago) and the seller had to sign something, I forget what that piece of paper was, (it was not the bill of sale), I think it was backside of the registration, is that right?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but other than that, all I would need to do is follow the handgun process right? (submit permit to acquire each handgun, wait 14 days, pick up permit to acquire, pick up firearm, bring it back to HPD for inspection and to register it)

Mahalo for your help! :shaka:

General Discussion / wire-free surveillance security camera system
« on: February 08, 2019, 10:41:48 AM »
My neighborhood used to be pretty safe, and has been pretty safe since most folks around here are retired and stay home and do yard work, that is, up until recently.  Our neighborhood had a couple of cars that were broken into within the last month, and yesterday some jacka$$ went though and opened/searched the storage sheds in my garage and stole the only thing of real value:  a Ryobi power drill set worth about $150.  But that is replaceable.  The real worry is that it occurred right after I left for work in the morning and while my mother was at home.   Had my mom went to garage and seen the perp, she may have been harmed.  It is sad we have to resort to doing this but it has come to the point where there is no risk too large to be taken for granted and we are willing to invest some $$$ for video surveillance.  We will look into other options like a garage door and/or fencing but right now I am interested in a reliable surveillance system with specific features.

I have been researching Amazon, etc, for a video camera surveillance system.  There are some decent systems with good reviews but most of them require at least a power line running from camera to power source.   This is difficult considering the places where I would like to place cameras are not exactly close to  any power outlets.  And also would like to place cameras out of reach of intruders.   I want to set up a completely wire-free system with 4 cameras.   Does anyone have experience or suggestions on completely wire-free systems?   I know costco has the "Arlo" package, any thoughts on this system?

Below is a list of some features I prefer:

1. Battery operated or solar or rechargeable and completely wire free cameras
2. 3-4 cameras
3. Network Video Recording or DVR with at least 1 terabyte hard drive or cloud storage of at least 7 days, preferably 1 month, with no monthly service/subscription fee
4. easy to connect to monitor and internet
5. ability to view using mobile device (my phone) via dedicated APP
6. prefer 1080p resolution but 720p or 960p  is ok
7. night vision (most cameras will be equipped with this feature)
8. motion detection so it records only when get action

Also, not sure how my internet connection would factor in,  right now i have shi++y  HawaiianTel,  but plan to upgrade to Spectrum very soon, any thoughts on how internet connection may factor in?

Thank you folks, I am trying to set this up ASAP since the perps may come back and steal more or potentially do more harm than steal,  I can always count on the preppers and professionals on this forum for fast and reliable advice of which I am very grateful!   :shaka:

General Discussion / How to conduct private firearm sale
« on: May 15, 2018, 09:04:27 AM »
I am wanting to sell a long gun but have never conducted a private firearm sell.  I am sure you fine forum members would be able to guide me.

From what I gather:
1. most folks meet at HPD to conduct the transfer, but I would feel uncomfortable uncasing and transferring the firearm "on the sidewalk", is it ok to faciliate the transfer inside the regsistration office at HPD?
2. most folks use a "bill of sale", which states who is the former owner and new owner and both parties sign, anyone have a template I may use?
3. new owner must have current permit to purchase, would I, the seller, be responsible for verifying that the permit to purchase is valid?
4. would I, the seller, need a valid permit to sell my firearm?
5. while we're at it, is the process the same for handgun/pistol?  does the 2 week waiting period apply? Do i need a valid permit to sell a pistol?

Off Topic / Biki Bike Rentals
« on: July 06, 2017, 06:50:18 PM »
Biki Bike Rental kiosks are popping up all over Honolulu.  Saw one, it says $3.50 for 30 minutes, and boasts you can get anywhere across Honolulu in 20-25 minutes. (Yeah right!) The project has already hit roadblocks and criticism saying it was not well thought out.
1. No helmets included with rental, effectively advocating unsafe riding.
2. No storage basket available for use to run shopping errands.
3. Single speed.
4. Not sure if bike lock included, problematic if leaving bike to go store
5. No disclaimer about safe riding laws, problemtic if you are a tourist unfamiliar with local laws.
6. Some bikes had hit the streets before license registration stickers were put on them.

General Discussion / wish.com (shhhhhh secret)
« on: March 14, 2017, 12:40:58 PM »
I recenrly heard about an ebay-like online shopping site called wish.com.   this site rocks. the guys behind it aimed at connecting consumers directly with manufacturers primarily in China, which is why many of the items available on the site are dirt cheap and way cheaper than what you would find in store or even on ebay or amazon.  this site is going to blow up in the next few years.

you won't find brand name items on wish.com. you will find cheap generic items from small electronics and cables, to outdoor equipment, to arts and craft hobbyist items, to tactical gear like molle bags and accesories!

I have purchased maybe about 8 items and spent less than $25. I have receieved 2 items so far.  the only downside ia many items have 2-3 week shipping times, probably how they keep shipping prices so low.

check ot out and tell us what you think and what cool items you have found!

General Discussion / Ammo in surplus because Hillary wasn't elected
« on: February 03, 2017, 11:03:20 AM »
We can expect to see a surplus on ammo because Hillary wasn't elected. Ammo makers produced extra ammo in anticipation of buy frenzy if Hillary had been elected, which as we all know, didn't precipitate.

General Discussion / SILENCERS!!!

please please please.....

Hearing Protection Act that mandates the use of silencers in order to protect ears.
they made a good point, there is no time for a cop to ponder hearing protection when engaging in a gun fight.

General Discussion / 300th homicide recorded in Chiraq 2016
« on: June 20, 2016, 04:14:05 PM »
The 300th homicide has been recorded in the city of Chicago for 2016.

Including 1300+ injuries.

Math time:

300 homicides / 24 weeks thus far in 2016 = 12.5 homicides per week.

To put in perspective thats 50 homicides per month since 2016 started.

There has been an Orlando-sized shooting event every month in the city of Chicago since 2016 began.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2016/06/15/student-used-pepper-spray-take-down-seattle-campus-shooter/85958970/

Video released!

Jon Meis 22 year old student who subdued shotgun wielding gunman at Seattle Pacific University in 2014 with pepper spray and bare feet!

Aaron Ybarra killed 1 and injured several more before jon meis took him down with pepper spray and barefeet. He even un-knifed him after he wrestled the shotgun away!

It is possible to stop an active shooter!

This made me think: how hard could it have been to tackle the Orlando shooter from behind with 2 guys and prevent further death and injury?

Off Topic / Need help, water heater
« on: April 30, 2016, 05:01:40 PM »
We have a solar water heating system.  A few months ago we started noticing that the water isn't as hot as it used to be.  Around the same time I noticed that the water heating panels on my roof were stuck in the "up" position and I haven't seen them articulate back to the "flat" position.

The water starts off really hot, within 30 seconds it becomes luke warm and I have to adjust the knob to a hotter setting, a few minutes later it becomes luke warm again and I need to adjust to a further hotter setting.  By the time my shower is pau, I have the water temp knob at the hottest setting, the setting where normally it would be hot enough to burn skin.

Anyone here know about water heaters or solar water heaters?
I don't know much but I can suspect a few things:
1. the solar panels are defective
2. the water heater is defective
3. the low winter sun threw off the heat or timer settings

Is there a way to adjust the heat or timer settings?
Help needed!  Thanks a lot folks!

General Discussion / Texas Gun Store Smash and Grab Robbery
« on: March 03, 2016, 07:02:27 AM »
10 suspects use a pickup truck and chains to rip of the store's doors.  They proceed to hastily smash and grab up to 50 handguns from the display cases and a few rifles before leaving in the robbery that lasted 2 minutes. A few arrests may have been already made.

Decided to show this as a precaution, especially to local gun store owners, although it would be extremely difficult to get away with such a brazen heist in Hawaii, its still good to know what determined criminals are capable of in order to prepare and address safety and security concerns appropriately.

General Discussion / Pegboards - wall anchors
« on: January 18, 2016, 04:26:26 PM »
I've spent a chunk of time this weekend looking online and in-stores for a suitable pegboard kit.

The plastic pegboards they sell on Amazon and ebay but none will ship to Hawaii.

Homedepot has the traditional MDF/pressed wood fiber pegboards but they are not in good shape, and I want a plastic or metal pegboard, not wood.

I found one seller that will ship a metal (galvanized steel) pegboard kit to Hawaii, but I would like to use plastic flex-lock J hooks, can the plastic peg-hooks be used on a metal pegboard?

Anyone have any pegboard experience?  plastic vs. metal panels?

General Discussion / Cook County Jail Locked down due to lack of staff

What happens to jail and prison occupants if apocolyptic events (i.e. zombies, war, complete economic meltdown, emp, catastrophic asteroid) occur outside the walls?

Season 4 of the walking dead offered a glimpse of what could happen at a prison but what are the procedures for when societal collapse occurs and workers can't get there?
