State renewed lease for 15 years in mid March 2022. Shane wanted feed back from the hunting community. Said we are in good shape going foward in #s, but next two years might be tough.

86-87% drop in Axis population seems like a huge decrease.

We saw tons of Mouflon this years hunt, not so much deer and we had to hunt the hardest this year over any other year for Axis. I would say the findings are on par with the results.

As a meat hunter, I prefer hunting and eating Axis.

I got the sheets in case anyone wants to see them. Lanai hunters made a good point that there is deer all over the island not just in hunting areas. Last year one guy counted 249 deer in the city.

Especially since it's been really dry, the deer are going to move out of the hunting areas and closer to the safety zones, nearer to Lanai city, and the wetter areas in the middle of the island.

This estimate of 538 deer on the public hunting units is really bad.  Residents from all the islands go there for deer hunting and great meat.  The deer (and moflon) hunts are a big economic driver for the local economy, the only thing bringing people in other than high end tourism.

It is particularly egregious that the Maui DHHC (Department of Housing and Human Concerns) gave Pulama Lanai (Larry Ellison, one of the richest men on earth)  a grant for $120,443 to kill 2000 does last year.

So we taxpayers paid to create this problem of ruining the best hunting opportunity that us regular folks have.

What gives?
