Title: How are you preparing/prepared for Corona?
Post by: changemyoil66 on February 25, 2020, 01:41:54 PM
The only thing I did was pick up some N95 mask from Lowe's (sold out now) and order a few more days of food from Mountain House from Amazon.

Other than that, we got about 1 month of food, but can stretch it if need to ration.  Water is g2g, cause water should still work if everyone is forced to stay indoors.  Not like a hurricane.  But I do have lots of stored water.

Got lots of canned goods already.

Need to pick up more cat food cause I ain't sharing my expensive Mountain House with them.

Things I've noticed with different freeze dried brands.

1) Wise gave some people the runs
2) Auckland is cheaper, but cause mainly carbs.  Not much protein.  More rices, pastas, etc...MH has been stew, eggs, chicken, etc...
3) Most brands are high in sodium, probably cause the assumption is you're outdoors and sweating a lot or SHTF and no matter.  Not good to eat every meal just because.

If everyone is staying home, who's running the water pumping stations and treatment plant?

Ever hear of Murphy?  That'll be the moment the water main near your house breaks and nobody showed up for work at the water main repair office.   :shake:

Works even better, free water for everyone.  No need pay.  Just go outside with bucket and g2g.  Can even take bath in it too.

That was gonna be my response. . .

But seriously, nothing in particular.  I may postpone or cancel a work trip to Japan currently scheduled for end of March.  The team that I am traveling with are assuming (or more like optimistically hoping) that things in Japan will have settled down or will be controlled better by then with the Olympics right around the corner.  Personally, I think things will only get worse.

About my only prep is to continue to practice common sense, including hygiene.  Don't plan on stocking up on anything or doing anything drastic.

N95 masks won't help
You can eat the cats

How am I preparing for Corona? I’m buying it buy the case and buying their stock.

I’m not doing anything except limit my exposure to others. In other words I am moving shortly. So I will have to travel. But after that I have a duty to try and do whatever I can to not bring any illness home to my wife. She is so weak right now she may not even survive the flu. Any travel I am able to do on the mainland will be by car rather than plane. There was a time when I was flying everyday for work. And I was constantly sick.

I won’t stop going out and do things. But I will stay away from planes, buses and any situation where a lot of people are crammed into a small place and breathing in others breath continuously. I know this won’t stop me from getting sick. But it will help to limit my exposure.

I don't drink Coronas much anymore, but I did enjoy them from time to time.   ;D

Right now, I'm more concerned about travel and if I did, would that affect those around me.  While I don't care for young or elderly anymore, I have friends that do.

Looks like our leadership is cancelling travel to Japan and Korea "for the time being", so no work trip to Japan.  Can't say I'm disappointed though.

At home I just I checked the expiration dates on freeze dried food.

At work we had our first trial run.  We had a patient who had a fever who had been on the mainland with other people who were from China.  But they were not sick and they had left china before the travel ban.   We discussed it with department of health and they were actually not incompetent (which had been my experience with every other state government agency).  We had testing ready to go if needed.   But the patient was better by the time he got back from the mainland.   It was a good dry run for handling the patients. The best thing is that the patient was informed enough to call before just showing up.

The problem with Big Island is we wont have capacity for lots of in-hospital patients especially for ICU care and we wont have the capacity for lifeflights to honolulu if there is a big outbreak.  But hopefully we are smarter than the Chinese and wont all panic and rush to the hospital for cold symptoms were everyone got exposed.   If that happens I suspect we will have to open an emergency hospital in the abandoned coast guard base near us.  Even though it is abandoned, the government still pays (we pay, that is) for new roofs and windows every few years.

Should be fun but hopefully it will just be boring and nothing happens.

Really?  Wow!  That didn't take long for the panic to start.  And here I was gonna make my usual Sams run today.  I was gonna go last Friday, but it was around lunch and I didn't want to go during the lunch crowd.

Gloves?  I have a couple of boxes of nitrile gloves.  Didn't think that was a run item.  Why people always panic buy TP is funny to me.  I almost always have plenty for a while.  I guess it's different if you're buying for a household of 3+, but TP lasts a while for my situation.

I heard Purell and other hand sanitizers were out too.

Went to Sams Keeaumoku yesterday after work for my usual run.  I typically swing by there every 3-4 weeks.  I got there at around 6:30.  There was actually plenty of parking when I got there, but no wagons.  Picked up what I needed and picked up some prep items to supplement what I already have.  I did notice that TP aisles were completely wiped out.  There had bottled water, but it was down to the filtered water or the tiny "half sized" bottles.  People were loading up like 4-8 cases at at time!   :o  Rice was out and I saw a bunch of people loading up on instant ramen.  Select canned foods were out, but there were still plenty available if you wanted/needed.  The "scan your own" checkout line was actually very fast.  They were restocking the cleaning wipes when I passed by that aisle and people were snatching them up.  They were out of hand sanitizer.

When I got back to my car, it was around 7 pm and I guess people saw the warnings on the evening news and the parking lot was packed and long lines of cars trying to get into the parking lot.  If it was like that when I got to the parking lot, I would've just gone home.  The panic the announcement caused is crazy.  I heard Hawaii Kai Costco was even worse!

I live a bit north of you (I think).
I usually keep about 6 months worth of food, not counting the food that wanders around the yard
or is planted.
Cattle, pigs, Fruit trees, veggies et al.
I have 16 hens and 3 roosters.
34,000 gallons of catchment water and Ag ditch water.
Plus all the other prep stuff,  soaps, medicine et al.
I too am retired so don't go out much.
Investigate "Family cloths" it will reduce your toilet paper
requirements if you switch over.  If you ever had kids,
and used traditional diapers you know the drill.

Btw, if anyone need me TP and PT, hit up Lowe’s. They have lots and NO lines or craziness.

Went tonight for other stuff and say that they had lots of TP, PT and other stuff peeps have been hoarding from Costco and Sams. Clorox wipes, Lysol, etc.

Only had thing about going to Lowe’s for me is that I ALWAYS end up buying more than what I went there for in the first place.

Lowes is a 100+mile trip for me but they do give me a 10% discount!  I dropped Costco years ago, as they don't discount Vets.
Lowes, Home depot, HPM, and most car parts places do. If you are a Vet always ask and have your ID ready.

Heard from friends in WA state.  One lives in Snoqualmie Ridge (east side of I-5 corridor) and seems like TP and bananas are the top items being hoarded.  Yes, bananas!  I asked them what's up with that.  Seems like it's a "neighorhood joke" for my one friend since she's from a different part of WA state.  But it seems like folks in the area stock up on TP and bananas whenever there's report of a bad storm or other even coming.

I think it the news pushing the story and social media showing doctors in China screaming on the phone, video with chinese in hazmat suits running a patient in a gurney down the middle of the street, video of people being chained inside their apartments and bodies laying in the hallways of chinese hospitals.

Throw in the fact that zombies dont walk anymore, they run crazy fast and can climb 100 ft walls and you got a panic on your hands.

Lactose intolerant?   ???  She doesn't hoard bananas, but it seems like a common thing for folks in Western WA.

I can see how the staples of the region are bought up.  Like rice here.  I actually don't eat much rice when I'm preparing meals at home, but I do sometimes when I eat out.

I think most of these "traditions" are based on how difficult it is to make regular meals without fresh products, whether dairy, meat, vegetables, fruits or breads.  If you couldn't travel or if the stores are sold out, you were SOL.

That was before canned, vacuum packed and frozen foods that keep for months or years.

Stuff you recommend will FU cesspools and septic systems.
Was perfect for pit toilets.
Read up on "Family cloths"
Save a tree and eliminate a Democrat union employee.
Long story I got a tour of a toilet paper manufacturing
facility in WA state years ago.  Quite the operation.
from trees in the river to packaged goods.
My dad was buddy to the plant manager,
so I got more than the "Public" tour.

If SHTF, water will not be running and be a valuable commodity.
Bidet won't work nor will flushing toilets and using it to wash Family cloths would be a waste of water.
I'll $#1t in a hole in the  ground and use my phone book.

On the other hand, out here we literally have  garbage disposals in our 50 gallon collection tank which grinds everything to be low pressure pumped thru a 2" pipe.
If water is still running, I'll have no prob with Ma Bell TP and my genny.  :D

On the Big Island, most people have there own water systems.  You have to catch your own water because the county only has water in the city or in subdivisions with small lots.  Understandable, it would cost too much to run water pipes in subdivisions where each lot is 3 acres or bigger.

Went to Don Qui in PC today around what is usually prime time (6-7 pm). Place was a ghost town. Parking lot barely 1/3 full. Maybe 1-2 in line at any checkout when usually like at least 4-5 deep.

Fine by me.  I HATE crowds and lines.

But seriously, was pretty creepy going there and it was pretty empty.  Heard that Sams and Walmart also pretty empty.  Wondering how DonQ will look next Tue (Senior day).  :(

Some idiot let their dogs loose which broke thru the fence and destroyed my flock of chickens.
Not only do I lose my supply of fresh eggs, they were kinda pet like and would greet us just like a dog would when we returned home.  :'(
Marilynn would literally hang out with me under the trucks when I worked on them.
No more morning greeting's, playtime before sunset or just flocking around.
Of course I reported it and when the cop arrived, he told me "You need to harden your property" .

That sucks.   :(

That happened to the geese that my uncle had at his property in PC.  The next property uphill side would have wild dogs come around every now and then and guess the broke through the fence and/or thick brush one night.  Geese are quite territorial, but also pretty good pets if they are familiar with you.

After the cop said that, you should've whacked him in the head and if he took offense, you could've said "You need to harden your head". . .  8)

Nah, nah, don't do that. . .

I don't know what kind of property you have.
I have dogs (5) that free run with the chickens( I have 27),
my chickens free range, makes finding nests interesting.
I also have a donkey,  He will kill any strange animal in
his territory.  Already killed a goat.
I have seen my Heifer stomp wild pigs.
My Mule will attack strange people and anything else
he decides he doesn't like.
My property is not a good place to trespass on.

Went to Costco in Waipio right after 10AM opening.  My daughter needed a few basic things, and I needed to make a couple of returns.

The LINE TO ENTER THE STORE started past the front of the store near the FlagShip Fast Lube and wrapped around the food court/front doors,. down the side, and back to the entrance.  Took about 30 minutes to get in.  About 10 minutes later, I overheard a walkie talkie saying the entrance line was cleared.

TP and 40-pack 16oz bottled water was limited to 1 per member.  If you brought another person who's on your membership, that doesn't count.  Had to have two paid memberships to get 2 of each.

The TP and water line was super quick with 3-4 employees loading the items in carts.

No problems shopping for everything else.  Checkout was no worse than most nights before a big event - Thanksgiving, Super Bowl, etc.  Took 15 minutes to check out.

So, I've got surplus TP AND ammo!    :geekdanc:

I did see 3, maybe 4, people wearing masks.  The only thing that caught my eye as being out was rubbing alcohol and whatever else was on the shelves next to it.  I didn't stop to read all the signs.  They didn't have the Nyquil I normally buy, but they had a Nyquil/Dayquil combo pack.

Worst thing was parking.  People blocking everyone while they sat and waited for a spot.  I got lucky and found a spot open up right after I filled the gas tank.

Lots of people, but Costco did a great job moving everyone in and out.

I guess I got lucky in going today then.

Maybe it was crazy for the workers, but customers were not fighting over the last must-have items.

I did see a few walking out with just TP, paper towels (Bounty went on sale yesterday) and bottled water.  Most people were apparently like us, doing our regular shopping and grabbing some extra necessities while there.

I just ordered refills on my two daily meds from Kaiser pharmacy.  Should arrive next week.

I normally get a 3 month's supply of each Rx. Kaiser offers a discount for mail delivery:  3 months for the price of 2.

If the situation worsens as many fear, the healthcare system could start seeing longer wait times for routine services -- like refills.  I imagine exceptions for Rx coverage might be offered to let us get refills outside of our "network" for the same price/co-pay, but I've not seen anything like that announced.

I have been deepening my preparations.  Focused on flu medications, then meat (freeze), then luxuries (chocolate, cookies, beer, whisky). One thing I realised was I needed to get a supply of milk for our babies.  Dry formula was crazy expensive.  Went with powdered milk (6lbs), enough for 32 days for our daughter.  Next is gasoline(25 gallons) and filling up our water tanks. I fully expect a terrorist attack on th e USA when the virus is at its peak.

Carnation Evaporated Milk.

Great for cooking, and not too bad for drinking.  It's thicker and creamier than fresh, because it has less water (hence, the "Evaporated"  :shaka:).  It's more stable for longer term shelf life.

According to trusted sources, it's just as nutritious as fresh.

Adding a little water makes it less thick and creamy, similar to normal milk.  For cooking, just add as you would normal milk.  For drinking or cereal, add a little water.

I have a couple of cases in the pantry from Costco.      My mom used to always have this in the cupboard just in case we ran out of cold milk while baking or cooking.

I regretfully canceled my 15 day trip to Vegas starting Mar 31.  Our high school reunion there got canceled and we normally go to Costco, Sams or Walmart to pick up supplies, food and drinks for the condo.  With long lines and bare shelves and the cancellation of the event I was going there for, I decided to just stay home.  HA and our time share is waiving all penalties and fees.  Additionally, my daughter who lives there said a lot of the big showrooms and other places are closing.  Just not a good time to travel.

What Kind of batteries?
I have a 10.6 kWh solar system designed, I'm still vacillating
on Batteries. Old school says Forklift batteries, but all the new
EV batteries are interesting. I missed installing the system in 2019
for taxes, but will finish it in 2020.
I'm wondering about buying old Tesla car batteries.
They should be virtually free.
I intend to be "off Grid" by the end of 2021.
So Hawaii "green" Democrats can go Eff themselves.
And Kuelana's(sp?)vision of a government also.
( I had to toss that in).

Yeah.  There are still people there working their way through the TP they hoarded during the last big shipping shutdown -- decades ago!

I had a coworker (female, of course) who said she goes to look for decorations or luggage,  and she STILL finds bulks of TP she bought then and forgot about.  She also can't resist a good TP sale ad -- has to go buy even more!

I heard she passed about 9 years after I left that position.  Didn't find out until a year afterward.

When I think of her, all I can think of is her house stockpiled with TP, and the surprise her relatives must have experienced finding it all over the house!      :shaka:

I do remember my mom having this "thing" for disguising our extra TP with covers.  Some were crocheted hats, others were dolls in wide, Southern Belle type dresses.  I seem to remember we had a few different color "roll covers" to match the TP colors.

We were broke back then, so if the colors cost more than the white, I'm sure the covers were her way of keeping up with the "TP fashion of the day" without spending more on TP.

Went to Kapolei Costco yesterday. There was about 100 yard long line. Took about 10 minutes to get in. There was a guy with a bull horn telling us the wait line is much longer inside. Once we made it inside, there was no line. I was so confused. Where was the line he warned us about? Maybe he was trying to scare us off. There were a couple people warning us in the parking lot that the line was 1.5 hours long.

Waipio had line down the side and halfway around the back on Sunday morning. Took about 15 minutes to get in at 10. No TP, no sanitizer, etc.

Checkout line went pretty quick at 11AM only about 10 minutes total.

Went to Costco Waipio before 3:30.  Lucked out and got a parking spot right beside the crosswalk at the Entrance.

Entrance is a gauntlet now.  Have to go around to the left, get a cart, get in line, and then wait for the employee directing "traffic" to let the line move.  The Entrance and Exit lines are once again crossing each other, so they stop one line to let the other go.

No real wait to get in.  Exit line was light, and Entrance only had a few ahead of me.

Went to Customer Service to return an item.  Watched the employees yelling to "herd" people from line to line. I think they were practicing for when there are more people.  Really not necessary to be drill sergeants at that moment.

All the Dairy is now where the produce used to be.  Every item had a "LIMIT 1" sign above it.  The cashiers were being alerted by the registers when something exceeded the limits, which they did enforce.

Didn't see TP or Bounty, but did get a case of bottled water (LIMIT 1) and for some reason Damp Rid was also limited to 1.   :wtf:

No pork'n'beans or vienna sausages, but they had SPAM (go figure).

One girl was herding people at the top of her lungs around the pharmacy shelves to the self-checkout lines that were closed off by lines of buggies.  Normal checkout lines were moving pretty quickly.  I imagine the item limits help.

Home Depot is shortening their hours, BTW.  They will open at normal times, but close at 6PM.

I'm anticipating all stores following that trend.  I haven't heard of any slow-downs in shipping to Hawaii, but I have a feeling that's going to be the case.

This is going to get worse before it gets better.

Oh my, a History Channel production?

Since I am an older-type person, my favorite disaster movie is "Panic In The Year Zero" from 1962.
No special effects.
BTW, since most of my family is Mormon, we've been prepping for the past 50 years. I'm not kidding.

The movie was made in 1996, before Al Gore invented the Internet.

They need to do a refresh and add the hysteria created by loss of cell and web access this would cause.  There are people who go nuts now if their ISP goes down for half a day.

If you watched that video of Biden and didn't come away believing he's suffering from dementia, I don't know what it would take.  He's trying to give talking points that have to be on the prompter in front of him, and he STILL can't do more than toss out gibberish.

I'm surprised he's not being shadowed by a doctor specializing in strokes and aneurysms, since Joe has a history.

Since I bought that one gal. pump sprayer from HD for $10 to use as a butt hole cleaner, one roll of tp can last me 3 months. 450 sheets per roll and use only 4 to dry, that is a lot of dumps.  It is true what many say about bidet style cleaning, you not only feel cleaner, you are cleaner.  After spraying and make sure you are hitting your butt hole and not your ass, wipe with with some tp and it will be clean with no brown streaks on it.  If you have wahines in the house, you can really save on tp if they use it when they pee and then use a hand towel to dry.

My friend's fridge/freezer konked out yesterday.  So she had to scramble to find one.  With Sears on Hawaii way smaller than they used to be, hopefully Lowe's or Home Depot can.  But that is one thing that would be pretty  :shake: right now.

Of course this morning, I hear some strange noises coming from my fridge/freezer.  It's probably the most stocked it has ever been.  Even the beer mugs came out of the freezer.   8)

My experience with Best Buy is I had to ask if they had the model fridge or washer/dryer I wanted ON ISLAND if I needed it before 3-8 weeks.  If it's in the warehouse, you can get it as soon as they can schedule delivery, usually in 2-3 days.

Tell your friend to also look at Hawaii Energy rebates.  Sometimes you can get a rebate if you recycle the old fridge.  The "rid-a-fridge" deal requires the fridge be running, but I've turned in fridges that were working except not cooling as well as previously.  "Running" to me means it turns on and makes noise.   :geekdanc: :shaka:

They also have programs that recycle ANY fridge just to keep the things out of the landfill.   Both programs recycle as many components possible, including copper tubing and refrigerant.

Quote
For a limited time, receive a $150 rebate* when you purchase a qualifying ENERGY STAR® certified refrigerator from a participating retailer**.

**Participants are listed on the website by island.

Quote
Let us recycle that old working refrigerator/freezer for FREE and pay you! Residents of Hawaii island, Maui County and Oahu will receive $75 for each one.

https://hawaiienergy.com/for-homes/rebates/appliances

You can use one of those rebates or the other, but not both.

Now that we've been living in the CV19 pandemic for weeks now, had it changed how you plan to prepare moving forward?  What have you been doing that the current situation reinforced?

In general, I don't plan on doing anything different overall.  One may be to pay attention to the news/reports more as situations develop in other countries.  Don't feel that I got caught unaware or behind, but I do think I could have done better.  In general, I tend to stay away from the MSM news sources for other reasons.

One aspect of preparation that I always felt was an important consideration was how people react to whatever the situation.  Whether it be a pandemic, natural disaster, strike, whatever.  There were many things that happened that were expected, but also some things that I found that were quite  ???  Overall, I think a lot of what I noticed that made me scratch my head was due to the irrational side of folks coming out.  That's usually what worries me the most in many situations.

I don't do much different myself, but I'm retired in a rural area, and a pretty much stay at home guy.
I made a dump, beer, milk, post office, and gas run yesterday, no great difference other than the tourists are gone.
I normally hit most the worlds news sites daily while I stream talk radio in the morning.
Interesting enough, Hawaii's Lockdown is just like the Russian Lockdown,  except we don't need Digital passes to leave home.
I'd bet if Democrats had the infrastructure to do it we would have such a system also.
Amazing how much Freedom we casually toss away.
On a normal day in the USA about 6,700 people die from all causes.
With this Lockdown, anecdotally that number has dramatically decreased.
I hope the world's economic depression is worth it.
Hawaii certainly will not recover for many years.

Our situation is a little different as we had to move during this pandemic. Also, I had to get rid of a lot of preps, water and food before I moved. When we arrived in AZ we had absolutely nothing. Starting to recover from no food. We have about 3 weeks worth now. And we will begin a rotation of food stuffs after all of our stuff arrives. We need to obtain more dried food as my food expired just as I was moving. And the frozen and fresh food we planned on using up before the move had to be dumped due to my wife’s going back into the hospital twice in less than 3 months. We have nothing to cook with so everything has to be frozen/fresh but microwaveable. Or freezes dried. Frozen foods usually suck so we have been buying freshly prepared foods from Trader Joe’s that just need to be microwaved. At least we are at the point that we are no longer eating out for every meal. Water should be a little better situation for us as we have a lot more room to store water. We have been out shopping every day just to get the stuff we need to be functional. But tomorrow we start hunkering down as we have everything we need until our stuff arrives. If the world shut down tomorrow we have enough to survive for 3 weeks. It’s not a lot but it is better than the position we were in less than 2 weeks ago.

Yeah.  Timing couldn't have been much worse for you two.  Good to hear that things are settling down.

If I had a house, I think my preps would be different.  When I had a house in WA, my grandma offered to buy me one of those chest freezers, but I never got around to it.  Ok since I moved home maybe 3-4 years after I bought my house.  I do miss having an enclosed 2 car garage though.  That and I had a 4 bedroom house with a decent sized back yard with landscape that was essentially zero maintenance.  Would've been a good area to have a cigar.

If the world shut down tomorrow, I'd have enough to survive for quite a while, particularly food wise.  I may not be eating the most healthy or what I would want to be eating, but I have plenty of food to last for a while.  I had been buying up Mountain House and other stuff here and there for a while.  I actually really like a few of the meals/packets and bought some cans of the ones that I like.  Can add some stuff here and there if I had to consume that for a while.  Until then, I've been trying to eat fresh foods, particularly fruits and veggies.  That and getting takeout here and there.  Bought 3 - 4lb chunks of fresh ahi.  Gave two away to buddies, but that was some awesome fish.

So far I just watch, listen, and learn.  This virus thing did I admit, catch me with my pants down.  Didn't think certain commodities would be hard to get, being that lots of people started to panic and hoard things like TP, rice, and canned goods.

We as a family will start watching our supplies a bit more closely, even when the State starts to open up more and more, we still will buy a pkg. of TP and a bag of rice here and there just incase there is a flare-up again and they need to shut things down.  People will again start panic buying.  I can't do without my TP. lol!!

I also plan to buy some more ammo.  I was doing quite a bit of shooting before the virus crap started but wasn't replenishing my ammo stash.  I just feel better having more than I think I need.  Better having too much than not having enough.....

As far as socializing I don't plan to go out much, even when the State opens up fully, whenever that happens.  I do have the pre-existing conditions that would make me vulnerable to the virus so I'll venture out when I think it's relatively safe.

I miss Vegas but I'll pass for a while.  The things they want to put in place just to open up is not worth the trip.

Not much else.
Prices were OK.
Just about everything else is overpriced or not available.
You would not believe the price of SPAM!
I'm just rotating stock.
I'm one of those anti-government prepper types.
Local Walmart is stripped of many items, as are many other stores.
Looks like people took their government checks and

Starting to see things come back into stock regularly, or at least more often.

Seems like TP and PT stocks have caught up and seeing that in stores regularly.  Even Sams has been having them offered for shipment pretty regularly.

Starting to see cleaning supplies on the shelves as well as hand sanitizer.  Many are the liquid versions, but still occasionally will see the gel versions.  Seeing the wipes come back into stock as well.  Seems like Lysol aerosol spray is still more difficult to find, but seeing lots of reports of stores having them in stock.  So seems like things are slowly returning to a balance.

Well, until the next even that spurs panic.

On a side note, a good friend is now 3 weeks into a new job with the Stevedores.  Seems like they are definitely still very busy.

When the run on stuff started and Costco and Sams were nuts, I found that Lowes was a good spot.  They had cleaning supplies, TP, PT, etc when even places like Walmart and Target was out.  I didn't need that stuff at that point, but I noticed when I went to Lowes a few times for other stuff, like smaller propane canisters, new pair of work gloves, etc.  The best was that Lowes was relatively empty and no lines, at least when I went.

What if SHTF before your case comes in?  The chances that happens is likely less than the plane that it's on going down. . . but it happens.  See movie Cast Away :shake:

[sarcasm off]

I've been meaning to try out teriyaki chicken and spaghetti with meat sauce.  I bet adding cheese to the spaghetti will help.  Told myself I would sample more of the MH stuff during the stay at home orders, but ended up going for takeout instead.  That and rotating through food stuffs in my fridge and freezer.

Don't jinx it.  Nah box is coming in tomorrow.  But what if I'm short 2 packets now when SHTF down the road???

The wife went to Sportsman's warehouse in OR and picked up teri chicken in the coffee can and chicken casserole or something.

I think you are better off doing what you have done.
Take out.
I have had many conversations about MH food and others
like it with a lot of SHTF types.
Most have to really doctor it up so much
it is almost not worth the effort.
That freeze dried stuff is good for on the move
and backpacking, but I'd use SOLAS bars in that case.
But hey, it is like Cilantro, you like it or you don't.

Have lots of friends who do the bar and restaurant thing, so good to support them. As well as the places I used to go before. Been trying others of course as well.

I actually like the few MH one that I’ve sampled. I think I would add stuff for the larger cans to switch it up here and there.

Wise Food on the other hand. Of the ones I’ve sampled, I’d say I could eat it and I’m sure it could be “good” in a pinch. But bleh.

Yup and some alfredo from MH.

The SOS taste like short break cookies.  I had a pack that lost it's vacuum seal.  Amazon replaced it and I ate the one that had the broken seal.  Good pre workout source for carbs.

I used to own a 45 foot sailboat and kept this in the lifeboat.
SOLAS rated. Required for ocean racing.
I never did any ocean racing, I spend all my time and money
getting ready to do so.
Ended up selling the boat before I could do a Vic-Maui race.

Probably overkill.  They tasted like coconut.
They are out of them today, probably because every sailor in the world stocked up.

Still a good choice.
As for dates, that is usually just for the "authorities"
That stuff lasts forever if the individual packets
are still sealed.

I bought mostly to taste test a while back, as well as an opportunity to diversify what I have.  Would definitely be a decent option for bug out, but I don't really intend on bugging anywhere.

Yeah, I am not too concerned about the date for personal use.  I've eaten many canned goods that were way beyond their date.  Particularly recently.  Gotta watch out for mandarin oranges, those cans can be explosive.

I have year round access to local grown oranges, tangerines and such
so I don't do canned ones.
Good to know about Tin canned ones for guys not so lucky.
For canned goods I only watch for bulging, damage, and bad smells.
I've got stuff 8 years old and it is still good.

Used to have an awesome orange tree in the back of my parents house.  It was a combination navel orange with some jabon in there.  It was from an airlayer from an uncles house and other relatives were always either asking to pick oranges or for my dad to may airlayers for them.  Miss that tree. . .  :(

1 June is the first day of Hurricane season.  Forecast I heard this morning is that Hawaii is currently expecting a lower than normal season with 2-6 tropical cyclones.  Hopefully things stay that way and no big storms head our way.  Stock of things are seeming to be improving.  TP and PT stocks seem good, as well as stuff like rice and flour.  Still seeing shortages on Lysol aerosol spray, but I don't see those as essential items in Hurricane season.

deaths will always lag since it takes a while for the patients to get sicker and die...

also, if you watch 45s twitter feed, the death rate is getting lower...

If the new cases are trending into lower age groups and fewer "high risk" individuals, the death rates can't help but drop.

Did anyone notice that the incubation period for this new "wave" of infections coincides with the George Floyd protests?

Hmmmmm.......

May 25th was the date of his death.  Protests & riots started the next week.  Roughly 4+ weeks .... time enough to become infected, become a carrier yourself and then share with others who are now testing positive.

my theory is that the vit d levels here are higher due to more sun exposure

Lil update from July 7

Just got this from Mayor Caldwell's conference:
25 cases in Honolulu (9 from gym cluster),
1 Kaneohe,
1 Kapalama,
1 Waimanalo,
3 Ewa Beach,
2 Waianae,
5 Kailua, and
3 Waipahu.
An airline cluster is up to 15. A food service has 4 cases with 3 family members as well,
A home products company has 3 cases and 1 family member,
a restaurant has 2,
care homes have 19 cases and 2 deaths,
and there is a Navy ship with 3 cases and 20 people in quarantine on the ship.
There were 2 travelers that went to Hilo and Kona respectively.

Nobody can find the #realdoctor to get a straight answer. Cases dipped for a while, then after lockdowns ended (and the riots) they spiked again. The media seems to be breathlessly waiting for an armageddon type scenario so that they can blame it on 45, but this looks like all the second wave we are going to get.

What I've noticed with the COVID situation is how the vast majority of people lack basic SA.  Just don't care.  Or both.

When I am out and about, I think I generally have decent SA.  Simple things like when you're at the grocery store, mall, etc.  I mean I've always noticed that and sort of shake my head at how oblivious people can be to what's going on around them, but I've noticed it a lot more recently.

That and I find it funny how people react and people who have actually made an obvious effort to keep their distance from me.  Not to be rude or anything, but some times it's folks that I would think most people would keep their distance from anyways.  I mean damn, I shower every day and think I'm am generally clean cut.  Why people think they need to distance themselves from me like that.   ???  :(
