How can people, college students of all people, be this stupid? There are different aspects of the Israel and Palestine issue that can be debated but here you have students marching in support for Palestine admitting they don't know what they are protesting. Why go to a rally offering your support if you don't understand what you are protesting.
I am looking for recommendations for some sort of product I can put on part of my AR-15 barrel. The handguard I have exposes a small portion of the flange behind the front sight post and it got quite hot. I was figuring that some sort of fabric covering for just that one spot. I know they make some fabric wraps but I saw one catch fire once on a hot barrel so looking for one that can withstand the heat.
Thanks in advance.

Political Discussion / No Labels
« on: January 26, 2024, 09:46:02 PM »
Is anyone following the No Labels group?
They were made to push for moderate candidates and policies and they have been talking about fielding a candidate for the 2024 presidential run.
They have also caught the attention of some democrats who are fear mongering that the No Labels might help Trump win.

I haven't heard of any activity by them in Hawaii though.
Off Topic / Interview with an (Almost) School Shooter
« on: December 17, 2023, 10:21:09 PM »
Jordan Peterson interview with a guy who almost went on a school shooting.

It starts with his broken home life all the way till his late teens, everything that set him on that path that was ultimately averted. A lot of people simply summarize active shooters as evil people but the more I learn about active shooters they really aren't always evil rather have been lead down a path of evil. The problem with quickly writing these people off as evil is that in demonizing someone you no longer need to look deeper to find out what created them and therefore you lack understanding of how to stop them.

It is almost 2 hours long and it is a heavy listen and heartbreaking but feels important to listen to in this current era of mass killings we are in. It is also available on podcast.

Political Discussion / Did the ACLU grow a spine?
« on: December 12, 2023, 09:35:55 PM »
The ACLU used to stand for free speech rights but they went in the woke direction. Now they are defending the NRA in a free speech case.

After 17 people were killed at the Parkland, Florida, school, Vullo called on banks and insurance companies operating in New York to discontinue their association with gun-promoting groups.

In letters to companies and news releases, she urged operators to consider “reputational risks” from doing business with the NRA and other gun groups.

The NRA sued Vullo after multiple entities cut ties or decided not to do business with the Fairfax, Virginia-based organization. The federal appeals court in New York rejected the NRA’s claims, saying Vullo acted in good faith and within the bounds of her job.

But the ACLU, in additional comments posted on X, argued that if the Supreme Court doesn’t intervene, it could create a “dangerous playbook” for regulatory agencies across the country to blacklist or punish “viewpoint-based organizations” including abortion rights groups, environmental groups and even the ACLU itself.
Political Discussion / HPD wants hazard pay for work during COVID

I think the paramedics and EMTs should get this way before the police. Fire should get it before HPD gets considered too.
General Discussion / Not a silencer silencer?
« on: December 03, 2023, 04:00:28 PM »
Video is a couple years old but this is the first I have heard of this product.
Checked local law to see if it would pass muster but Hawaii law prohibits silencers and "devices for deadening or muffling the sound of discharged firearms" so I am guessing it would come down to a test case.
Has anyone seen or tried this?

I could see this as a good product for hunting or home defense to limit hearing damage but I don't want to be the test case.

The section of the organ responsible for controlling how people respond is said to be switched off by defeat, which increases the likelihood of a person acting in irrational and aggressive ways. Losing, it seems, is a trigger for a mental mechanism that leads to explosive tendencies in the most hardcore fans. In more moderate followers, however, the response to a loss is less violent and more introspective.
The findings explain the extreme attachment people have with their sports team and the subsequent hooliganism and tribalism that these emotional investments can create.

This was about sports but it sure would seem applicable to politics. Just look at Trump's win in 2016 and his loss in 2020.
Fascinating stuff.
Off Topic / Fall of Minneapolis Documentary about George Floyd incident
« on: November 22, 2023, 03:28:12 PM »
Came across this documentary last night. (Thanks Flapp)

It tells the story of what happened to Floyd and the aftermath from the point of view of the police officers. It isn't comprehensive or an objective documentary but it is well done. It is free to watch

It covers a fair amount of the information from the case that was excluded from the trial which, in my opinion, had enough reasonable doubt to reject murder charges.
Political Discussion / Tim Scott suspends campaign
« on: November 13, 2023, 07:17:46 PM »

Unfortunate news but if all the republican candidates coalesce behind a single challenger to Trump they have a chance of beating him.

Wonder what his next step will be, maybe VP or cabinet position? He didn't have the best performance at the debates which didn't help him.
Legal and Activism / Breakdown of Rahimi SCOTUS gun case hearing
« on: November 12, 2023, 08:30:53 PM »
Just listened to this recent podcast breaking down the Rahimi case revolving around a male caught with a gun while he was prohibited by a domestic violence protection order. If you nerd out on legal challenges it is pretty interesting.

Ultimately this is pretty much the last type of case we want as a test case for gun rights in relation to restraining orders because this guy was a dirt bag domestic violence guy who should have been in jail instead of merely a restraining order on him. Because of the details of the case, due process wasn't even at issue.

The panel didn't seem to think Rahimi would win and frankly I don't think the defendant should win in this case either.

Maybe in the future we will get a proper due process case but depends how they rule on this one first.

Rather surprised in the criticisms Cuomo had for the democrats in this video. I am impressed.

Firearms and Accessories / Pistol red dot question
« on: November 02, 2023, 08:26:43 PM »
I was thinking about going down the path of putting a red dot on my pistol. I know that you have to train with it to get used to it but I am trying to figure out how it affects me if I get used to the red dot and go back to irons on a different gun. Would searching for irons become difficult after I get used to finding the red dot quickly?
The narrative in the news and public discourse sends the image that the Supreme court is broken, heavily partisan, and always votes along political lines.

This breakdown shows just how untrue this is.
Excerpt: Out of 58 cases for the October 2022 term half were decided unanimously and only 5 were along the 6 to 3 political lines.

Saw this on the way to work today...
If you aren't familiar with the story, Biden made a speech in Maui about the fire where he told a time there was a small fire in his lake house and he almost lost his car and cat.
