Saiga conversion plans
« on: August 20, 2009, 09:51:55 PM »
I have a Saiga in 7.62x39 that I plan on converting but still need to get out to the range to test it out in its stock form.  Does anybody have any advice on the conversion?

I plan on replacing the

Buttstock: http://www.tapco.com/proddesc.aspx?Id=STK06160BLACK
Pistol Grip: http://www.tapco.com/proddesc.aspx?Id=STK06201BLACK

With all these parts, the rifle should comply with 922(r) according to this post on the Saiga forums.

Well, I finally got to take my Saiga out to the range.  I have to say that it is a wonderful piece of equipment.  I have heard that many people don't like the hunting rifle style grip on it, but honestly, I loved it.  I haven't tried an authentic style AK-47, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I may leave it as is.

The whole Saiga conversion trend started as a result of Clinton's assault weapons ban.  Can't buy an AK?  Buy a Saiga and make it look like an AK!

Now, of course, AKs are back on the market.

Personally, I have very little interest in AKs, but I do like the Saiga.  Pretty much everything I like about it is what gets lost in the conversion.  I've thought many times about buying one, a carbine length in 7.62 x 39, but since I have an SKS already, the poor Saiga is on the "C" list.

Unless I stumble across a great deal on one, maybe one that's been converted, and I can restore it!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

I like the way the Saiga fires in its stock form but have yet to try a rifle in a pistol grip form. I still need to test its accuracy on paper, but it seems pretty good.

By the way, here is a thread with pics of someone doing a conversion and repainting for anyone interested. http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=483487

I'm still debating whether or not to convert my Saiga 7.62. It came with a Tapaco collapsible stock but I swapped it out with my Saiga 12.
To be honest I only picked up the 7.62 because the price was right. I might do the conversions but more then likely I'll just put a wood stock on it and dub it complete.
