There will always be new types of rounds, with the penultimate development being the smart bullet (Xacto program).

Demo starts around 4:05. The practical use for LEO and soldiers would be a cartridge that can take out a moving target, and eventually, a target behind a wall. How would the latter work in real life, without necessarily having a line of sight to the target? The defender might use a sensor like the one that local firm Oceanit was working on 10 years ago.

Anyway, for us mere mortals, the things we should be most interested in are the drag coefficient vs. velocity, the damage per inch of penetration (for unshielded or shielded targets), and the cost of ammo. Some inventions take years to come out of the lab. Who would have thought that 6.5 Creedmoor could have been developed after a century of rifle cartridge research (when lots of old folks thought everything was already invented)? This is the best time to be a shooter, as we have multiple cartridge types, lots of independent weapons makers, and many tools to optimize the shooting experience.
