I think I've read Sig did tests on shortening barrels for creed.  Anything below 18" is making more fire than velocity.   Of course, for any firearm,  you lose performance for any cartridge the shorter the barrel.

I still fantasize having a shooting range.  Not a dirt patch covered with shotgun hulls and .22 cases.
