Preparedness and Survival / Re: Ham Radio Operators
« on: February 04, 2014, 08:36:58 AM »
marine radios require a whole separate license. yachties don't want their bandwith polluted by nerds, but many of them have ham tickets and carry ham gear in plastic bags just in case.

Thanks hvy.  That's something else I need to look into.  I am still on the fence about a handheld VHF/UHF radio, but my wife tells me better safe than sorry.

Thanks everyone.  I think I'm gonna do it too.  My father-in-law was big time into it and still has some of his equipment.  He lives in the valley by JI808.  He has postcards with handles from people all over the world that he has talked to.  And like Surf my other half was into CB in the 80's.  Did you hang out with the group at the keyhole?  At least now I know I won't be going it alone.   :shaka:

Part of the reason I ask is because I want to get into kayak fishing and my friend caught me looking at VHF/UHF radios.  That is how we got onto the topic of Ham radio operators.

Anyone here have their ham radio operator license at any level?  A friend and I were talking about it today.  He is working on his  General License.  His brother on the mainland is big time into it is gifting him a setup.  It got me thinking about looking into getting my licenses.

Use my system.

10x cheaper than aquaponics, and same if not better results for 1/10th the work  :shaka:

Where did you get the info for the setup of your system?  The ones I've seen on Youtube and stuff don't look like yours with the buckets and soil.  It must be a lot more productive than the ones I've seen with just the hydroponic grow media.  I'm always looking into trying new gardening ideas especially for smaller spaces like townhouse courtyards.

While trying to break up the monotony of my work today I came across this forum.  Like minded people in Hawaii who are into aquaponics and farming.

I registered for the forum with the same screen name.

Panko style deer backstraps

I never thought of doing that.  Then again my uncle up in Washington makes duck katsu with the birds he takes.  He wraps the breast in plastic wrap and flattens it out with a meat tenderizer.  Breads it with egg wash, flour, and panko then fries to crispy golden goodness.  Now I'm ono for katsu.   :shake:

Kala you selling that shotty?

Not not for sale but not looking to sell either.  If the offer was right I might let it go.  I haven't even shot it since it came back from being chopped down.  Does the old Magnum Firearms place let you shoot shotgun there?

Thanks for the good times everyone!  Next time I won't be so foolish and will bring some cash.  Mac, Rocky, and Bubba enjoy your plants.  :shaka:

I was inspired by Q's purchase from JC so I decided to post my single shot 12ga.  I just got it back this Monday from Red Letter where I had the barrel cut and the gun cerakoted since all the bluing was pretty much gone.  It is a late model Stevens 94 shotgun cut down to 19 inches.

Dear guy who had the single shot shotgun:

Did you sell it or is it still available? If you still have it, bring it because I want it  :shaka:

Sorry Q I bought that bad boy a while back.  Had it tricked out too.  Want me to bring it?  Wifey and I will be there with my PWS rifle and plants for Mac and Bubba.

Everything the founders of our nation set in place is falling to shit!  Our officials spout at the top of their lungs that the USA is a democracy where the majority rules.  That has to be the biggest lie out there.  More and more now day the minorities have a bigger say than the majority.  That in of itself is a big tragedy.  Edster you are 100% correct about this PC society we live in toady.  We can no longer point out the obvious without coming off as a complete ass.

And then too I have no idea which Bible the LGBT people are reading, but the Bible I grew up with and the one I continue to live by today condemned homosexual acts.

The inception of Duck Dynasty as the last bastion of all that is good and wholesome with family values holds true.  All Phil Robertson did was answer a question asked of him in a truthful and matter of fact manner.  It is GQ, the PC Police, and the homos blowing it all out of proportion.

Oil based would be best for longevity, but clean up is a hassle, you've got to use thinner or mineral spirits. Latex is easier to work with, but I think Mac has the right idea, lets ask C&C and see what they say. It would be good if we could lay on a coat of primer too, the paint will last longer, cover better.

I don't think I can get primer out of the contractors.  I will see what paint they have to give.  If it is not what the City wants I will keep it at my union hall, unless someone else wants it for their house?  Color maybe an issue too if they'll only accept a certain color.  Most times the commercial stuff I can get is whitish or cream or some shade there of.  But free is free when it comes to it.  I guess we could tint or mix it to the color we need.

What kind of paint do we need?  Latex or oil based?  I can try and see if any contractors have some leftover 5gal buckets of paint.

KHSC Cleanup Day / Re: question- welding, is it 110V or 220V?
« on: December 09, 2013, 09:05:25 AM »
Yes, of course the usual rules apply, low light=better visability, etc. The only thing that I can think of that would be better is if we have a member with survey equipment and the knowledge to use it. Maybe something C&C could provide?

I got survey equipment to help out with this.  I can borrow a transit and rod from my union training center.  It's not the fancy digital theodolite, but it can make a straight line.  We got a 100' tape measure too and can layout whatever need be.

You posted this video at the right time.  I was teaching a class in Hilo tonight and I showed this video as the guys were settling down before class.  I personally know a handful of the guys that were in the class and they are avid hunters They also know the guy who made the video.  The guy who put the video together is a grad from Waiakea High School.  He went to college on a full ride scholarship for riflery.  In other words da bruddah can shoot.  Anyways the guys were telling me how they do the aerial eradication.  The pilot will spot the herd and chase them down with the helicopter until the sheep and/or goats are literally so tired they can't run anymore.  The pilot then hovers over the tired herd and the shooters shoot straight down on top of the animals.  My friends were saying the shots are all dead on along the spine.  He said the shooters are good and their groupings can fit in a dessert plate.  All shooting is done with 308 semi- autos.  The sad part he said is that they do not always pick up the animals they kill.  He also said its now a lottery system for who gets to butcher the kills because so many people show up now.

I believe in protecting the native Hawaiian plants and animals but I also believe in hunting and the country way of life.  Now days I fish and dive way more than I hunt.  I don't understand why they don't have large tournaments.  For divers they have roi or taape shoots.  Who can bag the most and biggest of those invasive species.  Why not have sheep and goat hunts?  At least you know the animal and meat wouldn't be wasted.

Health, Fitness, and First Aid / Re: Kayaks?
« on: November 25, 2013, 01:48:40 PM »
I've done lots of kayak fishing off my friends' kayaks.  All reef trolling live oama or halalu.  Its really fun.  Even did some bottom fishing out by the Mokes, my friend got seasick on that one.  Anyways I have been looking for a fishing kayak too.  The one I am leaning towards is the 2 man Hobie Mirage Island.  Go down to Windward Boats in Kailua.  Every so often they have demos where you can go try them out.  I like the fact that you can convert it to a sailing trimaran.  Just my 2 cents.  All my hardcore friends use the Scupper Pro.

Here's the link.  I saw this a few years back.  Just never really got the wifey 100% sold on the idea.
