Looking for some .223 soft point ammo to do some testing with.  Have you guys seen any in LGS lately?

Thanks.  I saw they had a sale on 9 mm JHP, but didn't see .223.

check with eugene at HGS

Was going to check with him for that and the Pelican cases.  Just need to find time to check out his shop.

Believe SEC has some in stock as well.  I recall Young Guns has some here and there, but haven't been there recently.

5-10 rounds for testing, but I'd also want the ammo to be readily available locally if I like how they perform in the tests.

Ahh.  I only looked at their posting on 2a.  Just checked their twitter feed.  I'll have to check that out to see if they still have and price.   A little more than I was looking for, but good option.  Thanks!

Thanks.  I picked up some at SEC the other week.  Some brands were pricey, but I was able to find what I wanted (at least to try) for a good price.  Still might check out YG and HGS.

Starting with simple testing between FMJ (193), BTHP (Black Hills 77 gr and some Hornady 55 gr load), and SP (Gold Dot 62 gr and maybe one more).  I know 193 will zip right through a 4x4 and SP will knock the 4x4 off a table.  Really trying to see how the BTHP stuff does, at least to start.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm good on the SP for now.

Now I’m curious what your testing set up looks like with the 4x4.

Simple.  Put sections of 4x4 on a flat surface.  Shoot them and see what happens.  I've done this before with FMJ and SP, but haven't tried with BTHP.  I mostly want to see what the BTHP that I have on hand will do.

Test results

Shot from 16" PSA Freedom Carbine upper at about 7 yards.  Approximately 12" long sections of 4x4.

Federal XM 193 - Went clean through 4x4 (as expected).  Could barely notice the 4x4 move.

Gold Dot 62 gr - Knocked each 4x4 over (as expected).  There was what appeared to be an exit hole on the back side of the 4x4 with some small fragments that passed through.

Hornady "American Gunner" 55 gr HP Match - Knocked each 4x4 over.  Seemed like the 4x4s were knocked over with more energy than the Gold Dots.  This is what I was trying to see what would happen.  The exit holes on the 4x4 seemed to be wider/larger than the Gold Dot and there appears to be an exit hole that looks like a small keyhole.

Black Hills 77 gr OTM - Knocked over one 4x4, but three passed right through.  The one that knocked over the 4x4 hit near where there was a small knot on the 4x4, so guess is that that caused the round to tumble.

Not the most scientific of tests, but I just wanted to see what the different HP rifle rounds in comparison with FMJ and soft points.  I was surprised that the Hornady 55 gr HP ammo appeared to dump that much energy in the 4x4s.  I suspected they would be more like the FMJ.  Then after that, I was surprised that the 77 gr OTM match zipped right through the 4x4s.

Good test and I am happy with how it turned out.  I would eventually love to test on ballistic gel, but that's kinda pricey.

"The rifle is a weapon. Let there be no mistake about that. It is a tool of power, and thus dependent completely upon the moral stature of its user. It is equally useful in securing meat for the table, destroying group enemies on the battlefield, and resisting tyranny. In fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, since a citizenry armed with rifles simply cannot be tyrannized."

I'll try to post some videos later.  Camera man caught my ugly mug in a couple of the videos, so have to edit that $hit out.  Haha
