Legal and Activism / "Stand Your Ground" Is NOT New ...
« on: July 26, 2013, 09:54:10 AM »
Quote
In truth, the Stand Your Ground principle, which holds only that one may fight back without the duty to retreat if attacked, has been restored as the American norm after a short and naïve hiatus. What we are witnessing now is the resurrection of an old and valuable principle. As Andrew Branca of Legal Insurrection notes, the first explicit reference to the notion comes not in 2005 with the passage of Florida’s now-infamous law, but instead in the case of Runyon v. State, all the way back in 1877.

...

By 1980, in all but a few states, the attacked were required to retreat, and to justify themselves to a jury if they did not. The principle appeared to be dead.

Rare are the instances of a people clawing back their autonomy from a growing government. But here is one such case. The abject failure of weaker crime initiatives in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s ushered in a remarkable turnabout during which the same forces that led to more permissive gun laws also led to pointed criticism of “duty to retreat” imperatives, resulting in “Castle Doctrine” policies, which apply inside the home, as well as to Stand Your Ground provisions, which apply everywhere. In the 1970s, even Texans had tamed themselves, officially adding retreat requirements to their legal frameworks.

Case Against Student Who Wore NRA T-Shirt to School Dismissed

On June 27th, in a positive resolution to a case which has captured the attention of advocates for First and Second Amendment rights, the case against 14-year-old Logan Middle School Honor Student Jared Marcum of Logan, W.V., was dismissed with prejudice. Marcum had been charged with obstructing an officer following an incident stemming from a Logan Middle School faculty member's reaction to Marcum wearing to school an NRA t-shirt featuring the words "Protect Your Right" and an image of a semiautomatic rifle. The charge against Jared carried a possible sentence of incarceration.

Passionate and fierce. Rep. Gowdy (R-S.C.) spoke for all Americans. Rep. Gowdy spoke For the Women in the real way, not the Obama way. Rep. Gowdy cares for the most vulnerable in the real way. Rep. Gowdy delivered  a boom-worthy statement blasting the IRS that will be, and should be, remembered for a long time to come. Everyone in America needs to see this indeed.

The only silver lining in this story is that the victim lived ... and perhaps others may heed this warning and finally arm themselves!

“Uh, I don’t have anybody to send out there,” the 911 dispatcher told the woman. “You know, obviously, if he comes inside the residence and assaults you, can you ask him to go away? Do you know if he’s intoxicated or anything?”   :wtf:

The woman told the dispatcher that Bellah previously attacked her and left her hospitalized a few weeks prior to the latest incident. The dispatcher stayed on the phone with the woman for more than 10 minutes before the sexual assault took place.
....

“There isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t have another victim,” Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilberson told Oregon Public Radio. “If you don’t pay the bill, you don’t get the service.”

The sheriff’s department had to cut 23 deputies and the entire major crimes unit after it lost a multi-million dollar federal subsidy, according to Oregon Public Radio. There are now only six deputies left.

Beretta Leaving Maryland After Gov. Mandates Strict Gun Control Laws

Quote
One thing you can say with absolute certainty about the big gun manufacturers is that, unlike many other American companies, they stand by their principles and are as good as their word. Beretta, which is the world’s oldest firearms manufacturer, promised that, if Maryland passed its strict (and almost certainly ineffectual) post-Sandy Hook gun control laws, Beretta would pack its bags and leave the state.

On Friday, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley signed into law the state’s comprehensive new gun control laws. The new laws, the stated purpose of which is to “save lives,” ban some “assault weapons” (whatever the heck gun grabbers think those imaginary weapons are), limits magazine capacity to ten rounds, and requires mandatory fingerprinting for gun purchase.

The first two prohibitions prove definitely that Maryland has no interest in “saving lives.” If it did, it would have paid attention to the fact that the Department of Justice has issued a report conceding that crime goes down when legal gun ownership goes up. Moreover, there’s no evidence that an arbitrary ten-round limit benefits anyone but the bad guys.

Off Topic / Do you post gun pics with the Serial Number??
« on: May 17, 2013, 04:57:58 PM »
Hi,

I was discussing with another forum member/friend the possible reasons why some would blot out the serial numbers of guns they post online.  As I thought about the potential for misuse and did some Googling (yeah, it's a verb now!), I discovered some things:

(1)  One argument for blotting serials:  scammers using the pics for creating gun auction/for sale ads.   Detailed ads with serials are more believable for buyers.  The buyers can also run a check to see if the firearm was reported stolen.

(2)  Another:  someone might try to use your firearms information for insurance fraud.  Not all places register all guns.  Your firearm could be listed in a fire or theft claim for payment.  Unless there is a need, Law Enforcement may never let you know your firearm was reported lost or stolen.

(3)  someone might think they are doing a good thing getting guns confiscated by reporting your gun as stolen from them.  In Hawaii, not much chance unless the gun was never registered.

(4)  The main argument AGAINST blotting out serials was "you're paranoid!  I've never heard of anyone ever doing any of this!"

As I said, I did some research.  This is from 2011.  I hope this information helps someone else:

In March, PoliceOne conducted the most comprehensive survey ever of American law enforcement officers’ opinions on the topic gripping the nation's attention in recent weeks: gun control.

More than 15,000 verified law enforcement professionals took part in the survey, which aimed to bring together the thoughts and opinions of the only professional group devoted to limiting and defeating gun violence as part of their sworn responsibility.

This is a great form on Ruger's website to notify your government how you feel about the current gun control ban issues.

Fill it in, submit it, and add your "signature".  It forwards your "personalized" message to every one of your elected representatives based on the home address you give.
