General Discussion / Re: UnitedHealthcare CEO assassinated
« on: December 08, 2024, 04:47:12 PM »
This video claims that the shooter was an amateur. It opens up a can of worms as far as how many unanswered questions remain.

The victim may not be CEO Thompson, for all we know. Did his wife ID the body? Why would someone stage something as crazy as this idea? This is 'murica, that's why.
The shooter may or may not be discovered for weeks. Many in the public may even hide him while the manhunt goes on.
How many states allow the shooter to practice on a range using a handgun with a suppressor attached? If he practiced on a private lot, that would be a different story, but no range owner has come forth to id the guy.

There are some ordinances being considered that probably ban open carry or firing in a public space. I do not know if KHSC even has a lane for air rifles, since the range re-opened,

$500 dolla fine, braddah, for open carry.

This store is located in Wahiawa, and yelp says that it is currently closed.

Has any member ever used their shooting range?

Second question, where can an airgun owner try out this rifle in Oahu?

After 6 months, why is this news drawing the attention of the Wall Street Journal today?

https://www.wsj.com/politics/national-security/foreign-purchase-of-u-s-ammo-maker-sparks-national-security-battle-db31490d

Sorry for the pay-walled link, but this is a Rupert Murdoch owned company. In the capitalist world, ammo is a commodity, and like a lot of other products, it gets outsourced to foreign manufacturers. We probably agree that this is a national security issue, but why didn't Mike Johnson take care of it with hearings? The National Police Officers Organization and many other groups are against the takeover. Whose pockets are being lined to get the domestic business possibly gutted?
I found a more recent article (about a month old) that is not pay-walled-
https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/vista-outdoor-urges-mnc-capital-increase-offer-price-3-bln-bid-2024-04-22/
Since VSTO is still trading this morning, I hope there is a deal looming that would protect U.S. interests.

That lady looks cool. Wish we had more practical women like her on the islands. Life skills for surviving in the wild (including cold weather) are vital. Until an individual or family is confronted with a real life or death situation, they really do not have the proper perspective or skills to make it through the hard times. Imagine if we lost power for a week on the most populated island? Most residents would go bonkers, maybe raiding what remains at Costco.
One of the things we need to be wary about is where to store food. There seems to be a surge in the ant population here in Hawaii.
https://americanpest.net/blog/ant-populations-are-about-to-explode/
These little critters can get into almost anything. Due to higher rainfall, even the Opala recycle bins attract large populations of ants.
Watertight ammo crates seem to block entry by ants looking for crackers and other semi-dry foods. The most effective blocking "insecticide" is no longer sold anywhere in the US.

What are the alternatives? In a SHTF crisis, pest control could become a serious problem not too many people are prepared for.

Very poor acknowledgement to one of the last big power outages on Oahu:

https://x.com/HwnElectric/status/1792104184545738902

From a cursory read, it appears to have started in Mililani at around 11:15 PM Saturday May 18, 2024. It hit my neighborhood around midnight. My security cam shows a black hole ending at 3:43 AM on Sunday. I estimate 100K customers experienced the blackout, based on the fact that it struck town. Uganda has a better power grid. As usual, the HECO employees monitoring X (Twitter) posted few updates before and after the outage.

Anyone have ideas on how to set up a hospital grade backup power system? It needs to support either a freezer or refrigerator for several days. MRE and dry foods are only a partial solution. Real men like pizza, frozen or refrigerated. Cold beer is a must. Is dry ice (CO2) viable? I think Thermoelectric refrigerators can work at 12 V, but what's hospital grade?

Tin foil or not, someone needs to archive all the property records in the damaged areas. I saw a fly-by video on youtube, but the records tell the true story. Which properties are fee simple, which are leasehold, and how many are owned by shady trusts? Document the assessed values, before and after. What are the mineral rights? We are witnessing an $8 billion dollar loss, which will get worse when inflation, insurance and taxes destroy homeowners across all islands. HECO and Maui Electric are going to sock us with infrastructure rate boosts. We pay for their dumb mistakes, and they make more money.

Lots of suspicious causes of the fire, including the pre and aftermath. Not surprising we bungle a lot things, as humans. The NY Times and other sources generated a "list" of causes. This is a non firewalled version of the article:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/development-tourism-and-climate-change-how-humans-made-mauis-catastrophic-wildfires-worse-215135003.html

It is a shame they blamed homeless people for cooking outdoors. The "blame" game has no boundaries.

I will give you the inner city solution to the problem. Build concrete or brick housing projects in areas which are susceptible to fires. I lived in one of these buildings for six years, and no amount of drug dealing, smoking, indoor BBQ'ing could destroy the buildings. Just bring in stone masons from da mainland, and we could have a Cabrini Green complex built on the shores of Maui in one year flat. Cabrini Green (Chicago) and the housing projects in NYC were built 100x better than any condo in Hawaii. For a million bucks, all you get is a shack in HI.

They should now convene a panel of experts to assess what went wrong. Classic case in point was the Challenger space shuttle disaster. Richard Feynman was on that panel. Take this with a grain of salt. Like the Kennedy assassination, the real causes of any catastrophe are never fully fleshed out.

Here's da problem with suicide by gun. It is often not the real cause of death of a person. It can be a staged act, when a wife rigs up ("arranges") the death of her husband.

There was a "death by suicide" of a cop on a neighbor island. Like a lot of acts, it was covered up by local authorities.

On the mainland, we have the case of a "texting suicide" caused by a nasty woman messing with the mind of her boyfriend. He died by carbon monoxide poisoning. She was convicted of manslaughter. Do we ban cars, using CDC reasoning?

For the homeowners who have to build a new home over the land that once held their own home, please choose your builder carefully.

Nothing is guaranteed, but buffers, roofs, and fire resistant double walled materials should help. Battery operated smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are critical. This state (HI) is full of unqualified, shoddy contractors. As bad as the bandits who work out of Florida. My neighbor's new pool leaked, and the contractor had to be called back three times. Find out who works for Oprah or Jason Mamoa. Use da best.

Political Discussion / Re: climate change caused Maui fires?
« on: August 13, 2023, 08:49:49 AM »
I theorize that the bad building codes allowed the flames to spread like wildfire. Being near the ocean, it would not be surprising if acetone and other accelerants were present in some homes. During the demolition process, FEMA should devote some funds to researching better ways to protect neighborhoods from massive, uncontrolled destruction. There are third world countries with better fire control / safety regulations on their books. State Farm, which is one of the biggest insurers in Hawaii, will probably put the hammer down on homeowners. Their underwriters are probably going to force new customers to pay for fire assessments on their homes. If the property does not meet current codes, the owner will have to self-insure. We have only to look at what insurance companies have done in Florida. The victims of any disaster are never confined to just the damaged community.

Political Discussion / Re: Yes, Civil Asset Forfeiture is Real
« on: August 13, 2023, 08:34:05 AM »
Huge issue. Both state and federal governments think they're entitled to every cent you've earned, and probably already paid taxes on. Citizens who keep assets in cash or precious metals are right to be scared about the collapse of our banking system, but the government does not want you to protect yourself by remaining liquid. When I worked in Arizona, it was likely that most paper cash was tainted by drug residue, and anytime you were stopped by CBP, a dog could sniff it out, if the agent got too nosey. But officer, "I carry a large amount of money to gamble at the nearby casinos." Sorry, buddy, but you look like a drug dealer. We're radioing highway patrol.
I understand that in some of Lehto's videos, money was seized from safe deposit boxes. There goes that idea for keeping your money in a safe place.
Moral of this story: buy a bloodhound who can sniff out drug money, and exchange bad bills at your local bank. You're innocent, but the money you get at a club may not be clean. Don't comingle new money with old money, until you verify that the new stash is clean.

Three tings u need: 45 automatic handgun, shotgun, and plenty of ammo (preferably in a mag).

The fourth thing you need to find is inside the apartment building. She's a blonde.

This is a pickle. Do I keep docs like passports, social cards, birth certs, etc...in my BOB?

Unless you need to use your passport for foreign travel, keep it in a safe deposit box in a reputable bank, together with an Ironkey USB drive that contains your important digital files. If a house burns down completely, how do you reconstruct your tax returns, receipts, etc.? Not easy. This piece of advice was given to me by an FBI agent. Also important to keep a small laptop and backup cell phone in your bug out bag.

The electrical infrastructure on Oahu is horrible. Bad enough that we suffer from outages periodically, but in a real disaster situation, the electric company will probably be one of the causes of your home burning down.

The situation in West Maui could be getting worse with looters taking advantage of the situation.

There was a story on yahoo about a painter (Ariel Quiroz) who used a sprinkler to wet down his house on Tuesday morning. This could be an urban legend that may be real.

With all the old people in the state, why are there no Senior competitions? Are organizers afraid of old people being unable to get off a mat, or falling asleep during the match?

Is there such a thing as an affordable EV in the market today? Next year, Honda should bring out its offering. Chevy has the Bolt, and I believe GM will allow credits earned by using GM-branded charge cards can be applied to this car, as well as Corvettes.

For those like CMO, what are some of the surprise costs of owning an EV? This article cites faster tire wear, and higher collision insurance costs.

CMO, I can now disclose top secret information about the mission of the Titan. It was to extract the remains of writer, Jacques Futrelle, who died aboard the Titanic. Futrelle wrote the famous Thinking Machine mystery series, anticipating the rise of men with brilliant minds, rivaling today's thinking engine, ChatGPT.

His bio can be researched here:

https://venetianvase.co.uk/2011/01/18/the-remarkable-life-and-mysterious-heritage-of-jacques-futrelle/

Quote
On the written page, Jacques Futrelle could devise the most ingenious of “impossible escapes.” On the tragic night of April 14, 1912, however, the celebrated author of “The Problem of Cell 13,” refused his only chance to escape the sinking Titanic.

New technology for rebirthing dead people from DNA samples has been discovered in the ship that landed in Area 51. Aliens realized that the earth was going to hell in a handbasket, and did not want the planet that gave birth to Helen of Troy, Ludwig von Beethoven, and Albert Einstein to undergo devolution back to the pre-paleolithic era. I told them this was not possible, and crunch went the Titan sub.

Who knew that Merrick Garland was the masked crusader? This video from four months ago hinted at the government's zeal in prosecuting those who broke laws concerning classified documents.

Trump should have paid $10,000 for every document he took, saying he was sowwy (sic). The sitting president would have pardoned DJT, and Trumpy would have ridden off into the sunset, on a Clydesdale, the only horse big enough to carry a monument to Big Macs.
