Off Topic / Good thing there's nobody here like this

Contrarian:

Someone who suffers from a cognitive bias known as reactance.

Reactance occurs when a person feels that someone is trying to limit their choices.
That reactance causes the person to adopt a view that's contrary to what the group
thinks.

It's not a good or bad trait, but it does make cooperation difficult within the group
as insignificant issues often become time-wasting arguments for no reason other
than to feed a need to be contrarian.

Talk about misinformation!

Quote
SUNNY HOSTIN: Can I say something?

Because, you know, they keep on talking about criminals and immigrants
being criminals. And I just want people to understand what the facts are
and the stats are, is that undocumented immigrants are much less likely to
have committed crimes than American citizens. American citizens commit
more crimes than anyone who is undocumented.

I also want to make the point that an undocumented immigrant is not a
criminal because he or she is undocumented. That is a civil offense. So to
call people illegal is in and of itself, I think xenophobic and racist.

And incorrect.
https://townhall.com//tipsheet/mattvespa/2025/01/29/the-views-sunny-hostin-lobs-another-grenade-of-pure-stupidity-regarding-illegal-aliens-n2651307

Statistically, 100% of undocumented immigrants have committed a crime compared to less than 100% of US citizens.  So, that's a lie.

Being an undocumented immigrant/alien is NOT a civil infraction.  it's a federal crime.  Members of Congress have tried to push this lie, and they were quickly put in their place.

Lastly, how do we know if someone in the country illegally commits crimes other than being here illegally?  Most times they live off the radar in communities that don't report crimes to the police because the victims are sometimes illegal aliens, too.  This is a red herring, as the group in question should not be here in the first place whether or not they commit more crimes, pay taxes, mow lawns or clean motels.  Rationalizing foreigners entering the US illegally is not a solution.

Imagine if Trump or any Republican said this .....

Quote
"Right now, we're going to keep focus on the need to look out for
everyday New Yorkers and everyday Americans who are under
assault by an extreme MAGA Republican agenda that is trying
to cut taxes for billionaires, donors, and wealthy corporations and
then stick New Yorkers and working-class Americans across the
country with the bill," Jeffries said.

"That's not acceptable. We are going to fight it legislatively. We
are going to fight it in the courts. We're going to fight it in the
streets
."
https://www.foxnews.com/media/hakeem-jeffries-call-fight-trump-agenda-in-streets-sparks-backlash

I recall every time Trump used the word 'fight" the Left said he was inciting violence, even though he never did.

What Jeffries said is unambiguous.  You don't list "legislatively" and "in the courts" and then add "in the streets" unless you intended to call for violence 'in the streets."

My guess is he'll say he meant protesting, but we all know what he meant, and we also know how peaceful protests by the Left are.

Aren't these the same Democrats who preach to the GOP about toning down the rhetoric when people are injured and killed over politics?

Trump issued an executive order to repeal a previous executive order in effect stopping all DEI hiring practices in the Federal Government.

The order says hiring will be based on merit.  No longer will gender, race, skin color, sexual habits, or other traits or lifestyles be used to give groups preferential treatment.  In other words, they can no longer discriminate against White heterosexual men.

The Left is pushing the false narrative that this action repeals the 1965 Civil Rights Act.  Some on TikTok pretend it's the 1965 Civil Rights "Order," which I guess is their attempt to not lie about the law itself, so they made up a new title that applies to no existing law or order.  Maybe it was too easy to call out their lies that Trump repealed a law which only Congress has the power to do?  So, they defused that low-hanging fruit by making even more crap up.

Based on some social media posts from the Democrat Leftists, they only need to be told this was what happened to believe it.  They made dozens of posts ranting and spewing the lies in emotion-drenched "told you so!" anti-Trump hysterical videos.

These people vote Democrat and will never be convinced to vote otherwise until the country is destroyed.  It'll be too late to say to them, "Told you so."

Why would anyone, even a Cop, be stupid enough to unholster a gun that's not a threat during a traffic stop?

A holstered firearm is not a threat to anyone's safety.

Officer body camera  footage of the incident is included in this video.

The officer who caused the discharge is a female.

Off Topic / Conviction, starring Hilary Swank
« on: January 21, 2025, 11:18:13 PM »
Good movie based on a true story.  Hilary Swank co-produced and starred with Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver, and other familiar actors.

Hilary played the sister of a man wrongfully sentenced to life for murder and armed robbery.  She tried to live a normal life , then decided to pass her GED, work for an undergrad degree & law degree, and then pass the state bar exam -- all so she could help her brother get out of prison

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1244754/

Quote
The film is based on the true story of Betty Anne Waters (Hillary Swank), a
single mother who works tirelessly to free her wrongfully convicted brother,
Kenny. The story unfolds in flashbacks, and the film opens with the scene
of the brutal 1980 murder of Katharina Brow in Massachusetts. We soon
see that, in many ways, Betty Anne's life revolves around her brother, who
is now in jail for the murder. Despite Kenny's knack for getting in trouble,
they have always been close.

Two years after his release as a suspect in the 1980 murder of Katharina
Brow in Ayer, Massachusetts, based on newly discovered evidence from
two witnesses, Kenny is arrested, and he is tried. The evidence presented
at Kenny's trial was entirely circumstantial. In 1983, Kenny was convicted
of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility
of parole. The three main witnesses against him are Sergeant Nancy Taylor
(Melissa Leo) from the local police department, his ex-wife, Brenda (Clea
DuVall), and his ex-girlfriend, Roseanna (Juliette Lewis).

Saw where he announced the ceremony will be held indoors due to "dangerously cold temperatures" expected Monday.

I'm wondering if the weather is the result of Democrats predicting "it'll be a cold day in Hell before Trump gets reelected!"

I guess I was wrong when I posted how difficult it is to pass a Constitutional Amendment.  Looks like you just need a president willing to declare it so.

Statement from President Joe Biden
on the Equal Rights Amendment

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2025/01/17/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-the-equal-rights-amendment/

Well, NO!

Quote
The issue has long been the subject of legal controversy. In 2020,
the national archivist — who is charged with making constitutional
amendments official — declined to certify the amendment, citing an
opinion from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel. The
department said it considered the ERA to be expired after a 1982
ratification deadline was missed. In 2022, the Office of Legal Counsel
released an opinion affirming that 2020 decision.
......
Last month, Shogan reiterated that Congress and the courts would
need to take further action to lift the deadline for the amendment to
be ratified — arguing that the Archives could not legally certify and
publish the ERA.

While Biden's statement doesn't put the ERA into the Constitution, it
does raise new legal questions in the ERA push, says Martha Davis,
professor at Northeastern University School of Law.

This is how dictators and tyrants act.  Ignore the actual law -- the law is whatever the President says it is.

Congress passed a law to ban TikTok in the US unless the Chinese-owned company transfers ownership to a US-based owner.

The deadline is this Sunday, Jan 19 -- coincidentally the day before the inauguration.

Fact #1 -- Biden can extend the deadline up to an additional 90 days.

Fact #2 -- The "ban" does not block TikTok traffic from US users.  It only blocks the app from being distributed on Apple and Google App servers.  If you already have it installed on your device/s, the ban is meaningless.

Fact #3 -- Even though the law only affects downloading the client app, TikTok itself is warning they are planning to drop all US users from the platform.  The company said users can do their own downloads to preserve their content, and the company will also back up user accounts in the event the law is reversed and TikTok continues distributing the client app as before.  They say resuming service after being turned off should be relatively quick if allowed to do so.

Fact #4 -- The Supreme Court unanimously ruled today, Jan 17th, to uphold the law/ban.

Fact #5 -- Trump may decide to implement the extension clause the day after the ban begins, so it's doubtful anyone who took that gamble would be punished (fined) by keeping the app available on their app store servers.  Fines can be forgiven by the Executive branch.

The bottom line:  the law is not going to hurt current TikTokkers, but the TikTok Company may hurt creators and consumers in order to gin up public support for repealing the ban entirely.

That's what I've gleaned from several sources.  This whole mess is a lot more complicated (and ineffective) than it ought to be.

100% tariff on electric vehicles made in China?  How is that not a bad thing?

Maybe it's only bad if Trump were to do it.

5 takeaways from Biden's tariff hikes

President Biden has quadrupled tariffs on electric vehicles from China —
from 25% to an eye-watering 100% — in a move designed to bolster U.S.
jobs and manufacturing.

"I'm determined that the future of electric vehicles be made in America by
union workers. Period," Biden said on Tuesday.

So, Biden admits this is the deal his administration worked up last Spring.

Why did it take until mid-Winter for Israel and HAMAS to agree to it?  What, if anything. changed recently?

How did Biden's people not announce the deal until after Trump posted about it on social media?

No, this is not a video of a duck!

i've been using DuckDuckGo as my search engine for a very long time.  Recently I downloaded the DuckDuckGo browser for my devices.

One of the features in the browser you can enable is called Duck Video.  It removes the Google/YT ads from videos you watch without paying the extortion fee YT demands from you for the same ad removal.

Thought I'd share that.

Just go to the DuckDuckGo.com downloads and install the browser, then open the browser settings and turn on Duck Video.

The more i listened, the more it started to sound like a classic catch-22 which favors the consumer for a change.

If an amusement park requires the parent to sign a waiver of responsibility for their minor child, and if the child is injured at the park, the child still has the legal right to sue the park.  Parents cannot legally waive their child's rights, including the right to sue for damages.

Some states recognized this loophole in the waivers being used to protect businesses engaging in above-average risk of death or injury.  So, they decided the parents can sign an agreement to indemnify the business, meaning the parents are able to be held liable for their own child's injuries.

The courts now ruled parents indemnifying a business is nothing more than a legal work-around that does the same thing as the waiver which means the parents are still saying the child can't sue the business.

This is related to the common understanding that minors cannot be held to a contract they sign.  17 year olds have purchased vehicles from used car dealers and forced the dealers to give them a refund when the car dies.  The dealers should have recognized the contract was unenforceable, but they either did not know that themselves, or they relied on the customer's ignorance of the law.

Transgender woman stabs New York
letter carrier to death over sandwich

Quote
A transgender woman with a history of violence is accused of fatally
stabbing a postal worker in New York City on Thursday after being
cut in line for lunch.

Police say Jaia Cruz had been arrested at least five times before she
allegedly gutted Ray Hodges, 36, with a knife after he cut her in line
at a Harlem deli, the New York Post reported.

Cruz, 24, threatened to slash someone with a box cutter in July 2020
and then resisted when officers came to arrest her, the Post reported.
Two weeks later, Cruz and an accomplice were arrested for allegedly
using knives to steal a man’s phone and wallet.

Deli workers told ABC News 7 the dispute arose over a sandwich and
who had ordered first. One worker said he tried to intervene but was
unable to stop the violence.

Cruz has been charged with second-degree murder, media reported.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Authorities are investigating how a passenger
without a ticket got onto a Delta Air Lines flight bound for Honolulu Christmas Eve.

According to Delta Air, the traveler boarded flight 487 from Seattle to Honolulu, on
an Airbus A321neo aircraft.

The traveler has not been identified, but the airlines confirmed the person was
discovered during the taxi out at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Tuesday.

The flight returned to the gate, where the person was removed and arrested. The
Transportation Security Administration conducted additional security checks, including
customer rescreening.

The flight was delayed 2 hours and 15 minutes and continued on to Honolulu,
the airline said.

An Army vet driving a pickup truck carrying explosive devices collided with New Year's Eve partiers.

An Army veteran driving a pickup truck that bore the flag of the Islamic State
group wrought carnage on New Orleans’ raucous New Year’s celebration,
killing at least 10 people as he steered around a police blockade and slammed
into revelers before being shot dead by police.

The FBI said it is investigating the attack early Wednesday in the city’s famed
French Quarter as a terrorist act and does not believe the driver acted alone.
Investigators found multiple improvised explosive devices, including two pipe
bombs that were concealed within coolers and wired for remote detonation
