Why not both?

18" Tramontina machete cut down to 14-15" in a golok pattern
Some type of fixed blade knife
Norse or Chinese pattern style hatchet.
I was thinking having the machete there was no need of a ax(hatchet)-make more sense having both.thanks. :shaka:

I've got a Benchmade Nimravus 141 Tanto knife and a Spax-16 in my BOB as my main "go-to's".

Of course I've got axes, machete's and other knives but when it comes to my first choices to run with it's those two and I'm pretty content with them so far!

- Axe if you're going jungle
- Wreckingbar / crowbar if you're going urban

+ a machete for all around

I agree.  depends on where you are bugging out to, or how long you will be bugged out.

to me bugging out is different than SHTF.
if i am doing an overnight or short time period bugout, I wont bring much.  only what will fit in 1-2 bags.
I think an axe or machete is too large for just a short bug out.
but if you plan to be bugged out for a while and are in the woods or brush filled area, and axe or machete would be good.

my all purpose knife/machete/gurkha is this Blackjack Marauder that I got back in 1985
I've used it for many hikes and camping as an all purpose bushwhaker, and it has more than held its own in the field
for a 30 year old knife, it has very little wear on it.

This one should be sufficient

You can baton the wood to chop it like an axe.

Having too heavy a BOB means you can't actually bug out when the tsunami hits. You need to carry maybe two quarts of water too.

Always have a big fixed blade on your pack and a decent sized folder on your person.   As far as chop chop for the woods or urban ya know I've spent a sh#t ton on all kinds of blades axes and hawks and it's very hard to beat a good ole USGI Machete, period. Affordable, proven, durable, easy to sharpen.  I don't baby my blades but it still don't feel good to destroy an expensive one on rocks or something.  The USGI (and the bayonets for that matter) is made for such abuse and to keep going.  I reprofile the handles to fit my hand better.  Add lanyard. Tape or bungee on small packs to the sheath like for first aid or survival stuff.  You can put different grinds on different spots on the blade like very narrow near the handle for fine work / shaving (wood or your face if you can handle), jimping or saw blade for the spine, etc.  I forget what that grind technique is called but it works.  I also like leaf shaped blades a lot for Hawai'i grass cutting.  Fast action and also has nice pointy end for social work.

These are great and still great price you can buy a bunch to hand out if needed  ;)
