General Discussion / Re: Comms

All good points!

Would add to that in addition to setting a budget is that it is important to actually use your gear. Integrate it into general usage. Definitely don’t buy a $1000 radio and never use it and think you’re set.

If you get the $20 baofeng, use the crap out of it. If/when you upgrade to a better radio then you have handout radios should you need

Should identify your specific needs/purposes first.
• Who are you trying to communicate with and where are they located (can you even have line of sight radio contact)

Then it’s important to understand several things:
• difference between VHF and UHF
• difference between Simplex and Duplex
• look at the band plan and assigned frequencies (FRS, GMRS, HAM, etc)
• legalities and licensing requirements

Remember 99% of people their go to primary comms is a $1000+ smart phone. If cell phones don’t work, are you willing to have a $20 radio as a back up? Baofengs are definitely a good entry point with front face programming and being dual band (vhf/uhf) but you get what you pay for (think $20 phone vs $1000 phone).

Yup, I mentioned that and the officer told me that I need to read the instructions better so I showed them on my phone what the website requirements are and the officer said to come back when I have the hard copies of my registrations…so I went next door to ask them for copies and came back lol.

The vibe we got today was that they’re not happy about the additional workload from CCW applications and they’re going to take it out on us.

Today I needed the following:
• CCW permit app
• HARD COPY of the handgun you will be carrying (if you want to have options to carry you’ll need to fill out a separate CCW app for EACH handgun plus a hard copy of the registration for each). FYI they will be keeping that copy as part of your “packet”
• Firearm Application/Questionaire
• Medical Information Waiver
• Mental Health Waiver
• (2) Passport photos (preferably in an envelope of some sort)

You can pre fill all the forms from online and wait to sign them until directed at the window

General Discussion / Re: Flying with firearms (Hawaiian)

Their policy is to keep them in your carry-on…however they’re packaged/stored. That being said, I’ve never taken the batteries out of any of my lights/optics when flying.

If you want to be on the safe side, take them out and put them in a ziplock in your carry-on.

The ones that caused the fires were almost always e-cigs, laptops, or cellphones.

Hawaiian doesn’t allow ammo to be stored in mags even though TSA and other airlines do. Ammo must be stored in original packaging (boxes, not loose) or in a plastic container that keeps the rounds from touching each other.

I tried to fly with ammo in mags once and I had to turn over the ammo to the airport police and they had to fill out a report.

Technically any lithium ion batteries need to be carried in your carry-on due to fire hazards. Hawaiian and a couple flights where lithium ion batteries exploded in the cargo causing an internal fire…that being said, I’ve never taken out the batteries from the lights/optics when flying.

I bought a couple boxes of 9mm from them. I ordered online then I received a text message from them on when the ammo would available for pick up. They brought the ammo downstairs so I didn’t have to find parking.

Strategies and Tactics / NRA Pistol Instructor Course

Anyone offering or willing to offer the NRA Pistol Instructor Course locally? I’m currently planning on taking it on the mainland but I would rather give my money to and support a local 2A member.

The FB Post uses the words “ATTEMPTS TO BLOW UP” while the actual article states he was arrested with a Molotov Cocktail and a lighter...

Aren’t Molotovs classified as INCENDIARY not Explosive?

General Discussion / Re: Traveling on Hawaiian with Firearms
« on: March 18, 2019, 10:14:17 AM »
Most of the customer service agents have little to no experience with firearms outside of what the scope of their job is at Hawaiian. Most times they don’t even look inside my bag, just ask me if it’s locked and unloaded. I fly weekly on Hawaiian and check firearms every time. I always travel with ammo in original packaging (box) or a plastic ammo box from Cabelas and I keep that in the same locked case that my firearm is in. I used to just leave it in the mags before I saw their updated policy recently but even before then I’ve never had an issue flying out of HNL.

Honestly, the agents barely look inside your case and rarely even ask me to open the case to verify the contents and whether the firearm is unloaded. As long as you sign the Firearms Declaration Tag and are within TSA Standards for traveling with a firearm they really won’t give you any hassle.

The ONLY place that I’ve has an issue with ammo being in the same case/suitcase is at JFK where the NY Port Authority requires you to keep ammo in a separate suitcase from your firearm and a Port Authority officer actually comes to the counter and physically checks everything before you lock it >:D

The AFT Bag Tag is required on Hawaiian now because of their new Airbus 321NEO aircraft. The forward cargo area can get pretty hot and they don’t want any ammo to go off.

Ammo has to be in original box/container or a container designed specifically for ammo. Main thing that the airlines are concerned with is that ammo isn't "loose" while in cargo so no loose ammo in a ziplock bag, etc.

Just be careful if you're "transiting" through JFK because NY Port Authority will give you tons of grief if you have ammo in the same suitcase as the container with the firearm. Speaking from personal experience,

You can use any type of suitcase as long as the container that the firearm is in is a "locked, hard-sided container". I travel frequently with my firearms and have used everything from Pelican cases to small metal safes that I keep inside my suitcase. Just make sure that it is unloaded, ammo is NOT inside the same container as the firearm, and declared to the ticket agent. If you're flying on Hawaiian you'll need to stand in line at the Customer Service counter so make sure you give yourself enough time for that line and the TSA line.

For most of the stores you can purchase long guns no problem. Handguns have to be transferred through an FFL.
