I shoot better with a dot but I don't trust electronic or fancy stuff too much.

Funny you should post this, as I just recently bought a Steiner MPS for of all things ….. my SW 610 (10mm)!

Why?  Well, at 65, my eyes have become sufficiently restricted with respect to near focus that I feel I can no longer be confident that the sight image on the target is correct for where I want the bullet to go on a gun with a longer sight radius - especially in anything less than perfect lighting.

Have no problem on a 2 inch barrel.

So, as someone with a CCP, it was entirely a safety decision:  If I have to fire, the target has to be what stops the bullet.

I used a bore sight at home, took it to the range, and put 4 through the same hole at 10 yards.  The other two were an inch away and almost the same hole, so I’m a believer.

The gun doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would - you may disagree

Also, I believe training thoughtfully with a red dot will improve my ability to index well with my other revolvers - at least that’s what I’m working for.

I have had a dot now for a while and besides making the gun bigger and heavier I do like it. I don't think it makes me a better shot at close range but I do feel that I can be more accurate at further distances.

The latter point is a big thing -  the value of faith in your ability to succeed when things are more difficult, and you are under stress, cannot be overestimated.

Especially when the real world is nothing like the controlled conditions of the range where we train.

I will have to off-body carry mine though, as I can’t find a practical concealed carry holster for my hunk of machinery

I just imagine the worst case type of shot, a hostage taker and the only thing I have to hit is the head. At 15-25 yards with a red dot I would have way more confidence that I wouldn't hit the hostage. With chunky Glock iron sights I would be scared to take that shot even though on paper I could reliably hit such a target.

They invented co-witnessing sights for a reason.  You can quickly verify by sight if the two types are in alignment.

If the co witnessing view is not aligned, then there's a big question for you.  Is it the red dot that's not zeroed or is it the iron sight (bumped it or a screw came loose, etc).

if you trust the iron sights more, then ignore the red dot.  if you remember cracking the front sight on the pavement when you fumbled it trying to clear your holster, then maybe neither is accurate.

Maybe you should practice with no sights visible and use a 7-15 yard distance.  15-25 is unrealistic to attempt a headshot with a handgun under pressure.

I guarantee you you'll be able to hit the target where you want without really using the sights.  I was doing that in IPSC timed exercises. Pull, point, fire.  You were so close, you'd have to really try to miss, or be in such a hurry that the sights won't help anyway.

In Front Sight Defensive Handgun training, we taped the silhouette of the hostage in front of the bad guy's head with just a couple of inches visible around the hostage.  I hit all 3 rounds in the right area without touching the hostage.  That was at 10', and i don't actually remember taking a time to get a perfect sight picture.

i'm sure the bad guy is going to be patient while you line up the shot that's meant to kill him.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Do they let you qualify with a dot at recall?
