Are you fed up with waiting for the Police Chief to do his job?
Are you angry about the delays in getting your concealed carry licenses?
Do you want to exercise your constitutional right but city employees are stoping you?
Call the Mayors office at 808-768-4141 and let him know that the Attorney General has advised the Police Chiefs to issue permits and that you would like him to instruct his employees to do their job, honor their oath and start issuing carry licenses to law abiding citizens immediately.

General Discussion / Christmas At Dire's!
« on: December 23, 2021, 10:37:27 PM »
I thought I'd share my pleasure with you guy over what I got this Christmas.  Here's the list:

UTG Leapers  1" Riser for my Bushnell TRS-25
Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9 Rimfire MOA scope
Leupold 1" medium rings
Leupold Backcountry 10/22 weaver/1913 rail
Sig Saur Romeo 5 red dot
UTG Super Slim Front and Rear Flip up sights
PSA .22LR Upper 16" Barrel
PSA MOE complete lower (Thankyou Dave at Danger Close Tactical!)

As you can see it's been a big year for small caliber firearms here at the Dire residence.  My great grandfathers 10/22 is going to be well appointed and my PSA .22 AR-15 is on its way to excellence.  High fives all around and I'll see you guys at the capitol protesting with HiFiCo.  I'll also complain here, because that's what I do.

Political Discussion / Protestors at the Capitol today:
« on: November 03, 2021, 06:56:36 PM »
Drove by the capital on my way home from picking up my long gun permit.  There was quite the group (150-200) of mask and vaccine mandate protesters out front.  Is this going on daily or was it an event?

Haven't heard this much talked about and noticed the website was offline.  Hope to see the torch passed successfully and Danger Close continuing to be Oahu's premier one stop shop for great gun deals and tactical cookies.

Wanted to make sure that this has been put from theory into practice so that I'm not giving some coworkers bad advice.  (Army NG vet so no safety/practical knowledge concerns)

Rather than all of us endlessly calling our local gun stores I thought you guys might be able to report what you're finding when you drop in to visit, or if any of our dealers might want to post what they still have in stock and prices.  Hopefully this gets some traction.  Thanks in advance.

Off Topic / 14 Day Quarantine Experience.
« on: July 07, 2020, 10:25:20 PM »
I thought I'd give you guys a little info on what my 14 day quarantine looked like after spending a month on vacation in WI. (And some bonus info on the air travel experience.)

I was away from May 13 to Jun 15.  I flew on Alaska and they had all the middle seats empty both ways.  I had layovers at Sea Tac and both there and the Minneapolis airports were ghost towns.  Maintaining minimum distances was never a problem once we landed.

On the return flight Ag declaration forms were filled out and returned to the flight attendant as usual in addition to a personal information form that we were to turn in upon arrival at Honolulu.

After landing we had our temperature checked by National Guardsmen and were put in line to turn in the personal information forms and sign agreements to self impose quarantine.  The girl taking my information verified my address with my drivers lic. and then called my phone to make sure it was a legit number.  I have no idea what I agreed to in the quarantine form because they never bothered to give me a copy.

The "Sate of Hawaii COVID-19 Quarantine Enforcement Task Force" followed up 5 days later with a text asking if I had been "complying with the mandatory 14-day quarantine rule" and asked to know how I was doing.  Texted back that I was in compliance and was doing fine.  The Task Force responded with a "Mahalo!" the following day.  If there was any other attempts to monitor me I'm unaware of them.

Hope this information was helpful to anyone considering travel.  Cheers!

If a pro gun Republican can't win an election then I'll do my part to vote out the anti gun Democrat candidates in the primaries.  Cheers!

Off Topic / Where to buy and sell coins on Oahu?
« on: November 13, 2019, 12:05:19 AM »
Hey gents.  I'm on the hunt for a couple of coins.  A 1900 Morgan Silver Dollar, condition largely irrelevant, and an 1976 Ike (40%) silver dollar in good shape.

Story time:  In the early 80's my dad and I used to stop in and visit an old farmer that my father had bought out and given a living lease to.  On one of those visits he gave me a 1900 silver dollar, explaining that it was from the year he was born.  He never had kids of his own and I guess he wanted to pass it down to someone who would appreciate it.

Fast forward to 2017.  My father offered to sign over the very same farm to me so I could retire there and build a house.  Turns out old Alvin made a good choice in giving me the 1900 silver dollar as I found it with some of my personal items in my parents house.  I thought it was pretty cool to have a connection to the original owner so I brought it back to Hawaii with me.

Which brings us to today.  I'd love to get a hold of a spare 1900 Morgan Silver Dollar to keep on my person as part of my daily carry.  I'd hate to lose the original or put a ton of wear on it, but I'm willing to accept a surrogate to carry to remind me of why I go to work every day.  (Especially the bad days.)

Which brings me to part 2 and the 1976 40% silver Ike hunt.  Turns out life didn't have kids in store for me either and I'd like to turn over the 1900 and a 1976 (the year I was born) to who ever gets the place after me.

I'm sure you guys coin and bullion collections are like your gun collections.  All lost in a tragic boating accident.

Here's a picture of the old girl (if it posts).

General Discussion / AK drum mag recommendation
« on: February 16, 2019, 10:42:05 PM »
Do any of you gentlefolks have any experience with 7.62x39 drum mags for AK's?  I've got a Arsenal SAM7R that I would love to put a drum mag on.  I'm not planning on doing any combat rolls or anything crazy, just looking for something that will last and is reliable.

Legal and Activism / Pro Gun Bill Priority?
« on: January 31, 2019, 11:51:42 AM »
I'm all up to date with phone calls and emails on the assault weapons ban bills.  While the taste of having my free time co-opted for defensive activism is fresh in my mouth (yuck) is there one Pro Gun Bill that stands above all others that is worth pushing?  Perhaps a couple favorites?

I told all the Reps and Senators assistants they were going to hear back from me.  I'd hate to be a liar just because I've check all the boxes I can on a work day.

Hey folks. I recently switched from Kaiser to HMSA. Can anyone recommend a 2a friendly general practitioner near Mililani?  Competent is a plus!

Thanks!

General Discussion / Accurate Subcompacts and Micro Pistols?
« on: July 28, 2018, 12:22:03 PM »
A man once said that an accurate firearm is an interesting firearm.

I’ve got a carry permit for my mainland adventures for which I picked up a Glock 26. I find it’s sufficiently accurate for our 25 yard range. Do any of you chaps have experience with subcompacts and micros that would be suitable for me to enjoy here for challenging target shooting as well as for my mainland carry?

If I get something new I’d like to enjoy it year round.

General Discussion / Clear Backpacks at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High
« on: March 22, 2018, 05:50:00 PM »
Gentlemen, I have detected a teachable moment.  The student activists in Florida are displeased that they are required to use clear backpacks.  The lesson is that trading away rights for safety is all well and good until someone takes a right you care about.  Be careful what you ask for.  Enjoy!

General Discussion / Anyone with experience with Ruger Mark IV’s?
« on: March 13, 2018, 09:56:05 AM »
Gentle folks, I’m strongly considering a Ruger Mark IV for general purpose plinking and as something easier to shoot than my SR22 on the pistol target range.

Other than appearances are there any significant differences between the hunter/target models and the 22/45 if I use an RMR?

Wouldn’t just be easier for them to identify me by sewing the star to my pajamas?  This is bullshit.

Legal and Activism / stripped lower re-registration?
« on: September 22, 2017, 03:49:28 PM »
Greetings gentlefolks.

You fellows have been an excellent resource in the past and I was hoping  you could clear up some confusion for me.

I recently registered a stripped AR lower on Oahu and was informed by HPD that I needed to return to either re-register it or update the description (officer wasn't clear) after I had completed the build.  I twice attempted to clarify that the lower was a stripped lower and under law was the firearm and not an unfinished 80%.  Each time the officer reiterated that me that once I start drilling it (?!) I would have to bring it in and re-register/update.

At this point I was concerned that they thought I was attempting to register an 80% and attempted to clarify with the officer who collected my final signature for the lower.  She informed me that I did not have to bring the lower back after I had completed the build.  She then became unsure of herself and conferred with the other two officers.  At this point she returned and informed me that I needed to have a full description of the completed rifle on file if I sold it.  I pointed out that only the lower was a controlled item.  She the followed up by informing me that they had had trouble with people making AR pistols and I needed to bring it back to have the barrel length measured, although she seemed to concede that this was a pretty flimsy reason to return as well.  At this point she decided to confer further with the other two officers working in registration and they returned and informed me without explanation that I indeed did need to return the rifle when the build was complete.

At this point I shut my mouth because I didn't want to be argumentative and assumed I could easily research the statutes or perhaps find an older thread here on 2aHawaii.

I spoke with my FFL and he was surprised to hear that I had been asked to re-register the completed build as well.  Other individuals who have purchased stripped lowers were unaware they had to return.  Review of Hawaii Revised Statutes showed no sign of this requirement although I may have overlooked something.

I realize that the officers in firearms registration are not infallible.  I've had previous incidents in which: When applying for a pistol permit they questioned my affidavit because it was notarized and issued by a private local NRA accredited instructor rather than one of the more well know instructors affiliated with local gun stores, and also a delay due to confusion over which parts were the serial number on a 1970's era 1911 (the slide and barrel have military stock numbers stamped where you might expect to find a serial number on a Glock).

My ultimate questions are:
1. Do I indeed have to return to re-register the firearm after it's completed?
2. If so what statute are they referencing to require this?
3. How long has this requirement been in place?

I realize that them wanting me to return is unenforceable and relies on the honor system and that I could just blow it off, however my right to bear arms is important to me and I very much want to stay on the right side of the law.  To be clear I do not want to come off as insulting to HPD either.  I have had friends who were officers here in the past and I know it isn't an easy job.

Thank you to anyone who might have any insight into this.
