PCC - Recommendations and Sharing Experiences
« on: April 02, 2022, 11:32:12 AM »
Finally picked up a PCC in 9 mm recently.  A friend is moving away and needed to liquidate some of his collection, so I figured I would "help".  ;D

It's a AR style with Colt SMG mag lower, which was what I was looking to get for a while.  I had the mags for probably over 2 years now, but finally getting the gun.  Both the ammo craziness and COVID put a big damper on that, as well as getting side tracked by the rabbit holes of .22 lr and long(er) range centerfire.  In the last many months, I was able to slowly pick up components for 9 mm, so that should help both getting back into shooting pistols as well as the PCC.

Anyways, what have you got?  Good, bad, etc.  For USPSA/IPSC, I've seen many CZ and MPX.  I came close to getting an MPX a while back before deciding to go the Colt pattern SMG route.

For now, have have the gun and recently picked up a Holosun.  My first time owning a Holosun, so looking forward to seeing how the red dot does.

Been using my CMMG ARC9 upper with Endomags. I estimate 600-ish rounds since KHSC re-opened…zero malfunctions.

Nice.  I've seen a couple folks shooting that in PCC matches. Seems to work well.  I thought about those, particularly flexibility of options with mags and lowers.

The reliability of these are something I definitely will keep and eye on.  A couple of shooting buddies have had numerous issues with their PCC.  I think at least one uses Colt mags.  However, they are both very much tinkerers, and who knows what variables that introduces.

Since this mirrors the manual of arms of a regular AR-15 1:1, I’m using this as primary for training. Build list to follow (props to Bushido for building the upper).

Upper:
CMMG Bolt/Barrel kit 9mm SBN
PSA 14.5” Lightweight Handguard, MLOK
Aero Precision M4E1 upper (forum sale)

Lower:
Spikes Tactical Forged lower
Magpul K2 grip
MFT minimalist stock
Generic milspec buffer tube
Generic carbine buffer/spring
ALG ACT trigger
CMMG Lower parts kit

Magazines - gen2 Pmag-30 with MeanArms EndoMag inserts, specific to the CMMG Guard system. I think this insert is truly what makes the system so reliable.

Mine is same builder, but Colt SMG mags.  I was close to getting the same system you have though.  The two who I've seen use that in PCC competition, it performed well.

I know you mentioned no malfunctions in your PCC.  That said, what have you read/heard on malfunction clearance procedures for the PCC with the EndoMag inserts?

Looking at my PCC, there's a VERY slight feedramp.  At least very different from an AR15 or even typical 9 mm pistol.  Will see how it goes, probably this weekend.

Is that the Colt mac10 type mags? Which are like $100 a pop?

Colt brand mags are pricey for their SMG 9mm magazines.  I bought a variety of other brands, but known for good functioning.  Metalform, ASC, Brownells, etc.  I got some blems as low as around $12/mag, but that was pre-craziness.

Glock- and Colt-mag compatible Endomag inserts have the extractor molded into the insert/magazine, so regular AR-15 malfunction clearance (drop mag, run charging handle) won’t kick out the live round from the Glock/Colt bolt. An empty magazine inserted into the firearm is required to do that…trying to empty a firearm with an inserted magazine just didn’t sit well with me.

That’s why i chose the CMMG system: the extractor is built into the CMMG bolt, so the drop-mag/run-handle clearance drill works 1:1.

Yeah, I hear you.  I do see value in 9 mm PCC for training, it's very much a fun gun for me.  Wish we had ranges where we could shoot steel with rifle, at least more often.

let us know about the Holosun.   I really like them.  I have 1 for my AR, and 3 pistol Holosuns.

Will do. I mounted it last weekend, but didn't get to shoot.  Will be shooting it this weekend.  The reticle (I got the dot and circle, like the EoTech) looked very clean.  Just have to play with the auto setting.  It might take a little getting used to.

A trusted shooting friend/instructor has had one on his main training and teaching rifle and it's held up.  I wouldn't even get close to the level of use that his rifle gets.

I'd also be down to try a Holosun on a pistol.  Might lead me to getting another handgun just for the RDS.   ;D

friend of mine has the Ruger PCC.  I've shot it a few times.  its good and its cheaper than most PCC.
when he first got it, I put it together for him.  the charging handle on the left side, installed the Glock mag adapter (also comes with the Ruger mag adapter installed), and installed the extended mag release which is also ambidextrous.  all super easy to install, anybody can do it in a few minutes
I don't have a lot of experience shooting PCC's, so can't really compare it to an AR style PCC, other than the Ruger is cheaper
there were no failures with the Ruger.  I think if I were to get into PCC, I would get the Ruger
trigger isn't so great, but there is an aftermarket one but its pretty expensive and I think that's the only one, but since I wouldn't be shooting bullseye competitions with it, maybe I could live with the stock trigger

I can vouch for the Holosun 507c with ACSS Vulcan reticle. This is the first pistol RDS I’ve owned and I’ve had no trouble finding the dot/chevron.

One buddy is really interested in the Ruger PCC.  I haven't tried or even seen one.  I came close to buying a much older version, the one that used the same mag as the P89 (I think) pistols.  That was about 20 years ago now though.

Shot the PCC this past weekend and it's pretty sweet.  I only had time to do a quick zero with the Holosun and shoot a box of 9.  Boresight was pretty close and was able to get a solid zero in about 5-6 shots.  Overall, really impressed with both the gun and the Holosun.  Looking forward to shooting this setup more.  Too bad they don't allow PCC at the silhouette range, or at least they didn't used to.

Flawless function, but expected with a product of the builder.  The gun came with mags, but tested some ASC mags that I had previously and all that I tested functioned well.  Noted that a bit of plastic was stripped off at the top of the follower, but that's about it.  I had shot many PCCs over the years, but never owned one until now.  The dirtiness of the blow back design is no joke.  Heard from many folks that it isn't that big of a deal with regular monitoring, but I typically clean decently well on a regular basis.

Overall, this will be a fun gun to plink and to train with.  Better get busy loading up some 9. . .

Bolt/BCG group available for 10% off MSRP. Haven’t seen parts available on CMMG’s site since last year.

If I took advantage of that sale, I'd then have to buy the upper to go with it.   :P  ;D

But seriously, I'm also seeing a lot of parts/components being back in stock, and even on good sales lately.  So maybe a sign of overall recovery.  Not holding my breath, but I hope that translates to ammo soon.

For those of you what reload for PCC, what is your favorite powder?

I only have TiteGroup, which I got primarily for pistols.  I've had some folks recommend slower burning powders, and others have said doesn't matter.  I'm not looking for uber accuracy.  As long as I get reliable functioning and decent accuracy (at least bulk factory ammo level) is what I want.
