iPhone photos not uploading no matter what format I choose
« on: August 09, 2024, 05:33:47 PM »
Hello I need some assistance. I’m trying to upload photos from my iPhone onto my listing, but it keeps saying:

“Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow.

Please consult your server administrator for more information.”

I’ve played with literally every format option on my camera setting, usually It would upload a photo with the most compatible camera capture / 12 MP photo capture. I’m stumped. Can anybody help please? 🤙

Uploading 12MB picture files to any website is probably not needed unless it's for downloading for high resolution printing or large desktop backgrounds.

I bring my pictures into the macOS Preview app where I crop out as much of the picture as I can, adjust the size - usually to about 500x500 roughly, and save it as a jpeg.  i just uploaded a half dozen jpeg pics each one under 50KB.

Jpeg is a "lossy" format, so depending on the size and quality setting you choose, it reduces the file size by only keeping enough of the picture's data to reproduce it at that size.  Enlarging/zooming in on a jpeg too much while viewing it usually makes it too grainy to be of much use.

Anyway,  here's an article on a few ways to change the file size of pics on an iPhone.

https://www.macobserver.com/tips/how-to/how-to-make-pictures-and-files-smaller-on-iphone/

You can find many other ways to do the same thing if you do a websearch.

Hope that helps.

I just tried uploading a small PNG file and this site wouldn't take but it took a small JPG file.

lol that’s weird af. My jpegs/jpgs no matter how small will just not work at all. Thanks for the help. It took me on a small journey, although none of the solutions worked for me. I did however stumble upon a jpeg to pdf converter which finally worked for my listing. Thank you 🤙

Check your iPhone settings to make sure you don't have JPEG MAX turned on.  It's a format similar to iPhone's HIEF.

Hey thanks. I’ve tried literally every format combo, resolution control off and on with every format combo and it’s still not allowing me to upload. In fact, I can’t even upload pdf’s anymore. Sucks because it really interferes with my ability to sell my firearm since people are visual creatures.

The problem might be your iPhone browser if that's how you're connecting. I assume you're not using Tapatalk, since those posts usually include a footer that says so.

Try installing the Tapatalk app on your iPhone and use that to upload pics.  i've read that often works around the iPhone browser upload issues.

Other than that, if you have a PC or Apple computer, try copying the files there and upload.  The browsers on phones are not as robust as those installed on most computers.  That's why Tapatalk might work -- it's not a web browser.

I don't have an iPhone, so I can't really tell what your issue might be.  Just trying to figure it out with the info others have posted online about the SMF forum software which is used here:  SMF 2.0.15 | SMF © 2017, Simple Machines -- with iPhone upload problems.

So I installed that app, got connected to these forums but still got the same error message trying to post pics. My cat pissed all over my motherboard while I had my glass removed lol, so I’m currently in the process of waiting on parts for a new build.

Thanks for trying to help though. I’ll keep at it with searching other forums for answers.

My cats have ruined a laser printer and 2 monitors, one of which was an $800 34" Dell.

Something about electronics attracts them.  So, I do feel your pain.

I started covering my monitor and printer if they can get to them, and I keep the door to my office closed which has storage servers.

I'm not an administrator, so I don't know what the thresholds are here.  I notice you're still labeled "Newbie."  It's possible there are limits for Newbies that might include uploads, but I have no idea.  I would think any restrictions would apply to the classified section, not to only certain registered users.

If you can borrow a computer until you get yours built just to perform a short test using the exact same files that failed, it might demonstrate it's an account or forum problem, not a client app/device problem. Could narrow down the cause a bit.

In the meantime, if you have or would like to register for a free account on any public, free picture storage service, you can upload there and just post links here.  I do that exclusively.  The advantages are:
- picture links posted in the forum are displayed full size, as opposed to showing a thumbnail that must be clicked before you can see the uploaded picture;
- doesn't take much storage space on the forum which helps this site;
- usually much more compatible with a variety of formats and sizes;
- most include an editing feature; and
- your pics are saved in one place should you wish to use them again.

I use IMGUR, but the editing is a bit wonky -- at least for me.  Some features work fine, but the interface is a bit lacking.

I'm thinking of trying flickr when I get time to play around with it.

https://identity.flickr.com/sign-up

if you start looking for a storage service, look for free unlimited storage.  Many impose a limit for the free subscription, than charge for when you exceed that.

Thanks for the link. I did my thing, and tested compressing it to fricken 5kb’s and it still said my image was too large to upload. I think you’re right, I’ve gotta be restricted on here. Ain’t no way a 5kb PIXEL is too large to upload 🤣

Oh well. My last stand is to use someone else’s computer sometime next week.. Smh

So, after many tests, I think the one common symptom is I can't add a photo-format attachment on any thread in any category.

I also am seeing problems with external links to imgur photos if I quote your comment in the reply.  The following is an example:

Code: [Select]

************

************

So, given the weird symptoms, it might be more than one cause.

We routinely see problems adding attachments.  Often it's an issue with the server storage being low.  That's an administrator's problem.

This is why I always use an external storage site for pics I post.  i also like that the pics are displayed full size instead of a clickable thunbnail.

The second problem happens when I quote your comment and try to use an external photo.  Different error message:

************

************

Works okay quoting other user's comments, just not yours.  Super weird.

Maybe this'll help. Maybe not.

I'd recommend using an external photo storage site regardless.  Saves a bunch of headaches on here with the recurring attachment issues.

As for what's happening with the quoted text, I have the blind buck syndrome:  No Eye Deer.

Damn it, I hate that I like that picture lmao. What you said makes a lot of sense. I will search high and low for the right external photo storage site for my cursed iPhone. Flickr is a no-go for me. So I’ll try postimages next and so on 🤙

Thank you sir.

Hallelujah. Tapatalk works! I didn’t know how to edit from the app before, so I used the web version which didn’t upload. If you edit your post from the app, the gallery option then selecting small will successfully upload a photo. Thanks again!
