General Discussion / Re: Hunting scope question

I started with a pair of Leupold 10x32's and now use Leica rangefinding binos with ballistics.  They're pretty pricey along with offerings from Zeiss and Swarovski but the glass is amazing.

I have Leupold's on everything...hunting setups or not.  They're fine for the $ and have a great warranty.  I've heard problems about them returning to zero when dialing but I do hold-overs.  They're lightweight and offer a bunch of options at different zoom ranges and objectives.

Most of them are min 2-3x and max 9-10x but my Grendel and Creedmoor are max 15x and 18x respectively...just in case I want to stretch out a shot.  The 3-18x is my only illuminated one because wasn't available non-illuminated in the reticle I wanted.  I spend the $$$ in bino glass because more time is spent behind them in the field than behind the scope.  My current binos are combo ballistic  rangefinders so I don't have to carry multiple things around.  Most hunting shots are 150yds and closer but have taken some over 250.  Whatever you go with, just make sure they're dialed down so you can find things easier in the scope and then zoom in.

How many scopes did you buy?  Why do you need to mount them to look through them when not on a rifle?  I wouldn't bother until you have a gun to mount on.  Then you can figure out what mount height works to achieve proper cheek weld.  Mounting them on a tripod would just turn them into a low-powered telescope.

Firearms and Accessories / Re: Bolt action Triggers

What did you like about the Timney triggers?
Mainly price and they offer triggers for most of my platforms in single stage which I prefer.  My bolt actions are all Winchester's.  My friend has a Jewell in his and it feels good.  It is around double the cost of the Timney.  I don't think Trigger Tech has a version for the Win M70.  I've replaced triggers mainly to get the pull weight down.  My preference is about 3.5# and some of my stock Win triggers were about 5-6# as I try to keep my pull weights no more than half the rifle weight.  I also use the Timney in an AR and Ruger 10/22.

Nothing wrong with the other two.  Just felt I'd keep all the triggers with one brand since they were available.  IMO all of them are better than stock but the pre-64 Win trigger is tough to beat with just a lighter trigger spring.

Of those three, your thoughts between them?  I have heard good things about them and pricing range is decent.  I know many folks who have Timney, but haven't tried them.  I heard their Glock triggers are quite popular, but that's a much different story.

I'm always interested in direct comparisons of products, but I can have only so many guns.   :( haha

Are you bolt actions for target shooting?  Plinking or just to have?  Hunting?  Intended application gives great context.

I've tried all and I went with Timney.  My stuff is geared mostly for hunting and I like the range of products and pricing from Timney.  I've got some older bolt-actions with non-replaceable triggers so I didn't want to have mix of single and 2-stage triggers.  Plus I was used to the single stage from hunting when I was younger.  Whatever I could replace with a Timney, I did.  I didn't know they made a Glock trigger.  Now I may have to get those.  Lol.

Single stage for me.  Timney, Jewel, Trigger Tech..  My old bolt-actions all came that way so I'm used to it.

The 6.5 CM is not a very "flat" shooting caliber compared to other many other faster rounds.  Normally the faster the round, the "flatter" it's considered.  The average factory 223/556 round shoots flatter at 3000fps than the average 2700fps 6.5 Creedmoor.  What the 6.5 round does excel at is that it isn't effected by wind drift as much at other rounds like the 223 or 30 cal rounds because of it's higher BC (ballistic coefficient). Someone once said that it was like shooting pencils when first looking at the round.  The 6mm bullets have an even higher BC.

When pulling up comparison info between the 143gr 2700 fps 6.5 CM and factory 55gr XM193 3100 fps 556, the CM will drop an 4 inches more than the 556 at 400 yds but will drift less in a 20mph side wind by more almost 23 inches at the same distance.

My 300 Weatherby Magnum's 150gr bullet @3500fps drops almost half as much as the Creedmoor but drifts about 5 inches more at 400yds.  This one's a barrel burner but it's harder to shoot as much because the recoil's pretty rough.

The folks I've been following shoot the .284 Shehane/Wheeler stuff and (don't quote me on this) they are pushing their stuff regularly in the 2800-low 3000 fps range.  My current .308 loads are in the meager 2500 fps range.  Maybe in the 2600 fps range tops, but out of a 20" barrel.  New gun in the works will have a much longer barrel.  I'd have to look up the common 6.5 loads, but I do recall that the 6 mm variants are barrel burners.  Not the 5000, or even 2-3x that much for .308.  Of course reports since I'm probably at around 2000 rounds in my factory gun.

But wow, 22-250 is pushing 4000 fps!  Yikes!  I was shooting with one of the black powder guys a while back and he let me shoot is 22.250.  I blame him for getting me started down the bolt action rifle road.
To me...anything over 3100-3200 will have reduced barrel life.  Just take a bit longer between shots.  At 2500 rds, that'll still take me a while to burn out the barrel.  Just replace it.  Unless you're buying carbon Proof barrels, they aren't too pricey.  I recently replaced two pre-1964 30-06 barrels that were heavily worn.  I have no idea how many rounds my grandfather and father shot through those old hunting rifles.  My 22" 6.5 CM only gets 2550fps from factory Hornady ELD-x's that are rated 2700fps.  Gotta handload to get anything near 2800fps from mine.  At about 50fps/inch, a longer barrel will only realize a moderate increase in speeds.

I read they are barrel burners like a 22-250
A 22-250 can reach up to 4000fps. You might get up to 2800-2850fps with the 6.5 Creedmoor.  I wouldn't put it in the same class as the 22-250.  The 308's speed is similar to the Creedmoor's depending on the grain weight.

Some people go very early to KHSC to secure spots.  They must have been very disappointed after traveling all the way there.
Even more when they had to turn around and get stuck in the traffic coming out of Hawaii Kai.

....
Yeah, this is what my friends and I did back in the day.
Nowadays if you commission a well known builder to make a gun for you, expect to wait years.

If you actually want a good shooter, you can buy a fancy upgraded gun off the shelf at à reasonable price and hand it off to a reputable mechanic to fine tune the action. That process might only take a year or so.

Yes, true but in my case, it's a custom made for me with my input.  Yes, it took a while to start and complete.  Any custom shouldn't require much fine tuning especially not by the builder himself I'd he's truly qualified.  Mine didn't.  It's super accurate and runs perfectly.

I went YG last week, just to see what kinds of handguns they had.  They weren't that busy plus they limit how much people in the store but there was nobody outside.

So maybe that was part of the reason but we had a no rushed discussion of the various handguns they had.  It's amazing that you can have your mind set on one particular gun then change your mind when you get to handle and discuss the other types available.

Anyway, the only 5.56/.223 they had at that time was Federal "Power Shok" 55 grain SP in .223.  One box was $29.95 for 20.

Anyone know how much that ammo was going for pre-Covid ammo shortage?  Also is this considered "good stuff?"  Seems like a rip off price to me but I bought 1 box in thanks for their time discussing handguns.

Plus I like to have different types of ammo of the same caliber instead of just range/bulk ammo.
Those Federal Powershoks aren't considered target ammo.  Most people use them for hunting as they're soft points meant to expand upon impact.  Most range loads are typically full metal jacket (FMJ) that don't need the ability to expand.  I think that price is about par for the times.  Pre-pandemic price would probably been around $20 or just under.  In the calibers that I've used for hunting, they were accurate enough and got the job done.  For 223, if not for hunting, I'd save them for self defense.

As I waited outside the registration room, I saw one guy get the last 3pm appt at approx. 8:30.  So you gotta get in line early to get appts to come back.  Those people in walk-in line for registrations were being taken care of by window in records room and not my normal registration window.

Those who put in and got accepted for multiple hunts should be DQ'd for the upcoming season.  DLNR should redraw for those spots.  Sucks for those who followed the rules and didn't get picked.  People waited 2 years for this mess.

Yes, that was a lucky find 2 years ago; I don't find (or buy) them all, lol.  Looking at the enlarged pic, there seems to be quite a lot of pits and scratches; price is usually commensurate with condition.

There are some scratches but no pitting.

Lol, in your dreams.  Those years represented the best craftsmanship of the post war Era.  Slide flats absolutely flat with mirror polishing and the deep, rich bluing that Colt was famous for.  Generally the slide to frame fit was good and triggers crisp.  The Series 70s guns, while still nicely polished and blued, were rattle traps compared to guns of the 50s and 60s.

Unless the seller has absolutely no clue you won't find one for less than 4 figures.  Check sold prices on the auction sites, as there are damn few ever offered for sale locally (I've only been doing the gun shows for nearly 40 years now...)

If mine wasn't in at least good to average condition, I'd do those upgrades.  I got mine which was made in 1953 at a lgs on consignment.  This was just over 2 years ago and it was for much less than 4-figures.  It came with a couple barrels, non-original grips and a set of Herrett target grips.  I personally don't care for the series 70 and newer.  I guess you missed this one and I just got lucky.  I was in consignment for at least a year.  There was a military-issue ww2 one for sale at the same time but asking was well into 4-figures.  There were some inconsistencies like a possible refinish.
