Off Topic / When a Scammer Causes a Murder
« on: Today at 09:41:42 AM »
Just saw a YT video news report of a recent homicide where an 81 year old man in Ohio shot and killed an Uber driver -- a 61 year old female.

The scammer tried to pull the "I'm an officer of the court" scam in which a relative of the victim needs bail money.  After getting resistance to every demand for electronic payment, the scammer then threatened to kill the victim and his family if he doesn't pay the ransom.

The scammer then ordered an Uber to pick up "a package" at the victim's address -- no rider, just a pick-up and delivery order for the package.  It sounds like the scammer didn't tell the male victim about the Uber, just that someone would be there soon to get the money from him.

The Uber driver showed up and asked for the package, and the male victim thought she was working with the scammer -- the same person who just threatened to kill him and his family..

He chased her away brandishing a revolver, and he took her cell phone.  I guess she wanted her phone back and wouldn't leave without it.

Investigators called the scammer who answered the phone and identified himself as also law enforcement.  They set up a time to meet, but the scammer never showed.

Michael Knowles did a reaction video to this, and he believed it was a "bit," staged for the podcast.

Based on her later Tweets, it appears she was serious.

The 'magician' Sukihana explained why she said what she did, and it wasn't any better:

Great historical perspective on what the US gov't has done to its citizens -- even to our veterans.  No reason to believe it can't happen again.

He's facing 7 months in prison for sharing a meme someone else made.

We've all seen (and shared?) jokes about one party voting on Tuesday and the other voting on Wednesday to avoid massive lines.

It's an understood joke that's been going around for several general election cycles -- probably ever since email and FB started.

IMO, if someone is stupid enough to believe these obvious jokes, they are too stupid to vote.  But, maybe that's just me ....

Texas is quickly being labeled a swing state for 2024.   :wtf:

Now, there's evidence someone is registering over a million people to vote in TX without a photo ID.

Even though current TX law restricts who can vote by mail-in ballot, if there's another "emergency", that detail might be overlooked.  There was recently a story that the Bird Flu H5N1 has been found in a human living in TX.  Coincidence?

Another Person Was Infected With Bird Flu. What’s Going On?
Quote
The current version of the virus wreaking havoc emerged in 2020, and it
made its way to the U.S. about a year later. Another subtype of avian flu
made the rounds here back in 2015, but it mostly just affected farmed birds,
like chickens and turkeys. This time it’s been decimating wild bird populations
too. Pelicans, vultures, and raptors have been especially affected.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/another-person-infected-bird-flu-140000062.html

2020?  Another coincidence, obviously.

Right now, the CDC says the the risk assessment for a US H5N1 outbreak is "low."  However, why would we have tens of millions of anti-viral medicines to treat it if there's no potential for an outbreak to occur?
Quote
As far as vaccines go, the CDC has a couple candidate vaccines that could
be quickly tweaked and mass produced if needed. There are also at least
four antiviral medications that can treat people sick with bird flu, one of which
(oseltamivir) is stockpiled by the government to the tune of tens of millions of
doses. Generic versions of that drug also exist commercially worldwide.

All that's needed for Trump to lose again is for as many states as possible to accept mail-in ballots with no ID being presented.  TX published a statement saying if someone registers without an ID, they verify the identity via the Social Security roles (which is where the 1M+ registrations number came from), and those people will have to show an ID when voting.  However, if mail-in voting is extended again as almost all states did for the COVID-19 pandemic, then nobody doing mail-in will have shown an ID to register and vote.

Funny how these "errors" never seem to happen until an election year.  Nine states in the 2020 presidential election sent eligible voters mail-in ballots totaling in the millions without requiring applications first. Additionally, Montana allowed counties to decide whether it would send ballots that way, no request necessary.  At least one state was found to have violated their state constitution by doing so.

This is one example where a new rule was set by a state during the election.  Only after the election is the rule adjudicated in court and found to be invalid, yet the damage has already been done.

Win by any means necessary -- something the Dems seem to take seriously.

O.J. Simpson, football legend
acquitted of notorious killings, dies at 76

Quote
The football great Orenthal James Simpson, known as O.J., who was
accused and ultimately acquitted in the killings of his ex-wife and her
friend, has died. Simpson was 76.

In a post on X, his family said he died on Wednesday. He "succumbed to
his battle with cancer," and was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

I guess we'll never know who killed his ex-wife and her friend  --  now that OJ is no longer searching.

I really have no words.  This is a special kind of entitled.

I'd also check around to see if he's plugged any extension cords into my outside power outlets, too.

Looks like you'll have to get up just after sunrise to see the eclipse.   Seems a bit anticlimactic with it so low on the horizon.

Of course, parts of the mainland will get a spectacular view while Hawaii only gets a 17.71% partial eclipse.

in the case Mock v. Garland in TX, several gun rights groups were able to obtain a preliminary injunction for the ATF's proposed pistol brace rule. The injunctions specifically shield all the members of those organizations against enforcement of the rule until the courts issue a final ruling on the issue.

As a latecomer to the lawsuits, the NRA has also obtained a preliminary injunction.  All NRA members are now protected from the pistol brace rule as well.

So, if you're an NRA member, you can legally own a pistol with a pistol brace without it being classified as an NFA item subject to registration and taxation, and you are not subject to the penalties outlined in the ATF rules for simply owning a pistol brace -- i.e. prison and fines.

Obviously, the NRA piggybacked on lawsuit successes of others, but at least they were able to scrape together enough money () to also sue and win for their members.

The reason this is important isn't because everyone is clamoring to own a pistol brace.  iI's because the ATF is in violation the Administrative Procedure Act (APA).  There is a list of half dozen or more reasons contained in various lawsuits as to how the ATF violated the APA, but they all focus on the ATF creating rules that contradict previous rules and not complying with notice and commenting period requirements.

The ATF has redefined what constitutes a pistol as well as a rifle in this and other rules (e.g. bump stocks).  Many of the ATF's rules should be codified into laws passed by Congress.  For the ATF to make rules that don't align with existing bans in the law shows they are effectively making new law where none exists.

These legal victories will hopefully give gun rights supporters the momentum to stop the ATF from making more and more rules that do nothing for safety and are only intended to keep law-abiding legal gun owners from exercising their rights.

This video walks through the court's findings and what the ruling means for NRA members.

Off Topic / All Hail, Diablo!
« on: March 26, 2024, 09:00:05 PM »
I found out the lifetime guarantee for Freud/Diablo saw blades is the real deal.

Had a slight kick-back while cutting a 1/4" thick piece of polycarbonate/plastic. The blade lost one entire tooth down to the main part of the blade, and 3 lost their carbide teeth.

I contacted Diablo through their website form, and a rep, Jennifer, replied in less than a day.  She asked for a description of what happened, and then asked for photos of the blade, my miter saw, and the piece that caused the kick-back.

The next day, she emailed a UPS label for me to return the blade and the damaged workpiece for them to examine, and then shipped out a replacement via UPS due to arrive next week.

Great customer service.  They stand behind their warranty, and the replacement process was quick and easy.

Violence Prevention Group Sued After
Man is Shot and Killed During Meeting

Quote
A Seattle gun violence prevention organization is being sued by the family of a man who
was shot and killed during a court-mandated appearance at a meeting, accusing the group
of failing to provide proper security.

19-year-old Omari Wallace was facing robbery charges in King County, Washington, but
prosecutors allowed him to be diverted into a program run by Community Passageways
in lieu of incarceration. While Wallace was attending an orientation meeting in March of 2021,
a man walked into the meeting at Emerald City Bible Fellowship and shot Wallace in a targeted
attack. The suspect himself was shot and killed by police while they were serving an arrest
warrant for homicide, but there were no officers at the meeting itself, even though Community
Passageways deals with a lot of individuals who've been accused and convicted of violent crimes.

According to court documents and news reports, there were nearly 40 people in attendance
when Hinds entered the Rainier Valley church and shot Wallace. The lawsuit alleges Community
Passageways “failed to take reasonable measures to ensure that the participants … were safe
from harm.” It also names the church and Urban Impact, another Washington nonprofit, as
defendants.

The action claims that after the shooting, Community Passageways staff and members refused
to cooperate with investigators, forcing then-King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg to
empanel a rare special inquiry to obtain documents, interviews and other information police say
they needed for the investigation.

“Both law enforcement and the community at large were bewildered how staff from the Community
Passageways, a violence-prevention program which receives millions of dollars in public funding,
could watch a murder committed before their eyes and not assist law enforcement,” the lawsuit states.

A truck load of facts and common sense.    :geekdanc:

As far as I can figure it out, based on a variety of sources, there are 2 issues in the aftermath of the NYC judgement against him for fraud.

Today was the deadline for him to pay a bond of $454M in order to hold off the city from seizing his properties.  BTW, the fraud verdict was in summary judgement, meaning he never had a full trial to defend himself.

A court now said he has an additional 10 days to post the bond, and the amount was reduced to $175M, or about 1/3 the original amount.

The first issue is the bond.  That's basically a shield that protects his properties from seizure until his appeal is completed.  Without the bond, the city has the right to take his properties even while he's waiting for his appeal to be heard.

The second issue is the appeal itself.  That can take up to 3 years or more if his case has to wait behind the appellate cases ahead of him.

This video walks through the many facets of the case, how his cash is being held hostage to prevent it from helping him in his campaign, and how he's being prosecuted under laws that nobody else has ever been prosecuted under.  Most pundants say if Trump can be found guilty of over-valuing a property, then every single real estate developer in NYC is likely just as guilty.

In the 1960s, anyone diagnosed with a mental defect was labeled prohibited from buying firearms.

In the 1990s, the Social Security Administration, followed in 1998 by the Veteran's Administration, decided that anyone getting services from them and has asked for another to manage their finances for any reason were summarily designated "mentally defective."  That earned them the prize of having their names submitted to the FBI as prohibited gun buyers in the NICS database.

Biden just signed into law a spending bill which includes a provision to stop the VA from reporting veterans without a diagnosed mental illness or defect from being reported to NICS.  Notice, the veteran provision was wedged into a spending bill, which i'm sure was not brought to Biden's attention until after the signing.

Of course, the anti-gun groups are losing their minds claiming thousands of vets have been handed "a death sentence."

Since the sole criterion for the previous rule was "having someone else manage their finances", there's no evidence anyone in that group will be more likely to misuse a firearm.

This is good news for the Second Amendment and for veterans who deserve the respect and liberties they earned to defend themselves, hunt or sport-shoot if they are so inclined.

Don't forget: many of these veterans are trained and experienced in warfare and would be vital in any resistance to a tyrannical government should the need arise.

Pittsburg police will no longer be responding to any calls which are not "in-progress emergencies."

This, after NY began deploying the National Guard to provide law enforcement.

It's going to get worse before it gets better.

So, it's not inflation -- it's price gouging by businesses that makes things so expensive now.

That's according the Resident Biden's White House.

Is he stupid?
