Then you have to think about accelerants.  Each time a shot is fired, combustible powder is expelled along with the projectile.  Not all off it is burned, so if over time, a small amount of powder accumulated where the ignition point is, that powder could help get things started.  I figure most of the powder is washed away when it rains, but it's been very dry lately.  Just a thought.

I set 808GC on fire once.  I suspect burning powder touched the floor igniting the unburnt powder.  A ring of fire with flames 3ft high slowly expanded out.  It was cool.

Another possibility is someone was shooting tracers or incendiary rounds.  Or a flare gun.

Pondering the fire yesterday....
What if a fire were to start behind the rifle/pistol range.
Would that not burn up the rail tracks going up to the lookout?

People might get stuck on top of the hill.
People might have to run either up or down the tracks to escape the fire.
What, Me Worry?

That happened years ago when someone shot a flare gun at the range.

I told this story before.
About 45 years ago when the pistol range was on the Hanauma Bay side, a black powder patch set a small fire on the grass. It was also a very hot summer day. At that time, the range was run by hpd. One of the cops dragged a hose out and flooded the lawn.
Apparently there was an accumulation of unburnt powder under the grass which continued to burn under the water. It took quite a while for the bubbling fire to stop. That's why I tell people not to throw old powder on the grass as fertilizer, because it doesn't really deteriorate.
This doesn't have anything to do with the fire yesterday, but it's a cool story.

There are a couple of other ways to get up and down Koko Head besides the stairs . . . hiking the ridge.
