I talked to a HFD guy this afternoon on the Koko Head Trail involved in the helicopter transport of an injured hiker. I told him I heard hikers are charged $3500.00 for a helicopter rescue. He laughed and said there is not a charge unless he needs an ambulance ride.

The rescued hikers may not pay but there is still a cost. The financial cost and the resource being taken away from a potential rescue somewhere else.

I tried to take a picture of the paramedic dropping down from the helicopter, but the pic was too blurry. The range was in cease-fire for about an hour.

One hour...... :grrr:

It happened to me one weekday a while ago.  Range only open from 12 to 4.

Was not happy.

....
They should extend the range time if they have to do a rescue. Maybe an extra 30 minutes would be good.

They should install a zip line from the top to evacuate injuries.

On Sunday, 01/11/26, at around 9:38 p.m., I had a chopper make me think it was landing on my roof!

It flew at treetop altitude right over my place in Aiea and landed in the field in front which is next to the Aiea Public Library. School kids practice sports after school there.

There had been emergency vehicles converging in the Clinical Labs parking lot for an hour or more just on the other side of Halewiliko St across from that field.

The chopper touched down for less than 5 minutes.  I initially thought they were picking someone up for transport to a medical facility, but that made no sense because Pali Momi and Kaiser hospitals are really close.

After hearing that some air rescues were happening that weekend, and reading that the hiker doesn't pay except for ambulance transport, it makes more sense that the chopper was meeting the emergency vehicles across the street to get whoever looked after and taken to the hospital if needed.

Very fun night, especially when the chopper took off again, made a steep u-turn and flew right over my place again.

I grabbed my phone to record just after it landed.  The blinking light is on the tail rotor/rudder area.

I stopped recording after it landed until I heard the engine rev up again for take off.

For reference:  From my apartment window on the 3rd floor, I can see the Aloha Stadium, part of Pearl Harbor (Aiea Bay), the Ford Island bridge, and lots of air traffic around the airport.
