Extra weight for guys on Oahu. Dump that tin for an extra MRE and a good compass.

Might be useful for outer island, but doubtful. Your fooling yourself if you think mainland style prepping works here. If I'm going in the bushes, I'm bringing snares, rope, and a shit ton of fire starters.

Step 1: fully load 22 with any subsonic round available.

Step 2: feed the birds...anything.

Step 3: shoot the birds while they eat.

It really is that simple....

Hunting / Re: Guided Hunts: Now Available
« on: January 13, 2013, 08:47:53 PM »
I've killed with 223, 12g, 45-70, 30-30, 30 carbine, even 22lr, from inside 100 yards, so really anything you can shoot effectively will work. Obviously if your taking long range shots, which I usually don't because of where I hunt, you'll need something like a 308, 30-06, 270, or what not.

I like my M1 carbine and my lever actions because where I hunt is in brush, sometimes heavy brush, and usually involves a lot of climbing and crawling. A light, compact, medium caliber rifle is in my experience the best tool for the job.

Also, I've received some calls lately about the guided hunts. I made a posting earlier, though I now feed I should address this situation in a little more detail.

These were being held on private land which I had permission from the landowner to shoot and run the dogs, as well as set up feeders. I made several ads, one of which was on this site.

Soon after I posted here, the guy got into it with one of the neighbors over something trivial and a theft occurred on the  property as well.

Not too long after that, the police showed up to a report of several "heavily armed men" in the bushes near the property line. You can have 1 guess on who those guys were. My cousin and I and some others.

Long story short, things are starting to settle down over there and the guy is starting to warm up to the idea of allowing the hunts again.

I will post again if we can make it happen. Mahalo.

Preparedness and Survival / Re: Lead vs. Gold?
« on: April 29, 2012, 11:26:57 PM »
I used to buy into that "stock up on gold" theory. I even bought gold quite frequently when it was around $800/ounce. However, I sold it all last year after coming to the logical conclusion of it not being that useful. Instead I have replaced my gold stash with more food, water, supplies, and some silver. I also agree with Ferfal on the idea of easily trade-able jewelry. I think in order for a precious metal to be viable in any P.A.W. scenario, its value has to be easily determined. Gold does not have that charactoristic. Silver coins, jewelry, bullets, food, liquor, or supplies can easily be traded because most of those things share a common value. Gold doesn't offer that, except for large purchases i.e., trading two gold coins for a horse or whatnot.

All in all I figure keep a couple gold ounces for large purchases, like someones life, but stock up on silver and jewelry, liquor, or supplies for more common trades.

Off Topic / Re: No more US Constitution what would you do?
« on: March 14, 2012, 11:50:23 PM »
A lot of tough talk in this thread so I'll just keep watching the news the see which one of y'allz is first to go rambo on the alphabets.

And now I step up on the soapbox:

The Constitution doesn't need to be dissolved or America invaded for it to be impotent, just look at all the different laws and orders in existence that circumvent it.

While everyone seems to have a hard on for red dawn scenarios, the real damage is done by the very people you entrust to protect the Constitution, including the politicians, the bureaucrats and lobbyists, the generals, the local elected servants, even the lowest police rookie or private.

The entire governmental system to its core requires the dissolution of the Constitution to gain and maintain power. Its nothing that can be prevented or stopped, so long as there is government, there will be its insatiable drive for power.

Deal with it.

General Discussion / Re: comunications during a dizaster
« on: March 07, 2012, 12:00:57 AM »
You can buy a NOAA weather radio from Radioshack. That will give you up to date weather and emergency alerts around the clock. Some CB radios come equipped with those channels as well.

You can also subscribe to various sms text or email services on your cellphone and computer.

You can receive emergency alerts and weather on any tv or radio. News channels spend millions of dollars to bring you the latest, greatest, breaking news first. You aint gonna hear about something before the networks.

A scanner is also helpful, though PD and FD are all digital now, and that's expensive. The most you can hope for is to catch the few EMS that still operate on analog, and maybe some aircraft and boaters.

Strategies and Tactics / Re: Terrorists attack Hawaii
« on: February 21, 2012, 05:43:03 PM »
Now y'all know I'm a 10/22 man, yet in this scenario, I would definitely take the glock.

500 rounds of 9mm is plenty to see through a limited upset such as this scenario, a small pistol is easily concealed when traveling or moving through cities, and 9mm is extremely effective for self defense.
