Firearms and Accessories / Slide milling for RDS and serrations
« on: October 02, 2023, 03:45:29 PM »
Aloha,

Is there any local shops/businesses recommended for milling services?

If not local any personal experiences using mainland shops?

End goal is to revive a M&P 1.0 by adding a RDS(need that milled out), ports, and serrations.

Mahaloz for any leads!   :shaka:

Reloading / Always inspect your brass
« on: May 18, 2021, 07:53:36 AM »
Just started reloading again after maybe 4-6 years and unfortunately relearned a few lessons I wanted to share.  First, checking checking OAL of brass is a simple process I do prior to seating primers.  Loaded 100 rounds of 308.  Brought my rifle down the next day to clean, and when I looked at the bolt face I noticed (again) pitting on the surface.  I found that this occurs from loose primer pockets.  The gas escapes and the side of the primer pocket that can cause pitting.  This is where I relearned to really inspect my brass.  I always do, just forgot  :(  to look for those indications of “loose” primer pockets or damage around them.  After a re-inspection of my loaded rounds I found 2 rounds that had issues.  Re-inspected my shot brass and found 5 with issues out of about 300.

Of note, these were 4th shot brass reloads and I do load them a little “hot”.  Future loads I will probably back down the charge to a lower node to save case life.  Hope this helps someone!

Reloading / Primer and powder storage
« on: January 08, 2021, 04:25:35 PM »
I’ve kept both my primer/powder in my garage for years now (sealed in plastic containers).  Wondering how many others also use the garage and if anyone that has stored primers/powder for long periods of time (5+ Years) have noticed any differences (specifically worried if I’ve risked ruining both over time.).  Any info is appreciated   :shaka:

« on: April 17, 2014, 07:21:16 PM »
Does anyone know?  Unfortunately I think I know the answer, but would love for someone to tell me I'm  wrong.  I think they are closed tomorrow because it is a State holiday...

I was planning on finally picking up my permit, and picking up my pistol to register it, but I just remembered my kid doesn't have school tomorrow because of the holiday  :'(

Reloading / Reloading: Lessons Learned
« on: January 10, 2014, 10:44:48 AM »
What mistakes have you made that you have leaned upon and established procedures or something to prevent it from happening again?  What tricks have you found along the way?

I use a turret press.
Here is my list:

1.  I was about to set primers when I remembered that I forgot to check headspace.  All 250-300 pieces of brass needed to be re-sized.
I now have a printed procedure on my reloading bench, just so I don't forget that again

2.  I was goingt to start decapping my spent casings in my decapping die, but when I put the case through the press I got a stuck case.  I accidentilly lined up my FL sizing die.
PAYING ATTENTION would have prevented this.  I now labled my dies (even though they don't even look the same...)

3.  I added walnut media and the casings into the tumbler and then added brass polish after.  After 2 - 2 1/2 hours I found a that majority of the primer pockets had a hard residue.
I now add my brass polish to my media and let it run for 10-15 minutes and then add the brass after.

4.  After I am done tumbling in walnut media, I use a media separator.  After the brass is covered in dust.
I now add about 3-4 used drier sheets and they collect most of the dust

5.  I had 50 cases filled with powder that I was about ready to start seating bullets into when I accidently pulled a cloth that the tray was on and spilled poweder.
I now seat a bullet as soon as I add powder to prevent this from happening

One of the biggest things that I try NOT to do is become complacent.  I can recall a few times where I caught things that were not right further down the line of loading than I would have liked.  (found a few cases with different headstamps right before I was about to start setting primers).

So, what have you learned?

Reloading / What's your favorite .308 bullet for long range?
« on: November 18, 2013, 10:19:32 AM »
Just wondering what others have used with success.  I currently settled on 175gr SMK for my bolt R700.  I plan on shooting at Pu'uloa with that load and have high hopes.  With that said, does accuracy at 100yrds translate to accuracy at longer distances majority of the time?  I understand that there are tons of variations that come into play, but I'm just asking a general question.  I think my next load development will be with 155gr Lapua Scenars.  So what's your guys experiences with different bullets?
