I feel safer already.  This is a great system as there was no way to report crimes in the past.

State launches gun tip line to gather reports of illegal firearms

https://www.staradvertiser.com/2024/10/10/breaking-news/state-launches-gun-tip-line-to-gather-reports-of-illegal-firearms/

As part of an ongoing effort designed to reduce gun violence, the state Department of Law Enforcement set up a Gun Tip Line for people to “make anonymous reports of illegal gun ownership and gun crimes,” according to a news release from the state.

“The Gun Tip Line offers another way the public can assist law enforcement in protecting our neighborhoods,” said DLE Director Jordan Lowe, in a statement. “Guns that have been stolen, guns that haven’t been registered and guns in the wrong hands are often used to commit crimes. The consequences can be tragic. So, if you see something, send something to the Gun Tip Line and help us make Hawai‘i safer.”

General Discussion / Waianae shooting and loader incident 4 dead Aug 30 2024

This incident deserves it's own post.

Dispute between neighbors leaves 4 people dead, 2 critically hurt in Waianae Valley

Homicide Lieutenant Deena Thoemmes reported that the calls described a neighbor using a front loader—a type of heavy construction machinery—to ram multiple cars into the home.

“Multiple individuals were in the carport and fled or tried to flee when the suspect opened fire, striking the victims,” said Thoemmes during a press conference held on Sunday.

During the incident, a 42-year-old male resident of the home fatally shot the suspect, who was his neighbor.

General Discussion / Doubling Down on TRO's - RE pearlridge murder
« on: August 13, 2024, 06:28:03 PM »
This is regarding the murder of a woman at the Pearlridge parking lot by her domestic abuser while on a TRO.  Mother is pushing for immediate arrest and tougher penalties for TRO violations.

Doubt it would work as the person will just bail out right away or be released due to no jail space.  Or other criminals will be released to make room.  And they would need a tougher penalty than murder and suicide to try prevent the tragedy from happening.

I'm pretty sure if the woman had a gun, the murder wouldn't have occurred.

General Discussion / Law of the Splintered Panel
« on: August 07, 2024, 09:44:01 PM »
In the news and reading this story makes me think of self defense with a gun.  https://www.khon2.com/aloha-authentic/the-law-of-the-splintered-paddle/

1.  "Stories share, while in search for a human sacrifice, Kamehameha spotted and pursued innocent fishermen along a Puna coast."

Sounds like a justified self defense shooting.

2.  "Following the dazing blow, Kamehameha’s steersman arrived to help free him when spears began to fly their way."

Sounds like Kamehameha could've used a gun too

3.  "Kamehameha proclaimed his most famous decree: “Let old men, women and children be free to lie by the roadside without fear of harm.”

Not sure how this relates to that story, but these people should have guns too.

General Discussion / Firearms International Indoor Range
« on: July 18, 2024, 12:02:01 AM »
I went to use Firearms International's new indoor shooting range today in preparation for a firearms training trip next week.  They are located on Nimitz behind Nimitz Center and Best Buy.  Parking is available.  Friendly staff and they've helped assisted in getting out the word on 2A stuff.  They have a 2 lane 8 yard shipping container range.  Range can handle up to 308 and the AC is very nice.  You start out by reading the waiver and there is a firearms check and RSO safety brief.  The RSO supervises you on the range.  Rapid fire is allowed.  Holster draw is allowed after a quick safety check.  I got to dim the range to practice flashlight techniques.  It was a good experience.  It's a little louder in there since the range is smaller, so I suggest doubling up on hearing protection.  I had a 29nrr plugs and needed a bit more reduction.

Now for the price.  It costs $1 per minute.  You can use your own ammo, but must pay a $20 "corkage" fee.  Store ammo is $18.99 for a box of 9mm and $29.99 for 40S&W. It's Norma ammo, a better quality ammo.  Targets are $5 each.  There is a 5% discount for military/LE.  My 72 minute session with 200 rounds came out to $190.  A 200 round session was longer than I needed.  For most people, 100 to 150 rounds would be good practice session.

Compared to 808GC - The price would be a little bit more at 808GC, depending on how you shoot, as they require store bought ammo and typically charge double the price for ammo but have a cheaper range fee.  It's a 15 yard range where you could do CCW testing and it has one rifle rated lane.  Can teach/coach, draw from a holster, and rapid fire.  However it gets hot in there and I don't like the wire target system which sways.  It's hard to find parking sometimes.

Compared to X-RIng - It's been a long time since I shot there but they do have the best range with lots of 25 yard rifle rated lanes, AC, and lots of parking.  Not sure what their prices and policies are nowadays, but I didn't like them in the past for charging an annual rapid fire/holster check fee, and not allowing tape or pens in the range nor allow teaching or coaching.

Tips to be efficient with time on the clock:
- Have your mags preloaded
- have your  gear on ...belt, holster, eye/ear pro, etc.
- have a written list of drills to do
- mark your shots with a colored sharpie marker
- have a fast magazine loader

General Discussion / High School Rodeo Shooting Sports
« on: July 06, 2024, 11:41:48 AM »
I'm doing a youtube livestream with my friend Mele who will be attending the High School Rodeo nationals in Wyoming in the shooting category.  She won the shooting category in Kauai and placed 4th in the State.  Next week she'll be competing in Wyoming.  In the livestream we'll discuss what this is about.  I've never heard of this, but it seems like an exciting way for kids to get into the shooting sports.

This is important as youth shooting sports is dropping off in Hawaii.  High schools have dropped smallbore, the Scouts don't shoot as much nowadays,  hunting is on the decline, and more laws and restrictions on under 21  using firearms.  It's important to support the youth who are the next general of 2A protectors.

Youtube livestream at 5pm Today (July 6)

Firearms and Accessories / LPVO's brightness and tradeoffs
« on: July 06, 2024, 08:18:43 AM »
This video covers the tradeoffs of different types of LPVOs.  Different dot brightness.  The tradeoffs between good reticles/bright dots/good battery life and why you can't have all 3.  And first or second focal plane use cases.

One point I disagree with is only needing to use max magnification on a LPVO.  The midranges are useful when you need some magnification, but still need field of view, but I suppose that would be a niche case in real life.

Legal and Activism / SCOTUS US v Rahimi, 2a and ROs, 8 to 1 against
« on: June 21, 2024, 10:01:08 AM »
SCOTUS released their opinion in Rahimi who violated a  domestic violence restraining order by possessing weapons, shooting them in the air, and other stupid stuff.

SCOTUS ruled 8 to 1 against Rahimi saying that peoples 2a rights can be restricted under a restraining order if they are a credible threat to society.  Thomas was the lone dissent with a lengthy opinion about the laws not following the history and tradition standard.  Roberts wrote the majority opinion which tried to narrowly define the ruling, but basically said although there is no historical laws specifically addressing this, there ware enough general analogues given that allowed the government to restrict a credible threat from possessing firearms.

Most of the other justices wrote their own concurring opinions based on their take on it.  Sotomeyer and Jackson wrote their concurring opinions blasting the Bruen decision while trying to widen the effects of this ruling so the lower courts can rule against the 2a.

Legal and Activism / SCOTUS Garland v Cargill, ATF rule on Bumpstocks
« on: June 14, 2024, 08:00:27 AM »
SCOTUS opinion, 6 to 3, that the ATF cannot ban bumpstocks.  The ATF did not have the power to change the definition of a machine gun, from the 1934 National Firearms Act, which was defined as fires more than one round per function of the trigger.  The rule change would have to go through Congress to be enacted.

This does not affect the Hawaii ban as it was not ruled on 2nd Amendment grounds.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/14/politics/supreme-court-bump-stocks/index.html

Interesting how CNN emphasizes it was a Trump era ban and was ruled constitutional by the conservative 5th circuit court.  Don't see them emphasizing Obama era ban upheld by liberal 9th circuit court.

I want to buy a Katana and do some training with it, at least to a novice level.  Need some recommendations on what to buy and where to train at.

On my research, I've seen that Katana's can be damaged very easily and it requires a good amount of skill to cut things properly.  So I'm considering starting with a cheap used monosteel Katana like a Dojo Pro for around $200.  Then later on look at a Motohara or similar that looks nice but can still be used.  Am I on the right track?

Sad to see people come into these situations and learning no one is coming to help you.  A bottle of OC could've prevented this.

My friend said he had a similar situation twice for non-emergencies.  He got the same message and had to keep calling back

Staff shortages plague Honolulu’s 911 system

When Kenneth Jacob, a 75-year-old Waikiki resident, was attacked by a man on the Ala Moana bridge over the Ala Wai Canal, he yelled, “Call 911."

Jacob’s automated phone assistant Siri called immediately...Instead, Jacob got an automated message indicating that no one was available to take his call.

He said that he also wanted first responders to come quickly to address the lump on his temple and three broken ribs.

A man broke a window during the Kalihi-Palama Neighborhood Board meeting.  Now the entire 400 member Neighborhood Board wants active shooter training because of it.  Training and preparedness is good.  But they're panicking.  Like they never encountered a crazy person before.  It feels like they have lived sheltered lives, even those representing high crime districts.

Perhaps it could be a good thing if they realize that people are responsible for their own safety.

General Discussion / Defensive Gun Use? Paradise Park shooting
« on: April 21, 2024, 10:04:36 PM »
This is a potential self-defense shooting on the Big Island where a person visited a residence and threatened and assaulted people with a knife and broken bottle.  The resident responded by shooting him and was arrested for attempted murder.

Light on the details but what seems like self-defense is the owner wasn't a prohibited person by court records, wasn't charged with the usual firearms offenses, it was his residence, and witnesses say the "victim" assaulted people.
