A friend is selling some reloading stuff including an RCBS RS5 press. It is smaller than a Rockchucker. Goes up to 223 size cartridges.
Anybody interested in a single stage kit? Send a pm.

Reloading / Anyone shoot 10mm Auto?
« on: October 08, 2013, 07:06:10 AM »
Anyone really shoot and reload 10mm auto?
I am looking to load some MGold165 gr. CMJ from the gun show.
I'd rather not reinvent the wheel if somebody has already done so.
All my previous loads were 180 gr.

I do have lots of data from books and the web, but I am curious about any local experiences.

Off Topic / [WTS] Need Plumbing Work Done?
« on: July 16, 2013, 04:37:55 AM »
This is a recommendation for plumbing work.
This fellow just moved from NY, but has deep family roots here. He is a master plumber with over 30 yrs experience.
Super nice guy and very akamai. The cool thing is that he has that Brooklyn accent but he is part Hawaiian and looks like an American Indian.
The reason why he moved is because he is getting older and the kids are all grown up. He brought all of his tools and parts from his business here so he is trying to re-establish a new life in "paradise". FYI he is first cousin to my work partner.
He did a minor faucet replacement job for me quickly and efficiently. It would have been horrible if I tried to do it myself as everything crumbled as soon as he touched it.
He is qualified to do construction and service plumbing.
Anyway, his name is Rick and I'll send his phone number if you contact me.

Events / July 4th is a full day at Koko Head
« on: July 03, 2013, 06:24:54 AM »
This is just a reminder that the KHSC will be open from 8am to 4pm on the 4th of July.
I suggest taking advantage of that to justify having the facility open on holidays.
On Memorial Day I was the only person at the pistol range at 2pm. (2 guys did show up later tho...)

General Discussion / How old were you when you started shooting?
« on: May 16, 2013, 08:09:15 AM »
That thread on preschools and KK's 3 yr. old got me to thinking about how old I was when I started shooting, and when I introduced my children to shooting.

When did you start?

When did you start your children? Or at what age WOULD you start them?

Personally, I think I was in second grade so I was about 7 yrs. old....a 22 cal. bolt action.
For my kids, I think between 5 and 10. They had to be strong enough to break the bbl on an air rifle or crank the lever on a Red Ryder.

Reloading / I feel the need...for speed
« on: April 18, 2013, 09:00:04 AM »
It is good to get away from the common 9, 40, and 45 once in a while.
Back in the day, this was common. Not so much any more.

So I loaded up some 44's and let my friends have a go at it.

Reloading / Class To Teach Reloading
« on: April 15, 2013, 11:33:25 AM »
Do you think there is genuine interest in having somebody actually teach a class on reloading?

Right off the bat, I can think of several; reasons why it would be a bad idea.

However, since there seems to be a lot of newcomers to the shooting community, I can see where it would be useful.
Especially with the cost of ammo today.

Pros, cons, suggestions anyone?

Reloading / The 9mm XTP Project

The 9mm XTP Project
Part 1- Defining the Goal

A friend requested that I reload some 9mm ammo for him.
It was supposed to SIMULATE his choice of home defense ammo. The logic being that one should practice defensive shooting skills with equipment equal to, or very similar to what is actually used. Ideally the ammo would have the same shape, size, recoil, and point of impact as the original factory ammo.
In this case it is the Hornady 124 grain XTP Hollow Point. (A truncated cone-shape.)

The factory spec for that ammo is 1110 fps from a 4" test barrel.
My sample measurements taken from supplied ammo was as follows:
LOA=1.060” with a standard deviation of 0.006”
Case mouth diameter= 0.374”
Bullet wt= 123.8 gr. not sealed with asphalt
Powder= 5.5 gr. of unknown flake-style propellant. (very uniform flakes)

Chronograph test from my SW compact 9mm-3.5 in stock bbl.
1065, 1046, 1046, 1037, 1032 fps
Av= 1045
Sd=12
It was expected that my local test speeds would be lower than factory spec because my gun has a shorter bbl and is a stock item. The longer 4” test bbl will shoot faster and since it is probably cut to tighter tolerance, it will shoot even faster than a typical 4’ gun bbl.
EG. A 5’ colt 45 acp bbl will shoot slower than a 5” match grade colt 45 acp bbl.

So now that I have defined the goal, let’s see if we can come up with something that approximates the original factory load. (124 gr JHP-TC at 1045fps from my pistol)

To be continued....

Reloading / Costco Headlamp Useful
« on: December 03, 2012, 02:54:18 AM »
I was in Costco and saw this item. It is a 3-pack of LED headlamps with Duracell batteries for about 10 bucks.
You just strap it on your head and push the button and it lights up whatever you are doing.
I have bought several different types in the past for night fishing and stuff but this is a pretty good deal.
The reason why I bring this up in this category is that I tried wearing this thing while reloading and found that it is
useful for easily seeing the powder charge in the case and just for seeing what is going on without having to run multiple
external lights to illuminate all the dark spots in a multistage reloading press. Previously, I had to run 2 little spotlights to catch
The left and right side of the Dillon press. They get hot after a while and positioning them "just right" can be a pain.
These units have 10 leds and can select fire either 4 or 10 leds. 4 leds is plenty for reloading unless your eyes are really bad.
Battery life should be very long as I have other low-power led flashlights that run forever on a few AAA batteries.
Obviously, these are also really helpful for the usual applications like camping and night fishing.

General Discussion / What is on your bookshelf?
« on: November 27, 2012, 09:40:59 AM »
I was trying to straighten up my house for the holidays and was tossing old software and stuff off my shelves.
You can learn a lot about a person by the books that he or she has collected.
Care to share a photo of your (firearms related) bookshelf?

Reloading / WARNING-Blazer 45 acp BRASS small primer
« on: November 02, 2012, 10:17:24 AM »
I was just loading a few rounds of 45acp to take to the range today and my press jammed.
I removed a BLAZER case from the machine and discovered that it had a small-size primer pocket which caused the jam.
It was a BRASS case, not aluminum. So it was difficult to spot.
A quick check with calipers confirmed that it was sized for small primers.
A quick search on the net revealed that people discovered this back in 2010, 2 years ago.
Now I have to check all my headstamps.  :wtf:

Firearms and Accessories / Electronic Ear Protection / Muffs
« on: November 01, 2012, 09:19:56 AM »
I could not find a thread on this fairly important topic so I thought I would start one.
Please relate your review on electronic ear protection that you personally own  or have used.
Please include specific brands and model number because there is pile of crap for sale on the net and they all claim to be wonderful.

I will start with this review:

I just picked up a set of "Howard Leight" electronic ear muffs model#  R-01902. ($63.00 on Amazon)
I have owned other electronic muffs before and the cheaper units kill all the sound when shot are fired so you cannot hear someone talking to you.
The electronics in these muffs supress the shots while allowing other sounds (like speech) to pass.
But the thing that really impressed me about these particular muffs was the engineering and thought that went into them.  They are well built, comfortable  and easy to use. They also have a very high natural NRR. So they really block out loud booms.
The only negative is that they are large (thus the high NRR) so I don;t think they are suitable for rifle shooting. I shoot mostly pistol so it was not my concern.

My next review  is forthcoming and not so happy
