Hi guys and gals was wondering if any of you have any firearms that are hydro dipped if so how does it hold up? heard the hydro film is pretty stout but have no first hand experience. Also does anyone know of a local place that does hydro dipping? was thinking about giving one of my rifles a face lift thanks..

thanks B looks good just gottah figure out if I wanna cerakote or dip my stuff, only thing im worried about with dipping is the clear coat that needs to be applied and the thickness that it adds and how well it will hold up against scratches and chips

Hydro-Dip allows for some killer patterns, but it doesn't seem to hold up as well as Cerakote when handled.  If you're going to use it on a safe queen or display gun, then Hydro-Dip should be fine, but if you're going to use the item in a class or training, then probably better to get it Cerakoted.  You might want to try and reach the Hydro guys through Facebook, they responded to me that way fastest vs. trying to reach them by phone.


P.S. The Cerakote offerings and effects some guys can get are pretty good.  I saw a bunch this past January that blew my mind.  Check out Blown Deadline for an idea of what I mean: http://blowndeadline.net/

thanks Bota I was thinking about dipping cus I wanted to do a kryptek pattern but also heard that the hydro graphic don't hold up well and its not going on a safe queen so im a little hesitant to dip it and wanted first hand knowledge from guys that have dipped firearms to see how well they are holding up

If done by a professional, it is very durable. Just be sure of the pattern you want because removing requires blasting and refinishing. Avoid the DIY kits.

If you're the type that might change his mind, consider Gunskins...1/2 the price and less permanent.

Hydro dipped graphics probably wouldn't bond to Cerakote very well.  Even Cerakote won't bond with Cerakote very well after it's fully cured.

A couple of years back, I was looking into buying a hydrodip tank to add to our Cerakote services.  All hydro dip graphics need a clear coat or the dried film will just scratch off.  The most durable is a polyurethane clear, but the base coat / poly clear coat finish will add thickness to your firearm.  For certain things like stocks, it might not matter as much, but for anything with a semi precision fit, like an action, may have problems.

Cerakote is now making a ceramic based clear in satin and high gloss.  It's made especially for clearing over hydro dip graphics.  I brought some in to try, but haven't really tested it too much.  It's thinner than polyurethane, so it might work decently.

Thanks for the reply.  That really clarifies things.  Please keep me updated on how the satin cerakote comes out.  I'm hoping that it will be a top coat over hydrodipping.

Lastly, do you know if cerakote has a more matte clear finish?
