Legal and Activism / New PTA requirements
« on: January 04, 2024, 08:42:23 AM »
On Maui, i went in to renew my Permit to Acquire (PTA) for long guns.

I was told I must have an updated Hunter Education course since my last one was filed more than 4 years ago.

Is the training requirement for a pistol PTA being conflated with the long gun requirement, or is this genuine?

Hunting / Maui to pay a bounty on deer, but only to big landowners
« on: December 31, 2023, 07:28:25 AM »
Now Maui is planning to pay a $50 bounty per deer tail, but only to large landowners. Must have 500 acres plus. Even on Lanai, where Ellison’s team have already reduced the population to very low levels. Apparently, Ellison needs more taxpayer funds. Nearly all of the meat will be left to rot. What a waste of taxpayers money and excellent meat!  Ughhh

Political Discussion / Corruption and apathy in the land of Aloha

A good article in Civil beat. Kind of long because of the extraordinary extent on this topic of systemic corruption in Hawaii .

Political Discussion / Re: you dont own your home in Hawaii...
« on: November 23, 2023, 11:27:56 PM »
Johnson and the fisherman protestors want the mayor to cancel the minatoya list, which was established over 20 years ago to allow certain areas to do nightly rentals to tourists.

To cancel this now would be a government taking, so it would require paying fair market value. On a long term rental, rentals are about $3000/ month. On a vacation short term rental, they can make about $10,000/ month. And it generates a lot of service jobs.

Displaced persons could rent these now, but they want it free. The mayor wants voluntary compliance ie for people to voluntarily give up $80,000/ year.  No thanks, not me. He can take away that property right and pay for it in perpetuity. But that would bankrupt the County.

I know of Kupuna that lost their home, could not pay the mortgage, When they had to stop short term rentals.  So we would trade one set of homeless for another set.

I dont have a magic solution, but this aint it.

Kanaio hunting area is open for public input.

Please provide comments on the proposed Kanaio hunting area on Maui. This is to open a new public hunting area on DLNR land. Land open to hunting is extremely limited on Maui, and this would be a positive step in helping meet the great demand of thousands of hunters on Maui and in Hawaii.  This is a definite win for hunters, and we need to support DLNR and help them help us. This public land should be open to Legal public hunters.

This will provide opportunity for new hunting grounds for upland game birds by shotgun;  and deer, pigs and goats by archery.

Please send in a comment in support of establishing this new public hunting  opportunity.  Deadline is December 8, but why wait?

It will take a just few minutes of your time. Send your comment to
Huntinghawaii@hawaii.gov

Here is the entire document.

You can use horn wax from a taxidermy supply to help them last.   Which is probably the same as a wood furniture wax, but they charge more for the taxidermy horn wax

Events / Gun buyback

I see there was a gun buyback on Oahu. When I was back mainland, these were great gun purchasing opportunities, just offer more to customers as they approached.

From Heavybarrel

“Glad you're okay, but the fact that you're calling dysfunctional government and/or industry a conspiracy theory is an even bigger dick move “

I appreciate the compliment. Seldom have I been accused of having a big dick before, but there is a first for everything!

There were many errors in this event, and many people paid with their lives. When fires are advancing a mile a minute, there is no room for any error.

I live very close to one of the fires in Kula. Many enormous trees, mostly Eucalyptus with shallow roots, toppled in the wind and dragged down the powerlines starting the fires. Some of these trees are 80 feet high and 5 foot dbh and weigh many thousands of pounds, blocking roads. The few firefighters that are here could not cover these blazes all over the place. I had to evacuate twice in the first big night, but we made it.

It might be nice to skip some of the conspiracies and political hate mongering on this issue.  A lot of people lost everything, and the community is doing the best we can to help each other out.

Who will cover the costs of the search?  Probably in the hundreds of millions of dollars, all told. Why do we taxpayers have to cover the costs of an accident caused by a reckless private operator, at an unpermitted thrill ride in International waters with a handful of Super wealthy clients.

With the eradication work done by Pulama Lanai, the last deer estimate for the public access land was roughly 650 deer. That is way way below target levels, and it will take years to recover to decent populations.

Hunting / Re: Pineapple Brothers Hunts

There are other options.  People rent out rooms in their homes for hunters. Others rent out old 4x4 trucks. Pineapple Bro’s know about them all, ask for other options.

Supporting visiting hunters is big business for the local community.
