General Discussion / Bear Spray
« on: December 30, 2023, 04:22:59 PM »
Is bear spray legal to own and use for self defense or for defense of others or for protection of property?  I do not see any restrictions in R.O.H Section 41-37.3.

Thoughts?

Of course I am not planning on buying any.

Reloading / Powder Valley (FYI)
« on: August 11, 2022, 08:04:15 AM »
It was worth a try - they have about 40 of 195 powders in stock.  The most that I have seen in two years.  But, powders are limited to one max for jugs and 2-5 for bottles.

Hi Wirecounter,

I am sorry but our system is unable to combine orders, each order would
would have to ship individually.

Thanks,

General Discussion / Ammo @ Young Guns
« on: February 28, 2022, 03:29:59 PM »
My friend went into Young Guns this Saturday and he said that they had choke 9mm & 22LR ammo.  Choke meaning over 100 cases.  Not sure of price or purchase limitations, but this is encouraging!

Reloading / Replacement for Plastic Reloading Hopper
« on: July 09, 2020, 10:46:49 AM »
I was tired of the plastic powder hopper getting more and more difficult to see through since I'm too lazy to empty it of powder after every reloading  session.  I found a great replacement made out of Pyrex, a bit pricey, but it will never get obscured since it is not plastic.  :geekdanc:

Check it out here . . .

General Discussion / Amazon & Hawaii Defense Foundation
« on: September 24, 2017, 10:08:00 PM »
So I logged into Amazon tonight and this message pops up:

We’re sorry. Hawaii Defense Foundation is not currently eligible to receive donations from AmazonSmile.

With a button below it to "Choose a new charity."  :wtf:

I am rethinking my purchases from this company . . .

General Discussion / Pistol Frame
« on: July 08, 2017, 08:47:07 PM »
Finally found the piece of paper that Slick wrote down the supplies needed to make a pistol frame with folding legs, see attached.

Just in case you cannot make it out:

2 each of 1" x 3" x 8' plank
2 pieces carriage bolt - 2" long
2 piece wing nuts - 1'4"
2 pieces fender washer - 1/4"
8 each 1-1/4" drywall screw

Assemble as shown.

One change that I made was to use longer carriage bolts (2-1/2" long), used an additional 2 fender washers, got rid of the drywall screws for the bottom cross member, and used the carriage bolt to keep it in place.

So, since I just bought a s***load of mixed once fired pistol brass (9mm & 38 spl), I was wondering how many of us sort pistol brass?

Checked out Oldfart's post from a couple of years ago regarding the difference POI of Fed & Win brass. https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=7656.msg78712#msg78712  Please post if you had/noticed any similar experiences.   :shaka:

Reloading / Thumler's Tumbler Model B
« on: June 21, 2015, 04:07:45 PM »
Well . . . it appears that my tumbler is giving up the ghost (motor is weak) & after only cleaning around 15k brass.  :(

So, I found a replacement motor that is "high speed" 3k rpm vs 1.55k rpm from http://www.stainlesstumblingmedia.com/reloading-products/tumblers.html
They also sell replacement parts & accessories.

They also sell their own souped up version of it called the Rebel 17, which already has the high speed motor along with shafts mounted with bearings instead of Thumler's plastic sleeves.  I'm almost tempted to buy it . . . almost.

Check it out!

Off Topic / Welder Recommendations?
« on: August 05, 2014, 07:41:23 AM »
I have some old (15 years old) awning windows (aluminum frame) that I need some welding work done.  All of my window hardware on the mauka side of the house has corroded to the point that the windows will not operate.

The work I need done:  The "arms" on both sides of each window have corroded off of the bar that connects the hardware on both sides of the window that open it.  I need to have the "arms"  welded back on to the bar.  I plan to clean off all of the corrosion build up down to bare metal so it can be welded and hold.

Please let me know if you know anyone who can perform this work.

On a side note, the manufacturer of the awning windows went out of business years ago as well as the window contractor that originally installed them = parts are obsolete.  BUT, I found a window hardware supplier on the internet, Blaine Window Hardware, Inc. - www.blainewindow.com that has awning window operators (part number 00095-L-037) that can replace my corroded operators, with some modifications.  I know that I am not the only one who has these windows (I went to a window contractor that smugly told me that hundreds of people in Hawaii have the same problem/window that I do so just spend the $$$ and buy the replacement from us.  Very helpful) so PM me for the details.  I refuse to spend upwards of 5k per window, especially when I have 8 windows that would need replacement, when some $25 part, some ingenuity, and professional welding (I gave up on alumaloy) can fix the problem.  These windows have been a thorn in my side for a few years and I am relieved to have a solution that will not cost me 40k!

Reloading / NFPA 495 Chapter 11 Section 5 - Small Arms Primers
« on: May 14, 2014, 10:09:16 PM »
This publication states that "No more than 10,000 small arms primers may be stored in residences."

This is part of the Fire Code which may or may not be part of the Fire Code for the state of Hawaii.  Does anyone know for sure?  I ask because it may be important in case of a fire in my house and if I am not in compliance with the Fire Code then I, most likely, will not be covered by my home owner's insurance.  I sure as heck do not plan on calling my agent and asking.

This publication also details how primers and powder shall be stored.

"What say you?"

Off Topic / Plumber Recommendation?
« on: August 04, 2013, 07:58:05 PM »
I have an issue with my solar water heater that I would like a plumber to repair.  The issue is that once the water temperature reaches around 120 degrees the pressure release valve opens and starts releasing water.  It never used to open at such a low temperature before, it would open when the temp was over 150 degrees.  I think at least a couple hundred gallons per day go down my driveway.

Anyone here know a good plumber they can recommend?  Please post or PM me.  Mahalo!   :shaka:

General Discussion / Are slingshots allowed at the (rifle) range?
« on: April 22, 2013, 01:35:18 PM »
I just purchased a Barnett Outdoors Cobra Slingshot with Stabilizer and Brace  from Amazon & want to test it out once the 38 caliber slingshot ammo gets in.  http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000HE8NL2/?tag=2ahawaii-20

I do not see it specifically prohibited and I was wondering if anyone knew if it was okay to bring a slingshot to test at the range.  I figured that the range would be much safer than testing it out in my back yard.

Almost half the benches were available by 2:30.

General Discussion / Denver Police Chief is a Fool
« on: April 03, 2013, 12:52:56 PM »
Obama continues his campain style rhetoric and speaks at the Denver Police Academy with Denver police officers in the background.  Police chief, Robert White, said that it was voluntary for the officers and not a requirement.  What message does this chief of police think that allowing this blatant manipulation of his officers portray to the rest of the nation?

Merriam-Webster: Fool - a person lacking in judgment or prudence.

Reloading / It finally happened - A stuck case in my die
« on: December 09, 2012, 02:05:06 PM »
Last night I was setting up my Dillon RT1200 to trim some 308 range brass I have (for my AR-10, not bolt rifle).  I almost had it set to the correct length (2.015") when a case got stuck in the trimming die.

I tried pulling it out with my side cutters - no deal.  I even got a punch to punch it out from the bottom which made matters much worse since now the neck was mushroomed around the die.  Maybe I shouldn't have had a few drinks while attempting removal of the case . . .

Anyway, I figured that I would buy another trim die since the case was stuck real good.  $50 plus shipping!  No way I was going to pay that - the case is coming out.

Surfed the internet (gotta LOVE it!) and found a solution.  Drill out the flash hole, tap out the hole with a 1/4-20 tap, then extract the case with a 1/4-20 bolt.  The bolt threads stripped on the first attempt so back to Ace to buy a SS 1/4-20 bolt.  Case came right out.  Total cost of tap and 2 bolts = $7.00, much cheaper than buying another die!  Used a couple of 3/8" drive sockets as spacers.
