EYEGLASSES PEOPLE - How/what you wear?
« on: August 24, 2013, 11:47:30 AM »
For those who wear glasses, for myopia or whatever (not just eye protection), what do you wear?

Do you change to special pair for shooting?

Wear the retainer strap?

Or you put on an extra eye protection OVER the glasses?

I am asking more on a tactical level.

Obviously if we lose the glasses, can't see sh*t.

I got a pair of polycarbonate frames with RX but that is not the everyday wear I have, and you know things and distances look weird when you change to a new pair. So, I don't really use them.

there was a thread a year or two about glasses and rx
with some discussion of bifocals and focusing on front sight vs target
i have an appointment with my good friend from high school who's an optometrist the tuesday after labor day and i'll ask him then

ok good call.

i don't wear contacts any more because my eyes are a bit dry now that I am older.

used to keep them on for days and days when I was a kid! crazy.

anyway related to this question also is in the middle of the night or whenever, you gotta get into action. Can't be wearing contacts at that time so most likely, grab the glasses from the bedstand.

I wear my prescription glasses with polycarbonite coating/protection.

I used to have those but in recent years I think I just got the "regular" plastic lens and no flare coating because it was getting pricey changing the RX every few years.

The polycarbonate lens ITSELF is a bit thick compared to the thin plastic lenses.

Used to wear quality glass lenses ages ago too, best clarity, but feel they are too risky now especially after picking up shooting.

I tried wearing my contacts, but they'd dry out and drive me nuts. I have some contemporary frames, so I can manage to fit these safety glasses over my glasses.  I really like them, but I don't think they'd fit over big frames.  Mine are 140's for reference.

My daughter wears these in the yellow for shooting.  Fits over her Rx frames fine, and doesn't look like she's going snow boarding!  For less than $10, what's not to like?

Although the range allows any glasses (Rx or non-Rx / Sunglasses / bifocals / etc.) as eye protection, I think you should be more cautious.  I've heard of too many guns and ammo causing shrapnel.

I have the same attitude about shooting safety as I do wearing a MC helmet.  Use your brain to make safety choices, not your ego.

Costco prescription glasses are way cheaper than at the Doctor's Office...it takes about a week.

Yeah, that is really all that I think we can do.  The prescription glasses act somewhat of an eye protection so there's nothing else needed.

By the bed... glasses, flashlight, ear muffs, phone and something nearby that goes bang if needed.  Am working on something else to hang on the bedroom door to add to all these.

For door security I add this kind of bar

I wear contacts and I go to Safety Systems and buy the Nemesis Safety Glasses which are polycarbonate and very cool looking. You can get them clear, smoked sunglasses and even a yellow shade. I think I paid about $5.00 for them a couple of years ago. They come with a neck cord as well. You can buy them online for less.

the newest versions of transitions have polarization now
i an probably gonna get those

Wiley X Blinks.

http://www.wileyx.com/EcommSuite/ProductDetail.aspx?ActivityCode=MOTORCYCLE&SeriesCode=CLIMATE_CONTROL&ProductLine=731,BLINK&ItemCode=556

Prescription w/ Transition lenses.

Kind of pricey, and I wish the tint got darker, but I like the fact that I can use the same glasses as a backup pair, and as eye protection for shooting in sunlight or low/no light situatuons, if needed.

I use either my Wiley X SG1's or Talons...

The SG1's are less comfortable for me so I only use them occasionally.  The Talons are pretty nice, I've used them for shooting and on a couple deployments... Still have the original lens, no bad scratches so far.   The rubber nose piece has started to degrade but both lens & nose piece are replaceable and readily available

I have been a professional firearms instructor for half of my life, having had many clients with similar concerns as yours and again talking to many professional competition shooters whom can actually shed a low cost to you simple explanation of what to do in your case.

Go to a shopping store in your area and look for their eyeglasses section, try on a few pairs with lower or higher prescription than yours; now hold out your hand making sure you can focus on your finger nails which will act as the sights to your firearm, the reason you do this is the front sight on a firearm is where your eye focus should be the target will be somewhat blurred, but you can still see both the target and your firearm's sights. These two aspects are the most important to any shooter whom is in your situation, also just wear your glasses, to over-do-it with multiple glasses it is not safer; it will cause you to focus elsewhere instead on your surroundings and your firearm.

Leave your old expensive glasses at home and use the ones you got at your local convenience store for the range.
