Hunting / Re: Wolf / Tula 5.56 or 223 soft point
« on: December 05, 2018, 06:41:01 PM »
I’m part Chinese? (Cheap aka frugal)

I’m thinking that for short ranges < 75yards, the cheap stuff will do for pigs

I could be wrong.  What 5.56/223 is favored for pig hunting and will it make much of a difference at < 75 yards?

I’m planning to use 7.62x39.  The 5.56 is for friends.
Within 75 yards & right conditions l’ll take a head shot.  But then that’s with my .308.   Within 75 yards a head shot with any bullet from 5.56/223 will drop them.

308gunner - 300 yards is a long shot.  Was it standing in the middle of a road?

Hi State - I still have to get dies, components and still work up a load.   Could you suggest a store that has 300 hunting ammo?  I’ll probably pick up a few boxes
Nope.  Walking across a pasture.  Two weeks before that I missed a huge boar at the same spot. Using a Nikon M-308 4-16 BDC Scope I used the hash mark for 300 yards and missed.  When I konked the boar at 300 I dialed up the scope 13 clicks as specified by the Nikon Spot on app.

Tim808... I too cannot keep up with dogs 🤣🤣🤣.  All my hogs shot within 70 yards. I did dropped one boar at 300 yards.  But then it was with my .308.  Good Luck!  Happy Hunting!

Thinking of getting a Grendel upper to possibly try hunting.

Is cheap wolf grendel available locally?

If not I may get an ak upper or more likely roll my own 300 BO since I already have a BO upper

It seems like 7.62x39 ARs arent uncommon for pig hunting.  I assume it is because meets the minimum energy levels required by DLNR for hunting, the ammo is cheap, easy to find ammo and the rifle is relatively light.

Tnx!
You hunting with dogs?  You’ll need to get close and personal.  Take your Game Ethically @ Humanely.  Use hunting bullets that will result in a quick kill and not let the animal suffer.

Made mine over 20 years ago when I was an electrician.  Used Sch. 80 PVC & Greenlee PVC Heater.  I gave up Ulua Fishing so my brother is still using it.

Hunting / Re: Are mongoose strictly active in the daytime?

No.  They are not nocturnal.  They always visit me at my hunting blind during the day.  As soon as the sun goes down they leave.

Hunting / Re: Field Dress Etiquette
« on: May 19, 2018, 01:18:31 PM »
After field dressing, what is the "proper" thing to do with the entrails?

My friends on the mainland always buried, but several "hunters" (more like poachers) ive spoken to recently say they just leave everything because "no maddah...da mongoose and pigs going eat em anyway". I personally don't think this is correct way to go about it, so advice from a more respectable crowd is appreciated.

Check out all my hunting posts on this forum. This a frequent area I go weekly.  All entrails left in a certain area in the grass no more than 20 yards from the blind.  No stink, nothing left when I come back one week later.  The pigs eat everything!

Next hunter education is feb 7, I might sign up for it. My buddy already did. Never hunted before, and I have a shotgun that's never shot anything but a clay. Any recommendations for spot and stalk?
I hope you’re going to slugs in your shotgun for a clean ethical kill.  I never did spot and stalk. Just remember hogs have excellent sense of smell and I don’t believe they have bad eye-sight. As soon as they catch movement they’re gone.  When they walk the trails they walk with their head slightly down using their sense of smell.  This just my observation... others may have difference in their opinions.  Good Luck!
