General Discussion / Re: Hawaii's Ministry of Truth
« on: Today at 06:06:02 PM »
With all the fake news we should have some 3rd party post disclaimers much like Twitter and their fact checker. Soon with AI advances telling fact from fiction will only get harder.

And who are these geniuses who are able to discern the truth from fiction in all countries, states, cities, towns, schools, businesses, government agencies, and so on?  Who is an expert in all facets of every possible category of information being posted online?

What's the consequence of getting it wrong?  Once the damage to the creator is done, do we now have to make it right with a giant check backed by more government debt?

That's why we have condoms and abortion.  Personally I still support the pill usage.  Works and it's safe for most.

Thanks, Dr. Jaco.

My younger daughter listened to her doctor and was prescribed the "safe and effective" pill around her senior year in HS.

After 3-4 years of suffering all kinds of anxiety and other similar issues, her doctor finally tried taking her off the pill.

Within 2 months, her mood was back to normal, and she was on a different form of BC.

BTW, we had condoms before the pill, so no, that's not why we have condoms.

And abortion is not in the same ballpark as all other forms of birth control.  Before RU-48, it was the only method of terminating a pregnancy, whereas all other forms prevented pregnancy.  Not that difficult to see the difference -- prevention vs. termination.

RFK stands no chance he is a horrible candidate.

I seem to remember another candidate being talked about the exact same way.

President Donald J. Trump.

This is rather cold hearted.
ALL kidnapped victims are presumed dead.
the people who kidnapped them should be obliterated.
No negotiations.
You kidnap , you will die.  Ever watch the movie "Ransom"?????
will really cut down on that crime.

Rather than using a work of fiction, all you need to reference is all the kidnapping going on in other countries.  It's such a lucrative racket, anyone who can afford a ransom pays premiums for 'kidnapping insurance'.  it's a process:  family member is kidnapped, insurance pays the ransom and family member is returned -- usually.

Talk about a financial incentive for breaking the law.  If you know what the insurance policy limits are, you can skip the negotiating and demand the max right off the bat.

I am talking about culture, not national identity.

Disagree with what?

I am uncertain what point you are trying to raise, as I was only talking about culture.

 :stopjack:

i'm not sure what your point was then.

There are 3 factors that define a nation:  language, border and culture.

People can learn science, math, politics, foreign affairs, national security, etc, etc.  There's no requirement that they be raised in an environment immersed in those disciplines.  Yet, those who are more knowledgable about those or other disciplines we call "experts.'

i disagree that one can't learn about Hawaiian culture to the degree needed to be an expert.  There's nothing about Hawaiian culture that's so unique from other cultures that it's beyond the comprehension of "outsiders."

Anything you can learn others can learn, too.

Good thing you weren't cutting a 4' x 8' piece !

The replacement blade arrived today.  Coincidentally, I also received an email from UPS my damaged blade was delivered to Diablo today, too.

All I lost was a 1" x 8" section that was my off-cut anyway.  The piece was damaged a little beyond where I planned the cut, so my intended 5-1/2" piece is only 4-3/4" wide now.

I can count my blessings, since I still have all my digits.  Not complaining!

So, what's your point other than looking for an excuse to argue with me?

I think it looks like you are arguing among yourself.

because we have dumb people writing sh1t
https://www.khon2.com/local-news/more-and-more-of-our-kupuna-are-becoming-homeless/

If we lower prices, then the wealthy don’t have as much surplus profits. If we eliminate houselessness, then non-profits and state/federal/city/county agencies would lose funding, which means people would lose their jobs.

In other words, suffering creates jobs.

We want more suffering so more people can have jobs which helps ease the suffering.

As the saying goes, "Talk is cheap."

George Clooney actually moved his family to Italy and then came back to the US saying he felt unsafe there.

But, this was not another "if Trump gets elected" thing.  They had actual reasons for moving other than virtue signaling.

Quote
That’s something Amal wanted. “She was quite adamant about the move and had been
suggesting it for years
,” says the source. “She felt their home on Lake Como [in Italy]
was too exposed, and she didn’t want the children going to school in L.A. or England.”
It helps that the kids were well prepared: In 2022, George proudly revealed that Alexander
and Ella are fluent in Italian and French! Amal also speaks French.
https://www.intouchweekly.com/posts/george-and-amal-clooney-move-to-france-inside-their-estate/

So, he's moved from the US to Italy and back again.  Now, he's moved to France.  I bet he'll be the "if Trump gets elected" poster boy for the Liberals anyway, lying that he moved away during Trump, came back for Biden, and is leaving again because of Trump.

Funny thing… one of the family vehicles were in for maintenance, asked the place to see if the bottle is in there… they say no, i post this, we pick up the vehicle… low and behold, i move my sunshade around. Its under there

Good guess, huh?

Glad it's home again.  It's hard enough to pony up the dough to buy those things initially.  Even harder to pay a second time for a replacement.

Control of news outlets?

Directly from Joseph Goebbels. . .

This is a direct violation of the 1st Amendment -- government censorship of individual speech.

That's the nature of freedom. People are at liberty to post lies (the government does it all the time), and everyone else is free to believe the lies or not.  Most of us ignore them.

I'd ask those in the legislature one question:  when the Democrat Party under the leadership of Hillary Clinton's campaign created the Russia Collusion hoax, and the FBI illegally obtained FISA warrants to spy on the Trump campaign, and when their lawyer lied about Carter Page being a CIA asset, and then continued their hoax for years to disrupt the Trump administration, is that the level of scrutiny we can expect from this Hawaii government based censorship board?

Has anyone bothered to apologize to the American people for silencing the people who refused to believe the lies and misinformation coming out of the White House and DOJ?

If government can't get the big things right, how can we trust them to get the little ones right?

Only aboriginal Hawaiians and those raised as Hawaiians can truly say that they are experts of Hawaiian culture by virtue of living that lifestyle on a daily basis.

Those who practice some elements of Hawaiian or any culture on a daily basis can realistically claim being familiar of the culture in-question to varying contextual degrees.

Those who do not practice on a daily basis any elements of Hawaiian or any culture for that matter are naturally outsiders whose personal views of that culture should generally be regarded as their own opinions.

So, you're saying anyone calling themselves Hawaiian, and who meet your standard of "living that lifestyle on a daily basis", are not Americans?

You can't have it both ways, if culture is your boundary for national identity.

I bet the people living in America in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, etc. communities living the lifestyle of their ancestors would disagree.

So, a Singapore Flagged cargo ship slams into a bridge on the mainland, and Biden promises federal aid to rebuild.

Meanwhile, where is Biden with aid for Maui fire victims?

i guess Hawaii doesn't matter, since the state is deep blue. No need to pander.

Legal and Activism / Re: Importing magazines into state w blocker
« on: March 27, 2024, 03:16:04 PM »
I've had mags blocked through LGS and variety of ways.  For polymer mags, a blocker in the follower, typically with epoxy.  That said, the epoxy has varying degress of "not readily restored".  Not sure if was the epoxy or the work to install, but some fell off before too long.  Of course, I made sure to make it "not readily restored" again. . .

For metal mags, they typically made a dimple that allowed only 10 rounds.

For competition, I have some mags with extended baseplates.  Yeah, better to have standard cap mags though. . . When traveling for competition or classes to free(er) states, standard cap mags are essential.  Otherwise you're jamming mags way to often.

I had to deal with that at Front Sight.  I was the odd man in my group without a shooting partner, so I got to shoot each exercise twice.

The problem was, having only 10 rds per mag, I was reloading like a Tasmanian Devil!  I had to sit out one or two volleys because I was still trying to reload.

Great practice -- at reloading magazines in record time!  My hands were sore, too, in spite of using a speed loader.

Like how some on this forum characterizes and often expresses dislike of what is Hawaiian culture as it has been generally portrayed?

I agree with your take, but it depends on cultural context.

Living in China, most people I dealt with don't care about the protection of personal liberties in the Western context.  However, perhaps the acquisition of wealth makes that issue a moot point as those with money are better able to enjoy life, which I suppose can be equated to personal liberty.

When you talk about culture, that's a mile away from talking about the people in general.

Not everyone espouses or adheres to a culture, but the culture exists.  Therefore, the culture is fair game for critique and criticism.  You're not lumping everyone in a demographic into that group -- just the ones who embrace that culture or some specific part of it.

There can be more than one culture within a race, population or other demographic.  Most people choose the cultures they embrace, such as guns and the Second Amendment, art, recreational drugs, religions, unlawful vices, etc.

You can be a practitioner of the Hawaiian culture and also be involved in the US gun culture.

I'm sure there are many of Hawaiian descent who don't embrace Hawaiian culture, especially if they moved away from the islands and like the culture where they are living.  Hard to maintain a culture when you and the people in your house are the only ones in 2,500 miles practicing it.

« on: March 27, 2024, 12:19:37 PM »
RFK probably lost a lot of independents with that VP pick. What a fool.

I've yet to see any voter stats on how many changed their mind based on the VP running mate.  You'd think that would make the news at some point.

Some believe voters only care about president, not vp.

Others believe while a VP running mate won't help the presidential candidate get votes, the wrong running mate can hurt them,  Again, no data to support that.

Unless there's a better than 50% chance the President won't survive his term, a VP pick is irrelevant -- unless you're looking down the road for when the VP runs for President.  But, that's a different election altogether.  it won't dissuade votes for the Presidential candidate now.

The running joke when a weak/poor VP candidate wins is that they were selected not as a good replacement if the president can't serve, but as an insurance policy against assassination of the president.

The content creator of this video is a foreigner and although living and marrying a Chinese woman, he is still definitely anti-China.  He judges China using his own Western values and ignores 5,000 years of Chinese history and culture.

Chinese people generally do not care about personal freedoms as does Western people.  The only personal freedom Chinese people universally cherish is wealth acquisition.  The Chinese economy is not doing as well as it has in its recent past due to US imperial sanctions to its own country and countries that it does business.  Naturally, domestic problems will arise in China which is exactly what the sanctions imposed by the US empire was meant to do.

One can express respect and acceptance of the Chinese people while simultaneously expressing a dislike for the Chinese government.

Anytime someone uses the word "generally" when describing a race or ethnicity, it flags that statement as a stereotype or oversimplification.

You say Chinese people "universally"  cherish wealth acquisition.  How does that exclude them from caring about personal freedoms?  In all cultures, money is power, and power is freedom.  Perhaps the acquisition of wealth is a means to an end:  Liberty.
