General Discussion / Re: Red Dot on Handgun - Sharing Experiences

There’s also quality in batteries. And prob how long said battery was on the shelf.

A buddy has their battery die when on the range recently. It was Holosun that he bought new recently. I would also expect the battery to be good, but no idea how long the battery was on the shelves at Holosun (or whichever company).

But yeah, best to change regularly. I have battery meters, but even those aren’t super reliable indicators.

But, if you’re like CMO, you’re proud when the optic fails and can experience it.  ;D

Another possibility is upside down battery.

Should have said I miss HIFICO range days

Not too much action on HIFICO range days

What’s the reason why SB1230 went through the JHA and FIN House committees last year versus SB3196 just being referred to only JHA this session?

SB1230 went to finance because money was involved.  The CCW fees.

I was thinking of doing something like this at khsc. But new rules shut the place down at 4pm.  >:(
We used to have such nice gatherings after 4pm.

Never met the range master, but maybe he could do something about that for an event.  Or a park permit.

Got my Narcan in the mail, 6 months later.  Better late than never, but I recommend getting it in person instead.  Amazon sells these for $45.

Hunting / Re: Can I use a bayonet while hunting?

Technically bayonets should fall under Deadly or Dangerous weapons and can't be transported...

"Other deadly or dangerous weapon" is limited to instruments whose sole design and purpose is to inflict bodily injury or death.  55 H. 531, 523 P.2d 299 (1974).

But I never heard of someone being arrested for it, and it's sold at the gun show.  Unless they consider it a firearm part.

One of the advancing bills this year would allow them to be carried openly if it passes.

It's a long running Democrat PAC using veterans to push progressive issues.   It may be connected to our favorite veteran's consulting group.

There's also the aspect of "embrace the wobble", where tendency is to want to have the dot "set" prior to "sending it".  I think that's where you may be sensing some relaxation on speed vs accuracy.

Just seems barbaric.

I've been using my Romeo 1 on a P320 and EPS Carry on a Glock 48.  It's like cheating when shooting long distance, tighter groups and simpler to shoot than with irons.  I'm still slow using it close up.  Its difficult to speed up and acquire the dot on a draw so I'm practicing reps.  And the other thing is I could trade some accuracy for speed, but unconsciously I just don't want to.

I found it is much easier to be accurate using it in rapid fire. You have an on obstructed view of the target, and it's much simpler to look at the dot than lining up sights in the miliseconds between shots.

I'm going to TACCON next week in Dallas and everyone will be using optics there.

This was my practice target yesterday with the red shots being a Glock 48 at 7 yards.  Half of them were one shot from step 3 of the draw, gun rotated forward.  My shot times were 1.1 seconds with .2 sec being reaction time. It should be .75 seconds.  Other half of the shots were shoot 1 reload shoot 6 rapid fire strings with .2 splits.  It was easy to keep the dot in the center of the target improving accuracy.
The green shots were a few 6 shot strings with 1s splits. Again easy to keep the dot on target.

For classes on the mainland, like the Rangemaster and ASP conference I went to, 80% of the shooters are shooting with pistol optics.

Good to see she's a support of the 2A now.  Took a bit longer than I expected.

There's currently no definition of a grenade launcher, but the closest thing would be a pistol or maybe canon or flare launcher.

Did you go to the old Hawaii Kai location?

Hard to say as each has its advantages.

The XDM is like shooting a Glock but with the nostalgia of shooting a 1911.

The Beretta is good for pistol whipping people.

Glocks can go through metal detectors.

The Sig 229/228  was my go to gun in counterstrike.

Legal and Activism / Re: FIRE MISSION HB 2342 BEFORE 3/14 3:05PM
« on: March 12, 2024, 05:08:17 PM »
Biggest problem is this bill is focused on CCW.  Anyone possessing a gun and committing a misdemeanor, even if unrelated, gets the charge upgraded to a felony.  For example, playing fireworks.  This is also considered a firearm offense and felony, so  you are now a prohibited person from firearms possession even though the original crime may be relatively minor.

This doesn't affect criminals because they'll be charged felonies for place to keep or prohibited persons, or whatever crime they're doing.

Reviews / Axil XCOR earplugs
« on: March 08, 2024, 01:14:51 PM »
I bought the Axil XCOR Bluetooth earplugs ($188 after disc, 21-23nrr) after seeing it advertised on Facebook a lot.  I prefer plugs over muffs for comfort, and have used the SportEars custom plugs ($1200, 29nrr) and 3M EEP100 w/skullscrews ($250, 23-30nrr) in the past.

The XCOR regular price is $199 and $299 with Bluetooth and there are regular discounts of 30 to 40% off.  It comes with a charging battery case, silicone tips 21nrr, foam tips 23nrr, and USB C charging cable.

The charging case is small and easily fits in a pocket.  The plugs are a bit in the larger side but fit comfortably and stay in well.  You could wear them all day with no problem.  These are rated for 12 hours of hearing control, 6 hours Bluetooth only, and 4 hours of hearing and Bluetooth. These ratings seem accurate with my use and 12 hours is more than enough to get through an extended range day.

These do an adequate job of blocking gunfire at the outdoor Koko Head bullseye pistol range.  I haven't tested the XCORs at an indoor range yet, but I'd expect the 23nrr is just enough for standard pistols, and anything more powerful would require doubling up.  My old 3Ms 30nrr was usable just by themselves at indoor ranges with the exception of muzzle brakes and the most powerful calibers.

The XCOR filters down loud noises which is better than cutting off all volume that cheaper stuff does, like the popular Howard Leight muffs.  However It does so noticably with a slight lag to return to normal volume.  Not bad, not great.  My SportEars did the same magically where you didn't notice it filtering.  The 3Ms cut off all sound for a split second which is a bit jarring.

The hearing enhancement is adequate.  There are 3 levels of enhancement from 1x, 2x, and 6x.  It performs as expected amplifying soft sounds and speech is clear.  However there is white noise from a soft hiss at 1x that you'll ignore after a short time but it gets louder at 6x where you probably won't use it.  I've found nothing that tops my old SportEars which were crystal clear and I could hear conversations at the other end of the firing line.  They were basically hearing aids that blocked sound. My 3Ms were poor in comparison with speech a bit muddied and the max amplification was about 1.5x..

I like having Bluetooth on my muffs/plugs as I use a shot timer app on the phone.   I don't bother other shooters next to me. The volume is loud.  Sometimes I'll listen to podcasts and the speech is clear.  The microphone for taking phone calls is just usable.  Music quality is just adequate with weak highs and lows.

Overall they're a good value for what they cost.  I just wish the NRR was higher.  It is a good improvement from my 5 year old 3Ms, but still nowhere near the performance of my 15 year old SportEars.

I see a purpose for it, but I'm hesitant due to property owner rights and a person doesn't have to be there.  Maybe in limited circumstances.

There's a better case when it comes to government properties as sometimes you have no choice and have to be there.
