Bow hunting for pigs
« on: December 08, 2017, 03:22:02 PM »
Hey guys I’ve been living on O‘ahu for over 3 years now but I’m just getting into trying to pig hunt over here. I’ve been to Lanai a few times Axis hunting and loved it. I also go back to the mainland every October/November to go whitetail hunting and had a really good year this year. I went out today for the first time just to check out the area over at Nu’uanu by the Pali Highway. I checked out the area behind the reservoir over there. I saw some tracks but that was it. It was extremely thick over there but I feel like it will be like that most places on the island. Does anyone have any advice on places to go or strategies on bow hunting for pigs?  Thanks for any info you can give. I recently retired from the Army after 21+ years so I have a little time on my hands right now if anyone would like to go out during the week. Thanks again.

I have the license. As a matter of fact I was at the Mililani Walmart last night getting it when the parking lot turned into a crime scene. I was just looking for some advice on locations and tactics. Thanks.

Walmart doesn't have hunting licenses , its provided by the DLNR.

Pigs are everywhere and is fair game. Most trails near the Pali are legal hunting zones. Some are zoned only for archery.

Sometimes you get lucky and walk up on them.
I'm sure you already know to play the wind while hunting.
They also move around a lot throughout the day,  unless it's really hot
If you can find where they bed down then perfect

Ummmmmm... you might want to call Walmart and tell them to stop selling hunting licenses.

Thanks for the info bass monkey. Do they mostly hang around in the bottom areas where is cooler and more water?  Are they like deer and move more in the early morning and late in the afternoon?  Thanks again.

Oh also always wear your blaze orange when in hunting zones
And if you harvest a pig,  make sure to wrap that in orange too.
I know a guy who packed out a pig and found an arrow in the pig when he got to his car

Sorry Suko but you are very wrong about Walmart and selling licenses.

Each area is different,  but pigs don't sweat,  so they roll in mud to keep cool.
And they are extremely nocturnal and move a lot at night.

Do you do more still hunting or stand hunting? The area I walked in today was very thick and I thought I was walking on human made trails but the farther in I went I think it was starting to turn into pig trails because they were cross-crossing in every direction.

It's a mix.  Sometimes we hunt with dogs or if not spot and stalk throughout the day,  its on private property though, so we're always checking it out.
I've never been in the nuuanu area,  but I know it's a high traffic area with hikers.
Look for rubs on tree's. It will tell you where they go and how big they are.
Look for tracks.  It will tell you gender and which way they are going and how long ago(broadly)
Look for trails.  It could be thick,  but pigs don't need as much space as we do.  Their trails will be around dog size tunnels through thick brush.

Sometimes they just wander into your backyard.

If you have property, get Nuisance Wildlife Control Permit from DLNR.
