Off Topic / Is your cat talking to you?
« on: January 14, 2026, 11:09:22 PM »
I stumbled across a video describing the evolution of "feline verbal language."  The theory is that cats only talk (meow) when they are communicating with humans.  It's a skill they've developed over centuries to actually manipulate humans.

Among cats, they rely on body language, growls, hisses, puffed-up fur, posing and purring to communicate.  They use the same when communicating with other animals.

However, when they want something from a human, they use the appropriate sound to get what they want or need.  They know one sound gets them food, another gets them affection/petting, and so on.  They even modify sounds when they discover which ones work best on "their" humans.

i have always been able to carry on conversations with my cats just as I've observed others doing.  Cats definitely learn certain English words like their names or "hungry?"  But that's just conditioned responses.  It's odd that i never really thought about how cats don't meow among themselves or to other species.

Treasury Department Announces
They Are No Longer Minting Pennies
After 232 Years

Quote
Back in February, President Donald Trump ordered Treasury Secretary
Scott Bessent to halt new production of the coin. The reason? It was too
expensive to produce a penny, and it was costing hardworking American
taxpayers millions.
https://tinyurl.com/mtxw7kv3

I'm looking forward to gas stations stopping that insane 9/10th of a cent added to the end of every gallon sold.
Quote
The practice of tacking 9/10 of a cent on the end of a gas price goes back
to when gas cost only pennies per gallon and was a tax imposed by state
and federal governments. Gas stations added the fraction of a cent on the
end of the price instead of rounding up the price. Back then, a full penny
would have been a budget-buster for customers. The federal tax was
implemented in 1932 as part of the Revenue Act of 1932 and was supposed
to expire in 1934 — except it never did.

Instead of ending the tax, Congress extended — and increased — it.
The 9/10 figure to account for a fractions of a cent tax is long outdated.

President Donald Trump called for the “immediate end” of temporary protected
status of Somali people in Minnesota on Friday, prompting questions about
whether he could take the step alone and what could happen to hundreds of
people in the United States under that designation.

Some Minnesota leaders celebrated the move, saying it could force accountability
after dozens of people were charged with defrauding state programs. Meanwhile,
Somali community leaders and DFL officials said the move cast an entire
community as bad actors and could endanger people’s lives.

Temporary protected status, often referred to as TPS, is a federal designation that
allows people from other countries to remain in the United States and pursue work
and travel authorization if they come from a place experiencing armed conflict,
environmental disasters or other extraordinary conditions.

The Department of Homeland Security decides which countries are designated as
TPS-eligble.

There is no path to citizenship from temporary protected status. It is a self-contained
status from which there is no other place to go unless there is a substantive change
in a person’s circumstances, such as marriage to a permanent resident or citizen, or
if someone is eligible for other immigration protection.

Across the country, there are 705 Somali migrants with temporary protected status,
per a congressional report issued earlier this year. Hundreds of those are in Minnesota.
But far more — tens of thousands of Somali Minnesotans — are legal residents.

On Friday, Trump deemed Minnesota a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity” in
a post on Truth Social. And he alleged without providing specifics that Somali gangs
were terrorizing Minnesota.

So far, dozens of people in Minnesota have been charged in connection with a scheme
to defraud a COVID-19 era child nutrition program. That was largely through the nonprofit
group Feeding Our Future. Federal officials have also charged others for alleged misuse
of state programs intended to provide autism treatment and housing stabilization services.

Some of the people charged and convicted in those cases came to Minnesota from
Somalia. Though it’s not clear that any of them are on temporary protected status.

CloudFlare saw a spike in unusual traffic just before their services went down.  They are still working to recover.

In case you're unaware, CloudFlare offers services that facilitate the routing of network traffic to customers' servers.  There are a variety of services they offer at costs that are from free to fractions of what other companies offer.  Therefore, they are the "hub" for a huge number of individuals and companies in need of such network services.

Quote
This failure triggered a cascade of connection issues that halted productivity
worldwide. Heavy hitters such as X, Spotify, and ChatGPT were among the
first casualties, leaving users unable to connect. The ripple effect was immediate
and severe, disrupting communication channels and entertainment platforms alike.
Quote
The outage is ongoing, and technical teams are working furiously to plug the
holes in the network. The company is prioritizing the restoration of service
stability above all else. 'We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is
served without errors,' the spokesperson said.

Only once stability is assured will the focus shift to a forensic analysis. 'After
that, we will turn our attention to investigating the cause of the unusual spike
in traffic,' they concluded.

As of 12:21 pm GMT, there was a glimmer of hope, though the fix was not
yet absolute. The company said: 'We are seeing services recover, but
customers may continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates as we
continue remediation efforts.'

A further message said: 'Update: we are continuing to investigate this issue.'
For now, the internet remains fragile, with users advised to expect lingering
instability as the situation evolves.

This is another reason to hate airlines and lawyers.

People are suing because they've PAID extra for a window seat on United Airlines flights, only to be seated next to the wall of the fuselage with no windows near them.

United's lawyers, in an attempt to have one lawsuit dismissed, argued that the term "Window Seat" describes the seat's location in the cabin, but not the existence of an actual window next to it.  So, when seats are sold and booked as aisle, center or window, passengers are choosing where it is located in relation to the other seats.

According to the airline, "the use of the word "window" in reference to a particular seat cannot reasonably be interpreted as a promise that the seat will have an exterior window view."

The lawyers have decided to change the meanings of 2 English words in common use:  Reasonably and window.

Anyway, the podcast host & lawyer in the video said he personally paid extra for an exit row seat to have more leg room, but the seat he was assigned wasn't in an exit row.  He wound up having to sit in a crowded cabin, then go through the trouble of contacting the airline for a refund of the amount he'd paid for an exit row seat.

Anyway, just because you think you know what you're buying doesn't mean you do.

Nancy FINALLY announcing her intention to not seek reelection.

This has to be one of the craziest things ever.

The 2025 Word of the Year is ............ a number ..... which is "67."

And what's worse, it has no meaning!

Quote
The Word of the Year for 2025 is "67," which is described as a nonsensical
and playful term that reflects social trends and has gained popularity among
younger generations. It is often used to convey a feeling or response
without a specific meaning, embodying the absurdity of modern slang.

I guess "67" is this era's "Wassuuuuuuuupp?!"   :shake:

Robert Englund, best known for Freddy Krueger role,
honored with Hollywood star

Quote
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" star, Robert Englund, was honored
with his Hollywood star, appropriately on this Halloween Friday.

The 78-year-old theatrically trained actor may be best known for
his menacing portrayal of Freddy Krueger, but he has also appeared
in over 80 films, multiple television series, and countless guest star
roles.

"I love the smell of peanut butter cups in the morning, Happy
Halloween," Englund said to the crowd gathered at the Hollywood
Walk of Fame ceremony.

There are approximately 42M people on SNAP EBT (Food Stamps).  Due to the government shutdown, the federal funding for the USDA program may not issue benefits beginning this Saturday, Nov 1.

Hawaii is putting out information that they may assist SNAP beneficiaries who support a minor child or children in the event of federal funding being suspended.

https://humanservices.hawaii.gov/hawai%CA%BBi-dhs-provides-guidance-and-support-for-households-affected-by-federal-shutdown-suspension-of-snap-benefits/

It's not that program beneficiaries can't use EBT after Nov 1.  If they still have benefits available on their EBT card before the cut-off, they can still use those funds.  So, the sudden impact of the cut-off might be less severe than all 42M recipients all at once.

Quote
FNS confirmed that households may continue redeeming
EBT benefits issued before Nov. 1 at any SNAP-authorized
retailer. The suspension affects November issuance only and
does not impact the ability to use previously loaded benefits.

Liberals claim Trump is trying to change the outcome of the midterm elections by sending DOJ observers to blue districts, in effect rigging the elections.

So, this man in Maine was the front-runner for the state's nominee for the upcoming US Senate race.  Photos of a Nazi tattoo on his chest are now going viral.

In this article, CBS said:
Quote
It happened during a night of drinking while he was on leave in Croatia,
he said, adding he was unaware until recently that the image has been
associated with Nazi police.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/graham-platner-nazi-symbol-tattoo-reddit-posts-maine/

They are gaslighting us by choosing one use of the emblem and ignoring its more significant meaning.  Liberals all over social media are defending him -- a man with a Nazi tattoo symbolizing the Holocaust who also admits to being a Communist.  More evidence they are insane.

The tattoo is the second version of the SS-Totenkopf:

SS-Totenkopfverbände ('Death's Head Units') was the Schutzstaffel (SS) organization
responsible for administering the Nazi concentration camps and extermination camps
for Nazi Germany, among similar duties.

The emblem was used in other SS and Panzer tank units, but it's most often associated with extermination camps.

The emblem is also used by today's neo-Nazis like the Skinheads:

At what point do we recognize that we need to limit these positions in government so (1) they aren't spending decades mostly campaigning for reelection, and (2) to prevent those with obvious mental and physical decline from remaining in office when younger, more capable reps and senators can replace them.

Only SCOTUS has lifetime appointments.  Congress, as with diapers, need changing frequently -- and for the same reason.

Dominion Voting Systems sold to company

The wife of the Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, uploaded a video complaining how truckers use the state's rest stops to get some rest.

Meanwhile, the homeless are not allowed to set up tents and live there.

Opinions?

If you've never lived on the mainland nor taken interstate highways on long trips, you might not have enough firsthand knowledge of rest stops.  Some states call them welcome centers at their borders or convenience centers.

In some areas, I felt apprehensive about going inside a rest stop when there were only one or two cars in the parking lot.  When I saw several big rigs, however, I felt safer.  Most of them are packing heat to protect themselves, and they have radios and work phones that can get through to help if needed.

Rest stops are usually busy during the daytime and some also at night.  A homeless camp would be problematic for the state.  Vehicle break-ins, drugs, panhandling and people living in restroom facilities would be a burden on travelers and the state.  Restrooms would be no different than the park restrooms here -- filthy, broken and always out of supplies.

Liberal have all the answers -- the WRONG answers!

Trump Supporters ARE TERRORISTS
Says Jimmy Kimmel,
DEFENDS Antifa And LIES

Quote
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has labelled MAGA supporters as
"domestic terrorists" while defending Antifa.

Kimmel's comments come after the Trump administration recently
signed Antifa as a terrorist organization.

The comedian goes on to say there is "no chaos" in cities like Portland,
Chicago and Los Angeles, where Trump wants to crack down on crime.

Kimmel then accuses the president of using fake chaos as a "pretence"
for a "military takeover".
........
Kimmel, while congratulating Trump for the historic peace deal and the
return of the remaining living Israeli hostages, couldn't help but insult the
president.

The SCOTUS is in the middle of a case that in all likelihood will reduce the number of democrat-controlled seats in the House by as many as 16 seats.

Quote
The U.S. Supreme Court, hearing arguments Wednesday over
a core provision of the Voting Rights Act, appeared inclined to
limit the use of the landmark law to force states to draw electoral
districts favorable to minority voters. The court is expected to rule
by June, though the justices can issue rulings whenever they’re
complete.

The court’s six conservative justices seemed like they would vote
to effectively strike down a Black majority House district in Louisiana
because it relied too heavily on race, as lawyers for Louisiana and
the Trump administration tried to persuade the court to wipe the
district away.

A ruling for Louisiana could open the door for legislatures to redraw
congressional maps across the South, potentially boosting
Republican electoral prospects by eliminating majority Black and
Latino districts that tend to favor Democrats.

It would also make it much harder, if not impossible, to take
account of race in redistricting.
