I haven't messed with Autodesks 123D, but I promise you I will be downloading it shortly and give it the once over. The problem you will have is you have to convert the CAD drawing to whatever language the CNC machine speaks or input everything by hand. Now that we are talking about just a cut out, even doing it by hand shouldn't pose a big issue. It is a simple drawing. I spent about 10 years or so working with Autodesks Inventor software and I can tell you that the software it easy to use (it was my companies first ever CAD software, also Autodesks first CAD software and Pro-E was just way to expensive). I will play with this 123D software and let you know what I think..

So, did you do it yet?  How'd it look if you did?

I want to cut the foam from my Pelican 1700 I just got (love Amazon).   :geekdanc:

It is pretty decent software...I am going to try to find some time to see if I can come up with a cut out. Give me a bit and hang in there I will get back with you!

How come he got those other magazines? They are not for the AR.

Or maybe this is double layer.

Hey guys, so without fancy CNC stuff, how can we do cutouts?

Anyone try rigging up a hot wire (literally) using batteries, and cutting it like a jig saw?

Of course, we need to make sure we don't have too much current on the batteries and overheat them.

You can do two layers of foam. One layer just plain.

Then the other layer on top, has the cutouts.

Not perfect but maybe can DIY at home?

Others throw the foam in the freezer for a few hours before cutting.

Just be careful when using a hotwire to cut foam... certain types of foam give of the same toxic gases found in gas chambers when heated beyond certain temperatures (supposedly).

Thanks. That be true!

I have a POSSIBLE alternative, but it might weigh significantly more than foam.

I was thinking maybe this could be used for grips as well.

Take a look.

Conceivably you can pour molds which fit your firearms. In which case, maybe we can cut rectangular cutouts from the foam (easier to get straight), and then fill in the gaps with this stuff (with the firearm mold in place, or maybe wrap the firearm in plastic wrap, etc.).

Hmm... I think I'll wait to see how your foam comes out.  ;D
