Political Discussion / Best Movie Music
« on: January 05, 2022, 01:52:36 PM »
Sometimes, the best soundtracks are in movies which are ABOUT the music:

La Bamba
The Buddy Holly Story
That Thing You Do
Bohemian Rhapsody
Walk the Line
The Blues Brothers

Other movies are just not the same without the music that drives it:

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Star Wars
The Godfather
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Back to the Future

Then there are the musicals, some with original songs, and others that incorporate already popular songs:

Moulin Rouge
The Wedding Singer
All That Jazz (Roy Scheider)
The Music Man
The Wizard of Oz
The Sound of Music
Singin' in the Rain
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

And, of course, there are the animated movies:

The Little Mermaid
The Lion King
The Nightmare Before Christmas

Any additions, subtractions, other categories?

Thoughts and opinions on what you think are best or worst in these lists?

Someone mentioned recently that music is not a big part of his life.  I think whether it's movies, TV, commercials, radio ads, or celebratory events, music is what makes it special, and what will bring back memories when a song we hear reminds us of them.

I think music is a big part of our lives whether or not we appreciate it.
Last night, about 1 AM Kentucky time, a single storm generated tornadoes that touched down and traveled some 210 miles across 5 states.  Many other storms that were part of the same storm system generated tornadoes and high wind, creating damage in many parts of those states.

Joe Biden gave remarks this morning on the devastation and took questions from the press.  They took this opportunity to ask him about Climate Change.  Of course -- they would, wouldn't they?

Rescue and Aid efforts are still underway, and these asshats need to push a political agenda.  Never let a good crisis go to waste.

Our media is broken.

Biden uses tornado tragedy to push
climate agenda, suggests storms
are ‘consequence of the warming’

President Biden on Saturday addressed the fatal weather that ravaged parts of the South
and Midwest and used the tragedy to further his own beliefs on climate change.

While speaking to reporters and virtually assessing the tornado damage from Wilmington,
Delaware, Biden was asked whether he "could conclude that these storms and the intensity
have to do with climate change."

"All I know is that the intensity of the weather across the board has some impacts as a
consequence of the warming of the planet and climate change," Biden said. "The specific
impact on these specific storms, I can't say at this point."

"I'm going to be asking the EPA and others to take a look at that," Biden added. "The fact is
that we all know everything is more intense when the climate is warming. Everything. And
obviously it has some impact here, but I can't give you a quantitative read on that."

What it might take to get the message through to a large portion of the country,

This case drives home the fact that there just aren't enough hate crimes being committed in the US to satisfy the Left.  They have to manufacture hate crimes in order to draw attention to the "problem" and themselves.  But, I digress...

Smollett was found guilty of the first 5 charges and not guilty of the sixth.
The 39-year-old "Empire" alum was charged with six counts of disorderly conduct related to
false statements to Chicago police officers in regard to a 2019 hate crime against himself. In
2019, he claimed that two men attacked him due to his skin color and sexual orientation.
Since being accused of staging the attack, Smollett has maintained his innocence and said
during his two-day testimony that "there was no hate crime hoax from my standpoint."

Prosecutors, however, argued that Smollett carried out a "dry run" of the attack the day before
it occurred in 2019.
The charge is a class 4 felony that carries a prison sentence of up to three years, but experts
have said if convicted, Smollett would likely be placed on probation and ordered to perform
community service.

We'll have to follow up with the sentencing after it's official.

White privilege?  More like "politically and celebrity connected" privilege.  Same thing that got the charges dropped and the records sealed the first time...

'The Five' react to the crime explosion in America

If you believe Jussie was not lying about being attacked by "MAGA Country Racists", then you must also believe White Nationalists are taking over the Republican party.

08/25/2020 -- Kyle Rittenhouse defends himself against Gaige Grosskreutz and shoots him in the bicep ("vaporized!")

10/06/2020 -- Gaige Grosskreutz arrested for DWI (bodycam footage)

Gaige Grosskreutz getting arrested for DWI last year. He was arrested for DUI on 10-6-2020. His BAC was .212 which is almost three times the legal limit.  The charges were eventually dropped. He has one prior DUI conviction.

Does anyone else believe the Prosecutor's office dropped the DWI charges for their "star witness" in an attempt to keep his record clean before he testified?

BAC of .212 is not a case of "I only had 2 beers."  .08 is the legal limit in most states.  His was almost THREE TIMES that.

Still waiting for charges of carrying an illegally concealed pistol, brandishing, assault, aggravated assault, attempted manslaughter and perjury.

Nothing to see here.   :wtf:

Off Topic / A Happy Story ... Getting My Driver's License Renewed
« on: November 26, 2021, 05:16:28 PM »
Well, it's been 8 years since my last renewal.  I've only had to do the eye exam, so the process is pretty minimal/

This year, I put it off due to the moving target of needing the Gold Star (Real-ID) symbol added for travel.  You're allowed to renew as early as 6 months prior to expiration and still have the next expiration date be your birthday in 8 years.  The Governor's current COVID Emergency Order extended driver's license expiration dates until Nov 30, 2021.  Mine expires on my birthday:  12/03/2021.  So, I figured I might as well stick to my normal renewal date.

Anyway, I went online to make an appointment.  They no longer allow walk-ins or stand-by customers -- appointment only.  When I went through the online forms, the earliest was Jan 3, 2022.  After browsing a little more, the site said they add the extended hour and cancelled appointments into the system between 3:30pm and 4:30pm the day prior.  That applies to three locations: Kapalama, Kapolei, Koolau driver licensing centers.  So, I waited to check after 3:30.  At 4:00, there were no new appointments.  I thought, maybe that's because it's Thanksgiving Day?  Then when I checked again about 4:30, there were a dozen or more slots available at Kapolei for the next day.  Woo hoo!     I picked the 3:45 slot.  7am just wasn't doing it for me!

Got there at 3:20 and checked in.  They ask that you check in 15 minutes prior to your appointment, so I was good.  At 3:30, they moved me from outside to inside the building.  There I waited until just before 3:45 to be called to a window.  They take you in order of your scheduled time, not according to when you check in.

I had all my papers:

- the license renewal application I filled out online and printed,
- my current license,
- my DD214 to have my license identify me as a Veteran, and
- my truck registration, for the Real-ID address verification

I didn't need my Social Security Card or Birth Certificate, since they had those already in their system.  If your current license doesn't have your current address (like an out of state license), you need a second document for the Real-ID verification.  The online app walks you through all the options for documents to bring.

I paid with a credit card.  They add 2.35% for credit card transactions, so the total was $40.95 ($40 for the renewed license that's good for another 8 years).

Got my photo taken at another window, received my temporary license, and was out the door at 4:00.

Be aware the temp license is not valid for flying, so plan accordingly.  Even if you aren't traveling, they recommend having a second form of ID on you just in case:  military ID, passport, etc.

It takes 6-8 weeks to receive your license in the mail.  If I recall, it was less than 2 weeks last time.  I'll update this when I get it.

Kapolei has about 12 windows to process license and ID customers, so the wait is minimal.  The appointment system is pretty easy to use and helps.

All in all, 30-40 minutes from arrival to departure was better than I normally expect to spend at the DMV or licensing offices.  The workers were also friendlier than many I've dealt with before.  Maybe they are still happy from their day off yesterday?   :geekdanc:

Hope this helps someone.  Or maybe it'll invite others to share their experiences, too.

THIS is why they protested to defund the police.  Fewer Cops = Safer Climate for Criminals.

Looks like the Rittenhouse Verdict protests didn't cause much rioting.  With Christmas so close, it's understandable that some segments of the population would have to go looting without a "protest" as cover.  Gotta get them high-end presents for their families.  Or as the Liberals say, "Necessities."

Off Topic / Which COVID-19 Vaccine Have You Had OR Are Thinking Of Getting?
« on: November 21, 2021, 06:21:49 PM »
Many who avoided the COVID-19 vaccine are now leaning toward getting it or are being forced to get it.  This poll will hopefully help us choose which vaccine we might consider to be better/safer than the others.

If you OR a family member have been vaccinated with any number of doses, you can respond for either person.  If you have not yet been vaccinated, but have decided on one brand when you eventually get it, you may also respond.  If you have a family member who was vaccinated, you can respond for them instead of yourself.

If there were any complications, that would be good info to put in your comments.

An important notice from Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente was recently notified by UNITE HERE! Local 5, which
represents some of the support staff at our Hawaii clinics and hospital, that
they intend to strike beginning at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, November 22.

We’re very disappointed in the union’s action. We’ve been bargaining in good
faith with Local 5 as a member of the Alliance of Health Care Unions since
April and sincerely believe that a strike is unwarranted, especially given the
strength of the current proposal and Kaiser Permanente’s already market-leading
wages and benefits. Our current offer includes pay increases and no benefit
reductions for all current Alliance employees.

To learn more about negotiations, visit

We want to assure you that in the event of a strike, our facilities will be staffed
by our trained and experienced managers and the contingency staff we are
bringing in as needed, and our physicians will continue to be here to care for
patients. We also have other contingency plans in place to continue to ensure
our members and patients continue to receive safe, high-quality care.

Patients with existing appointments should keep their appointments. There is
no need to call us or email your doctor. If there are changes in our services, you’ll
be contacted. We apologize for any inconvenience this work stoppage may cause.

We want to keep you informed as this situation evolves. You will find up-to-date

Facebook on Thursday announced that it has changed its company name to Meta.

The name change was announced at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual

social media. Facebook, now known as Meta, has adopted the new moniker, based
on the sci-fi term metaverse, to describe its vision for working and playing in a virtual

“Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that
builds technology to connect people, and the metaverse is the next frontier just like

The company also said in announcing the new name that it will change its stock ticker

Off Topic / unRAID Server Discussion
« on: October 24, 2021, 05:15:36 PM »
This is a follow-on topic for

How do you keep your digital music files?

I have 2 Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, each with 4 x 2TB drives in a RAID-5 configuration.  That's just under 6TB of usable storage each.

-- ReadyNAS NV+
-- ReadyNAS RN314

ReadyNAS is a Netgear product, originally produced and sold by Infrant Technologies.

As part of my previous "project" I installed the free-to-try O/S called "unRAID" on an INTEL PC.  I initially included 3 x SSD/NVME drives and 5 x mechanical drives 2TB each.  I used 2 drives for parity/redundancy, and 4 for data storage, giving me about 2TB x 4 drives = 8TB storage.  So far, I've used a little over 3TB.

What happened?
The reason for this new thread is I had a drive starting to fail on the RN314.  Nice thing about most RAID devices: they can alert you when there's a problem.

I finally had the time to delve into it, after deciding what I wanted to change.  I knew I was going to take my NV+ offline eventually, and this seems to be the right time.

My NV+ runs an older version of LINUX, is a bit slow transferring large data files, and is limited by the O/S to 2TB disks.   By comparison, the newer RN314 runs a much more current LINUX version, is super-fast transferring files by comparison, and so far appears to have no limitation on sizes of drives it can handle.

So, I replaced the failing drive in the RN314 with a drive from the NV+.  There's a safety feature that keeps you from formatting a drive from one ReadyNAS in another one, so I cloned the failing drive onto the replacement.  The RN314 picked it up and rebuilt if perfectly.

Since I had 2 vacant spots in the case and on the LSI disk controller in the unRAID server, I decided to move 2 of the 3 remaining disks from the NV+ to that box.

unRAID licensing is at 3 levels.  You can use it for free for 30 days, but after that, you need to pay for a license:

-- Basic $59 - 6 attached devices
-- Plus $89 - 12     "             "
-- Pro $129 - unlimited       "  (technically it's limited by the O/S at 28 data drives plus cache, 2 x parity disks and infinite unassigned disks that aren't part of the array)

The unRAID PC boots directly from a USB thumb drive, which isn't counted in the license.

So, I had the Plus license with 9 devices:  6 in the array counting 2 x parity drives, 2 x cache SSDs, and 1 unattached SSD for storing virtual machines, etc. That left 3 spots, and I only wanted 2.

Shutdown the PC, attached the 2 NV+ disks, and rebooted.  The drives showed up as "unassigned".

First step in using new drives is to clear them.  There's a utility called "Pre-Clear" that can be downloaded, but it's no longer needed.  Pre-clear's main use was to clear new disks while still having the RAID array running.  If you didn't pre-clear it, the unRAID O/S would stop the array, then clear the disk/s.  Depending on the drive size and how many passes you choose, it could take DAYS to complete.

Since my disks are not new, I was curious if the system would be able to clear, format and assign them.  So instead I used Pre-Clear.  This made sure the drives had no read or write errors, and it zeroed out all the data to make it quicker to add to the array (no parity needs to be rebuilt).

After many hours waiting on Pre-clear to finish, the older disk showed no formatted partition, but the newer one showed a journaled partition that didn't match to other unRAID disks.  So, I deleted both drive's partitions in the MAIN --> UNASSIGNED DEVICES tab, clicked on the FORMAT button for each, and watched as both were properly reformatted.

To assign them to the array, I first had to stop the array under MAIN --> ARRAY OPERATIONS, then go to the MAIN --> ARRAY DEVICES tab, and used the pulldown selector to add both drives.

Once I restarted the array in MAIN --> ARRAY OPERATIONS.  The system saw the formatted disks, and immediately added them.  Easy.

If you ever want to remove a disk from the array, it basically involves stopping the array, erasing the array device list, and reassigning the drives you want to keep.  Starting the array will remove the drive/s you didn't add back to to the array.

Anyway, I now have 11 devices and 12TB of storage (8TB before + 4TB added).

I also ran the Pre-Clear to test the bad drive from the RN314 and the 4th drive from the NV+.  The first showed increased SMART stats indicating it's probably failing, and the other finished without errors.  I'll keep the good drive as a spare for both the RN314 and the unRAID arrays.  At some point, I'll buy larger drives for the 4-bay RN314.  That'll give me more drives to use on the unRAID if I can find the physical space and maybe add another LSI controller.  It's a toss-up to keep adding disks and increasing the power demand, or spend money instead on larger drives and just chuck the 2TB disks.  Being an IT packrat is a bitch sometimes.

Now I need to rethink my backup strategies.  I also need to put my NV+ on Craig's List and eBay.  I'm sure someone needs a working one for parts or to replace one they've been using for years.

Note:  The latest Windows OS's created a problem with the NV+.  It can no longer be accessed via the Windows networking protocols.  I can use FTP/SFTP, SSH, and RSYNC to do backups and move files, but I can't easily browse the contents of the NAS from the Windows File Explorer.

Thanks, Bill!   :wtf:

He pressed the "View Source" feature on his browser, and noticed the actual social security numbers of all teachers in the state were embedded in the source.

He then notified the state's offices involved with the site as well as the governor's office.  He said the paper he worked for would delay publishing the story until the state has fixed the problem.

After the  site was fixed, and the story was published, the governor is now pushing to have the reporter charged for "hacking" the website!  The governor also says the "fix" CAUSED by the hacker will cost the state $50M.   :wtf:

Off Topic / Black Friday Deals 2021
« on: October 14, 2021, 11:57:37 PM »
As with last year, many retailers are starting their Black Friday sales a month in advance of the actual day after Thanksgiving.

Here's what Best Buy is planning:

Expect Best Buy's Black Friday sales to start early again this year.

The retailer will kick off the holiday season with a four-day sale starting Tuesday (Oct 19)
and then will start its Black Friday sale on Nov. 19 – a week earlier than Black Friday proper
(Nov 26).

The deals in the Oct. 19 sale will also be covered by a "Black Friday Price Guarantee" if
the prices go lower.

Best Buy said one of its “hottest deals” is a 70-inch Samsung 4K Smart TV for $599, a
savings of $150. Last year, the retailer sold a 70-inch Samsung TV for $529.99. There
also will be Chromebooks as low as $99.

William Shatner went into space for the first time in his life today (for real, that is), making him the oldest human being to do so.

His ticket price was $250,000.

William Shatner, the 90-year-old veteran of countless imaginary space voyages playing
Star Trek's Captain Kirk, blasted off for real Wednesday, becoming the oldest person to
reach the final frontier in a PR bonanza for Jeff Bezos and his rocket company Blue Origin.

Over the course of 10 minutes and 17 seconds, Shatner and three crewmates took off atop
a hydrogen-fueled rocket, climbed to edge of space 65.8 miles up and enjoyed three to four
minutes of weightlessness, along with spectacular views of Earth, before plunging back to
a gentle parachute-assisted touchdown.

Fun Halloween Fact:

The production budget for the original Halloween movie was only about $300K.  One cost-saving measure was to use an off-the-shelf mask for Michael Myers when he returned to Haddonfield after 15 years in the asylum.   Of the 3 candidate masks, they chose a William Shatner/Captain Kirk mask.  They removed the side burns, brushed back the hair, and made some changes to the eyes and skin color.
