A bit of a side track here, but what would one need in order to have their own private property range?
Ag land?
So many acres

I was looking into bulding ranges.  There are several factors to consider

1.  Prevent bullets from leaving the property -  If you have a big plot of land or up against a mountain, then it's easy.  A bullet can travel 1 to 2 miles or more depending on what you are shooting so you would need this much land downrange and enough on the sides to in the event of ND or ricochets.   Or you can build dirt berms or overhead cover able to stop rounds.

2.  Noise - Again large enough land area or berms/baffles to prevent noise from disrupting your neighbors.

3.  Environment - You need a environmental plan to prevent lead from leaving the range.  Such as rain runoff.  And you need to cleanup the range if you close it down and sell the property which is hazmat and absurdly expensive

4.  Then you need the legal stuff like zoning, permitting, community input, and other stuff depending where it's at.

As part of my work, a coworker and I were tasked to be small arms range specialists since we were the known "gun guys" in the office.  There have been numerous tests, studies, demonstrations of shock absorbing concrete for bullet trap technology.  Seemed pretty interesting.  While I design concrete structures for a living, I had never heard of this technology and apparently it's been around since the late 90s.

I have 50 yard handgun range in my backyard, and shoot quite often.  I live on the Big Island in a very gun friendly neighborhood.  My property is 3 acres, 266 ft on the road side and  goes back 490 ft on one side and 465 ft on the other. The state forest reserve is behind me.  My closest neighbor is at least 300 ft away on one side and about a 1/4 mile on the other.  I often hear gunshots coming from the neighboring properties and since I hear about 50 or more shots, I know they are not shooting wild pigs, so I would imagine they must have some kind of range set up too.  Living is a sparsely populated subdivision certainly does help. My subdivision is 12.5 sq miles with less than 600 people.  As a comparison, all of Kailua, including the marsh, is only 10.6 sq miles.  Even so, as a courtesy to neighbors I generally will shoot no more than 50 rounds and never on the weekends or holidays.

I've not seen this either and I'm in construction.  Couple of basic ways to catch bullets........traps from stell, recycled rubber or soil.

Mining to clear the bullets outdoor is relatively simple but you'd need some environmental consulting to stay on the right side of OSHA.

BTW a little bit of a sidetrack here, but how many of you guys would want to travel to the mainland to take classes?  Serious kine question here.

Like Rusty and zippz, I'm a Front Sight member too although haven't gone recently.  It was much easier planning trips when I was single.  When they complete the resort / condos it's going to be a whole 'nother story :)   I told my wife we're gonna' move there lol

Glad to see Butch is getting some recognition here.  I appreciate his instruction and take on things - which is centered on the "every day person" just trying to protect themselves vs. the soldier heading to the sand pit.  And as mentioned on the SSH video, safety is first and foremost.  Like others here I heard of him and the club and seen him at the shows but didn't sign up for classes until recently and can very highly recommend him.  NRA classes and materials - you can't go wrong.  Thanks 'hound also for posting that was a good reminder and a nudge to get off my okole!  Is your turn next lol   :shaka:

Finally, when the x-ring range opens it will be another game changer.  won't be cheap but where else you gonna' go.  aha.

I've kept in touch a little here and there with Jason.  I'll occasionally float something, but I try to get more realistic before I do because like you said, I'm sure he gets pinged with all sorts of "hey, how about a class in WayFarAway, US".  Haha.  The last I talked with him, we were trying to set something up for TCCC.  He does, or used to do it in combination with a shooting course, but was thinking if we could do it mostly class room that that would be more realistic.  I have a bunch of Army medic friends and more than a few EMS guys who were interested.

I've also gotten to know Jason's wife and business partner/manager through email and social media.  I know she wants to get something arranged out here for a family thing.  The classes I've taken with RB1 have all been in Alaska and I've been teasing those guys that they have to "endure" a class out here since they all had their chance to rib me about the "Hawaiian guy" freezing his ass off in their classes.   :shake:

Well, if I win millions and can buy a lot of land somewhere on Oahu, it will definitely include space for a shooting range.

I just took a class with some of the Alaska crew and Jason. I mentioned trying to get him to come out to Hawaii and they told me to look you up. They were all about making the trip to the islands haha.

Has anybody found any place that'll work for this? Jason is a fantastic instructor and I like him much better than some of the alias guys. I'd love to get him out here for even a one day pistol, one day rifle class.

I'm putting together a free classroom only 4 hour course on drawing from a holster, reloads, malfunctions, and other stuff if anyone is interested.  It's a good continuation from your Basic Pistol courses.  Tentatively set for July 17th.  It's a good prep if you want to do the HDF Pistol course or MPPL stuff later.  It'll be posted up on www.meetup.com/HawaiiGGG later.

Awesome experience, right?

I was chatting with Kyle, Nicole and Jezza (Jeremy) about that class.  It looked great!  They are still trying to convince me to go to the RB1 class in AK in September, but don't think I can make it.  They mentioned "another Hawaii guy".     Looks like the weather was MUCH warmer than I experienced in AK though.  Haha

Yeah, they mentioned that you'd likely be getting in touch.  Good to hear from you.  The main issue is available range facility that will be willing to host.  I had a couple of leads on ranges on the outer islands, but nothing firm and sort of haven't looked into it for a while.  There is potential for another range (well more like land that the owners is friendly to shooting) on the windward side, but I also shoot there with another instructor and don't want to step on toes.

It would be great to get him out here and I know he and his wife are all about setting up a work/vacation trip.  Might even get some of the AK folks to swing by.
