Reloading / Re: concentricity gauges
« on: September 01, 2021, 01:27:27 PM »
waste of money I.M.O.
Just roll the loaded round on a table and if it is a banana, you got problems.
Spend your money on better components and dies and concentricity will be good.

I used one on my benchrest loads. Used lapua brass and berger or sierra bullets sorted by weight and bearing surface. Some ammo was less than .001" runout some was closer to .005". I never saw a difference with accuracy between them. If you are like .020 or something like that, you don't need a dial indicator to see it.

Fire once and toss 'em. Not worth it. Loose primer pockets and cracked necks. Its a shame that even foreign brass such as Privi, Magtech and others are a lot better than Federal.

Yup

General Discussion / People selling loose ammo in the classifieds
« on: March 05, 2021, 07:13:53 PM »
I noticed that there has been a lot of ammo listed as "loose" "not in boxes". Is it normal to buy ammo and dump the boxes into ziplock bags?

I wonder how much of this stuff is reloads. Pretty risky buying loose ammo. I wonder how many exploding gun stories we're going to hear over the next year.

Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Short answer is: No ar/ak pistols. They are classified as assault pistols here and illegal to possess.
No pistol mags over 10 rounds.
No NFA items.
You will have to register all firearms with HPD, in person, downtown. They will take your fingerprints and add you to a FBI database (RAPBACK).
Storage and transport rules are strict.
Do yourself a favor and review the actual laws.  Most are clear. some are kinda grey.

Reloading / Re: can use magnum primers in non-magnum loads? (9mm)
« on: January 04, 2021, 05:39:14 PM »
I have used both magnum and non-magnum primers in 223 and 6br loads. the thicker cup in magnum primers can be helpful for certain loads.  Doesn't have much of an affect on velocity.
I don't have experience with pistol loads.
German Salazar did some research on the difference of primers. Pictures are linked here. https://www.6mmbr.com/primerpix.html
It seams like there is more variation between brands than magnum/non-magnum.

How do you measure where your barrel's lands are?  Any particular tool, or the method where you purposely seat a bullet a little long in an empty prepped case to find the jam point?

I have the Hornady COAL tool set as mentioned above, and a buddy loaned me his RCBS precision micrometer.  My buddy measured his barrel yesterday and the required length was more than he was comfortable with, even with the setback for the jump.  Apparently his factory action and barrel has a generous amount of space.

I have read and watched videos where some benchrest shooters purposely seat their bullets a touch long and that chambering the round does the "final seating".  Now realizing how fine those dimensions are, that seems pretty  :o to me.

I have used two methods. One is to use a fireformed and resized case (I like to use a larger bushing so as to lower the neck tension), seat a bullet long, chamber it and extract it, hoping the bullet is still in the casing and isn't stuck in the lands. The easier way is the hornady gauge with the threaded case.

I take all my measurements with calipers with the hornady or sinclair coal gauge. The kine that measures from the ogive.

The biggest problem with  seating long is, you better not change your mind, because once you chamber a round that bullet will likely need to be tapped out of the barrel with a cleaning rod if for some reason you don't shoot it.

I have had best results with a .010-.020" jump to the lands. I don't like jamming, it can cause issues and has not improved accuracy for me.

Consistency is most important.

Reloading / Re: Annealing Rifle Brass - Do you do it? Why?
« on: December 07, 2020, 03:32:24 PM »
Awesome!  Another perspective.  Thanks!  :shaka:

Why only Lapua brass for 6 mmbr?  Is that your precision rifle caliber of choice?

I'm just starting my reloading venture.  So I'm not too worried about the uber precision or neck splitting.  I mean I want to have better precision and want brass to last, but first steps first.

Yes, 6mm Benchrest is the cartridge for my benchrest rifle. I used Lapua brass because it's the best but also the most expensive. If you can make it last, it becomes some of the cheapest.
THe rifle is a savage 12 benchrest with a Shilen barrel bedded with devcon. 6mmbr is a great cartridge for absolute accuracy out to 600 yards and there was a website and forum dedicated to 6mmbr. They since changed to https://www.accurateshooter.com/ check it out. You can find the answers you are looking for there, but beware. Benchrest shooters will do things for the tiniest accuracy advantage (real or imagined)

I got a bench rest rifle to experiment with loading to see what i could accomplish, accuracy wise. It was a fun experience. I learned that you got to have a good platform to start with. I learned how to bed a action/barrel. I learned that you have to have a custom hand lapped barrel. The best production barrel can't come close. I learned that consistency is everything. EVERYTHING! I learned that match grade is a word that gets thrown around a lot but doesn't mean anything.

Do you anneal your rifle brass?  Why?
I did anneal my 6mmbr brass every 5 to 7 firings. Propane torch and pan of water method. My purpose was to extend the life of my Lapua brass. Annealing reduces the likely hood of split necks and other fatigue related failures. Loose primer pockets would signal end of life of my 6br brass. I always full length resize and when I am trying to produce accurate ammo, I use bushing dies with no expander.
I don't bother annealing 223, 300BLK, 308, 30 carbine or 30-06. Maybe if I was buying Lapua bra$$, I would, but not after every firing.

Do you do the annealing every reload?  Have you noticed a difference in performance?
No, you don't need to anneal after every firing. Annealing can improve your brass resizing consistency. In my case, I was using really good brass with tight chamber and minimum resizing, so I didn't see degradation in the first five firings.

Annealing is one of those things that if you have to do, do it. Otherwise it is either tedious and possibly painful (burnt fingers) or expensive and probably tedious to set up. If your not splitting necks or shooting benchrest, your time and money is better spent on something else. If you really want to see for yourself, get a torch and do it the cheap way.

All this talk has inspired me to load up some 30-06. Maybe I'll get out to the range this weekend and empty some clips. Ping!

I got a 1953 Garand a couple of years ago. I have been handloading all my ammo in mostly LC brass. I have had best accuracy from sierra 168 matchkings over IMR 4064. I think Varget develops higher pressure than 4895 and 4064, so be careful. FYI 4064 and 4895 are copies the powders used in 30 cal m1 ball ammo.
If you don't mind fiddling a little, you can buy an adjustable gas plug http://www.schustermfg.com/m1-garand-adjustable-gas-plug/ to tweak down the gas on modern 30-06 or hotter handloads.

The best part is that you are exempt from the 5 round rule at koko head.

I saw this awhile back. It kinda gets into the zone where it may not save you any money but if you can't get bullets, I guess it makes sense as a prepper thing.
I think it would be more interesting to buy j4 jackets or equivalent and swage precision bullets.
